Chapter 38: Memory Devourers

Above, chaos erupted.

The breach at Carriage 40 could no longer be contained. The passengers who had reawakened were screaming—not from fear, but because their memories were being ripped out of them.

Dark, swirling creatures had emerged—Memory Devourers, born from forgotten sins.

Damir fired his gauntlet repeatedly, plasma rounds phasing through them. "They're feeding on our regrets!"

Neith shouted, "Everyone fall back! We need an anchor point—anything that stabilizes identity!"

Zero, floating through the core interface, projected a memory burst to the entire carriage:

> A small boy in a junkyard, building his first train model. The scent of iron, oil, and burning dreams. His name: Liam Drex.

It echoed through everyone's mind like a bell—and the creatures screamed. Some imploded, unable to feast on coherent memory. Others, more ancient, dug deeper.

"They're evolving," Neith muttered. "We need Liam. Now."

In the Origin Carriage, Liam was still kneeling before the throne. The Echo's voice grew colder.

> "The train feeds on memory to keep the journey endless. To stop the cycle… you must take the burden."

"What burden?"

> "Become the Anchor. Carry all of it. The pain, the truths, the broken cycles."

Liam gritted his teeth. "And if I don't?"

> "The train loops again. Passengers forget. Your name vanishes. You become… another Looper."

He stood. "Then give it to me."

Suddenly, the throne unraveled. The room fractured into a stream of memories—millions—flowing into Liam's chest like burning stars. He screamed, eyes glowing, body writhing, as identities, lives, regrets, and unfinished dreams poured into him.

Above, Zero's screen flickered. "Neith… the core's stabilizing."

Neith exhaled. "He's doing it. He's anchoring the damn train."

But the Devourers had one last trick.

The largest of them, wreathed in silence and sorrow, tore through the floor and leapt into the railline.

Heading for the Origin Carriage.
