Chapter 26: Who Is Harrison Wells?
The air in S.T.A.R. Labs had been thick with suspicion for weeks, a suffocating blanket of dread. Joe and Cisco, with their relentless detective work, were closing in on Wells. And I, the walking, talking spoiler machine, was a bundle of nerves. Knowing the truth was one thing; watching it unravel, knowing the heartbreak it would cause, was another entirely.
"Okay, Adam. This is it. The big reveal. The moment everyone realizes their mentor is a murderous time-traveler. Just try not to look too smug. Or too terrified. Find that sweet spot between 'concerned friend' and 'guy who knew this all along and has been subtly trying to warn you for months.' Easy peasy." My internal monologue was a frantic attempt to maintain composure.
Cisco was practically vibrating with excitement and confusion as he showed Joe the hidden Time Vault and Gideon. "It's a secret room! And this AI… it knows everything! It even knows about… the future!"
I subtly nudged him. "You know, Cisco, sometimes the best way to hide something is in plain sight. Or, you know, in a secret room that's been there all along. And if you're looking for answers about the future, maybe you should ask Gideon about… the man in the yellow suit. Or, you know, the newspaper from the future."
Joe's eyes narrowed, his detective instincts fully engaged. "Newspaper from the future? What are you talking about, Adam?"
"Just a weird dream I had," I shrugged, feigning innocence. "Very vivid. Had a headline about The Flash and the Reverse-Flash. And… a byline from Iris West-Allen. Crazy, right?"
Joe stared at me, a thoughtful, almost disbelieving look on his face. He didn't say anything, but I knew the seed was planted.
Meanwhile, Caitlin was still in denial, clinging to the image of Wells as her kind, brilliant mentor. I tried to prepare her, gently.
"Caitlin," I said one evening, finding her alone in the lab, reviewing old research papers. "Can I ask you something?"
She looked up, a tired smile on her face. "Of course, Adam."
"What would you do," I began, choosing my words carefully, "if someone you trusted completely, someone you looked up to, someone you thought you knew… turned out to be someone else entirely? Someone… dangerous?"
Her smile faltered. "I… I don't know, Adam. I think I'd be devastated. Betrayed. It would shatter everything I thought I knew." Her gaze drifted to a photo of her and Wells. "Why? Is this about… Ronnie?"
"No," I said, taking her hand. "It's… it's about trust. And how fragile it can be. Sometimes, the people we think we know best… have the biggest secrets. And sometimes, those secrets can hurt us the most."
She looked at me, her eyes searching mine, a flicker of unease in their depths. She didn't understand, not fully, but the conversation clearly weighed on her.
The confrontation came swiftly. Joe, Barry, Cisco, and I gathered in the cortex, waiting for Wells. Caitlin stood beside me, her hand gripping mine, her knuckles white. Wells wheeled in, his usual calm demeanor intact.
"Harrison," Joe began, his voice grim. "We know."
Wells raised an eyebrow, feigning confusion. "Know what, Detective?"
Cisco, his voice trembling with a mixture of fear and righteous anger, stepped forward. "We know about the Time Vault. We know about Gideon. We know about the newspaper from the future. And we know… we know you're the Reverse-Flash."
Wells's facade finally cracked. A slow, chilling smile spread across his face, devoid of warmth, filled with menace. "Took you long enough." His voice, now deeper, more resonant, was pure evil.
Caitlin gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, tears instantly springing to her eyes. "No… no, it can't be."
My heart hammered against my ribs. Relief warred with dread. The truth was out. But now, the real danger began. I squeezed Caitlin's hand, trying to be a steady, comforting presence as her world shattered. She leaned into me, her body trembling, her sobs muffled against my shoulder.
Wells, now Eobard Thawne, looked at each of us, a triumphant glint in his eyes. His gaze lingered on me for a moment, a flicker of something unreadable – curiosity? Annoyance? – before moving on. He knew I was a variable. He just didn't know how much.
The team was shattered. Barry was furious, heartbroken. Cisco was devastated, betrayed. And Caitlin… Caitlin was utterly broken. Her mentor, the man she admired, the man who had helped her through her grief, was a monster.
I held her close, letting her cry, my own internal turmoil raging. The weight of my secret knowledge, of knowing all along, was a heavy burden. But for now, all I could do was be there for her. Be her rock. And prepare for the fight to come. Because Thawne wasn't just a villain; he was a force of nature. And we had just poked the bear.
