Chapter 28: Memory Loopers

The forgotten carriage's window warped again, showing the same figure—bent, twitching, trapped in static. Liam could barely breathe as he watched it jerk and stutter, its face half-hidden in digital blur.

"That's you," Zero said softly, still sitting cross-legged on the scorched floor. "Or… the part of you that refused to forget. The train didn't delete him. It locked him here, looping the moment of collapse forever."

The figure raised its head.

Through the haze, Liam saw his own face—but older, harsher, marked by exhaustion and fury. The Looper Liam slammed against the glass, his mouth moving in silent rage.

The window shook.

"Can he see me?" Liam asked.

"Yes," Zero whispered. "And if he breaks through, he'll try to take your place."

Liam stepped closer. "Why?"

Zero lowered her head. "Because he believes you don't deserve it."

The Looper's hands pressed flat against the barrier now. Static flared along the edges as he threw himself forward again and again. The barrier cracked.

Elsewhere...

Neith reached the junction between cars just in time to hear it: a scream of code that rattled her wristboard. When she checked the feed, she saw the manifest glitching:

DREX / ACTIVE

DREX / CONTAINED

DREX / UNKNOWN

"Two Liams?" she muttered. "What the hell are we walking into?"
