CHAPTER 17

Emily stood in front of the mirror, adjusting the simple pearl pin that held her hair in a neat bun. Her palms were slightly damp, and her stomach churned with nerves. She took a shaky breath.

"This is just a job interview," she whispered to herself, trying to steady the pounding in her chest.

Just then, her phone buzzed on the small nightstand beside her. It was a call from Neno.

She picked it up quickly. "Good morning, dear."

"Emily!" Neno's cheerful voice sang through the line. "I just wanted to say good luck today. I'm praying for you."

Emily smiled softly, a gentle warmth blooming in her chest. "Thank you, Neno. I needed to hear that."

"Don't be nervous," Neno continued. "You're brilliant and kind. They'd be lucky to have you.""I'll do my best," Emily said. She didn't mention the flower shop incident from the day before. She didn't want Neno to worry over a man she might never see again. Some things were better left unsaid.

After ending the call, Emily headed to the kitchen where Lara had already prepared toast and eggs. The two sat together in comfortable silence.

"You ready?" Lara asked between bites.

"As ready as I'll ever be," Emily replied with a soft chuckle, though her eyes revealed the nervousness still simmering inside.

When breakfast was done, Lara handed her a neat file with Emily's resume and recommendation letters. "Let's go."

They hailed a cab and made their way to the towering company headquarters.
