30Chapter 6
It is Friday and once again Benji to skip class, this time he just went for homeroom to say goodbye to Mrs. Knott, despite her present fear of him, she did try to help, but being stonewalled by the principal and threatened to be fired, she couldn't do much, he doesn't even blame her for not risking her job for him, at her age finding a new job is hard to impossible, add the state of Brockton Bay to make it worse, yeah, he doesn't fault the poor woman.
He secured his transfer papers and left the school, deciding to be more productive with his time than sitting and learning basic shit that he already knew far beyond the teachers could teach.
His basement base was getting crowded, between the seized gun and ammo crates, money trunks, boxed parts, miscellaneous supplies, storage for his costumes, computer desk, workbench and training equipment, the once spacious basement now has a little under half the open space that it had, and that was focused on his training space.
Benji had moved some supplies to the living room, mostly the food stock and soda machine, but he is reaching the end of what a regular basement can provide, with a frown he resumes working on the positronic computer, later in the day he will call that law office that work with capes, maybe he can find a way to get a base from them.
Scene break
Quinn Calle was having a slow day in the office, those weren't too common, and they usually preceded a memorable event, so when his secretary called in with a call from Brockton Bay's new cape he knew that the day would turn busy, he did schedule the new cape to meet at ten thirty in the morning.
On the dot his secretary announced that said cape arrived, Quinn raised an eyebrow at the way that he was dressed, 'I wonder where he got a camouflaged suit and tie.' He mused at the so called Captain Ninja's current attire, it was a decisively 'of the rack' suit, not one of the cheapest, but clearly not tailored, and it was in woodland camouflage colors. "I admit that I wasn't expecting this." He said cordially.
"You don't wear football armor for a ball." Benji replied mirthfully. "So I felt no need to wear my combat gear for meeting a lawyer, should I feel the need? I heard very gruesome tales about lawyers."
Quinn chuckled at that, the cape didn't sound unhinged or crazy, playful and likely playing the role of a fool to counter his vicious combat reputation, but not dangerous without a reason. "I admit that we don't have the nicest of reputations, same with tax collectors."
"Oh…the tales that I heard about those." Benji shivered exaggeratedly. "As you are aware I am Captain Ninja." He said offering his hand to shake, Quinn takes the hand and shakes it.
"Quinn Calle, I hope that we can do business." Quinn replied. "Please have a seat and tell me why you require my services."
Benji takes the offered seat. "While I am being unfairly prosecuted by the PRT, that isn't my main objective here." He explained. "I feel the need for property, discreet and secure property for myself, to use in my personal crusade against gangs and crime here, my current location is woefully inadequate."
"Purchasing property shouldn't be too hard." Quinn replied. "Setting proxy companies works the best for your type of situation, any preference of location and building?"
"A warehouse sized building or larger, preferable with a metal shop, fully equipped as well, I need a place to work metal from cutting it with mills to smelting it for alloys, as well being spacious enough for me to practice and train without risking damaging anything." Benji explained. "Storage space would also be appreciated, as for location, I would prefer on the higher part of town, on the outskirts going deeper into the country rather than by the bay, a place where sounds won't attract people."
Quinn wrote down Benji's requests. "Any of those that you are willing to compromise?" He asked levelly. "You can't get all your wishlist options in one place often."
Benji nodded understanding. "I am willing to compromise the metal shop, equipped or not." Tapping his chin he added. "I am not willing to compromise the general location on the outskirts far from the water, nor the sound issue, I want secrecy and privacy, it is a ninja thing."
Quinn nodded at that. "What about underground facilities?" He asked, some capes love those.
"If you can get it good, if not, well it isn't that big of a deal as long the building is secure." Benji responded. "As for the machines, I believe that I could use your services to purchase any that I would require."
"Of course." Quinn nodded. "Price?"
"Given the current situation, I am willing to dish out front half million, which given how Brockton Bay is a septic pool of crime is a lot." The ninja answered levelly. "My research shows that it is a lot of money for real state here, even on the prime areas."
"Indeed." Quinn confirmed. "Upper limit?"
"Three quarters of a million." Said the ninja. "For a place that checks all the boxes in my list."
Quinn nods at that. "Anything else?" the lawyer asked.
"A secondary location." Benji answered. "Close to Arcadia if possible, mostly as a bug out base if the primary gets damaged."
"That area is pricier and doesn't have warehouses or factories." Quinn responded levelly.
"It is fine, a three stories building, a house with basement, a building if possible, so I can secure it for my liking." The ninja clarified, "It isn't priority, focus on the primary, bring me the secondary options to check."
"More requests?" The older man asked wondering what else the cape would ask for.
"Any chance of you scoring me a list of suppliers for tech and parts?" Benji asked casually. "I am making do with stuff from radio shack, knowing whom to go to shop for parts, machines and other stuff like that would be nice."
"I do know a man that is a mover for capes, most independents get stuff from him." Quinn replied with a nod, writing down on a blank legal pad the contact of the mover. "Give him my name as indication to show that you aren't PRT or police, we have a working agreement, I send him clients and he send me clients, as well use my office's services when needing legal aid. He isn't a criminal, but he does take stolen goods."
Benji nodded at that, given the way that things work it was no surprise that middlemen like that did make a living like that, Quinn passes Benji the note, the ninja pockets it carefully.
"Can I get a bank account as well?" He asked curious. "I don't like leaving much money lying around gathering dust."
"I can set one for your proxy." Quinn answered, that was another common service of his office, capes need the unrelated accounts to keep their civilian identities secret. "My office can make deposits as well."
"Good to know." Benji replied, it would save him trouble and give him money.
"Now care to explain the PRT unfairly prosecuting you?" Quinn asked curious to know why the organization was persecuting the cape, it was the kind of case that would pay a lot of cash if done right.
"The Lung capture that Armsmaster claimed to have done was in reality done by me." The ninja explained in a strained voice. "He stole the credit and set me up as a villain, when I tried to expose him as the liar that he is, Dragon tried to kill me by turning my computer into a bomb while I tried to upload the evidence on the internet, and the PRT tried to capture me."
Quinn was very intrigued with what he just heard, that sounded like a major case, risky for sure, but it would pay off, especially with major names such as Dragon and Armsmaster involved in a conspiracy by the PRT to vilify a new cape. "Do you still have the evidence?" he queried.
Benji pulls a SD card on its protective case from his breast pocket. "I advise to watch it in a computer that isn't connected to the internet nor equipped with a WIFI internet board." He said seriously. "I have more copies of it, but Dragon did intercept it while I was uploading it and tried to kill me, there is also evidence of the attack as well."
Quinn nodded at the advice, he already did that, he kept a computer without internet capacity for viewing or working sensitive things. "Now let's talk about my honoraries." He said levelly. "I charge separately for non-legal work such as acquiring properties…"
Scene break
After another segment of 'Operation Mindfuck' Benji returned to his base after stopping for ordering a take out meal from Wendy's while wearing his camo suit, as in the night before donating to the charity boxes and being friendly.
"The effect of the suit was well worth the hassle of spray painting it." He muttered while hanging it on the wardrobe where he stored his costumes, Benji found the shocked expression of people seeing him wearing a business suit -complete with a camo tie, and his usual mask, glasses and hat- hilarious as he acted as if he wasn't wearing a ninja mask or being a reputed villainous cape with a death toll on the three digits.
The PHO was a mess of activity on the threads dedicated to him, it was pure chaos, screams of him being a villain, of being mad, of being deranged, of being a nice but misunderstood guy and more were being tossed around. Checking his ninja phone he found a message from Lisa wondering what the hell he was up to with the food stunts, he just smiled and replied with nonsense to drive the girl up the walls.
Scene break
Amy was a bit surprised when her new phone chimes its new text alarm when she stepped out of the room of her latest patient, the little screen on the top of the upper half of the device shows the sender, which made her smile wryly when reading CN. Shaking her head in mock annoyance she opens the phone and reads the message.
"So I am not the only one cutting classes again, it is almost lunch hour, you either join me for a meal and take a break or will exfiltrate you from there. Your annoyingly sneaky friend." Amy read unable to keep a smile, part of her dearly wanted to smack the boy upside his head, but she couldn't really remember the last time that she had a friend –or something close of- worried about her well being, and after the past weeks her relationship with her family wasn't going well, even Vicky wasn't the light in the darkness as she used to be.
Amy closes the message and fiddles around until getting the non emergency number that Benji gave her. "I take that you are nearby." She said once the line connected.
"As close or as far as needed." Benji replied enigmatically. "Just a jump away."
"And you will harass me until I go with you?" She asked levelly.
"Not really." He answered. "As long you take a break and go eat something, I don't mind if you eat in the hospital, as long you eat and take a total of sixty minutes of a break barring some really critical patient arriving that is on a do or die state. I am stalking you over your health, but I am not stalking you for stalking you," He then adds a playful tone on his voice, "Consider this as part of my costumer service, the client must be alive and healthy to complete the mission."
"And I have to suffer through it." Amy said in mock annoyance. "I feel like having Italian, if I remember right there should be a Italian place near here."
"I think that I can find it." Benji replied. "Meet you there?"
"Yes, you are paying though." Amy responded teasingly. "Since I am suffering through not working."
"Yes, yes." Benji teased back. "See you in twenty?"
"Give or take a few." Amy answered. "No hat."
"That much is obvious." He shot back. "No need for panic, my food stunts are short enough for me to leave before the police or PRT show up."
Scene break*
The meal was enjoyable and Amy enjoyed the fact that Benji kept the conversation light without dwelling on cape life, while she wasn't much of a video game player, he was able to spin the plots of a few games in a engaging story that made her consider playing, if she had the time for it.
After the meal they walk towards the hospital in a slow pace. "Any progress with my request?" Amy asked seriously, curious over his efficiency in finding information.
"Some." He responded evasively. "No evidence, just what I heard, and so far nothing really nice."
"Anything that you can give me?" she asked eagerly, she wasn't expecting results this soon.
"Carol is fucked up beyond belief." The ninja replied seriously. "Your father needs help badly, the guy needs a supporting wife that would positively take the reins of his treatment, not Carol who is content in letting him forget his medicine or not even buy the refills for it when they run out, if she took over his medicine routine, making him take them before she leaves for the day, he would be more active, not that much, but he wouldn't be the doormat that he is."
Amy frowned at that, she had suspected that Carol was less than attentive with Mark's issues, and she did notice that Benji called Mark her father and Carol wasn't called her mother, showing that the ninja didn't consider Carol to be her adoptive mother while Mark is an adoptive parent.
"Your sister, well she is also messed up." Benji continued. "Mentally she didn't mature much, oh she is interested on boys and sex, but overall, she is just a ten years old with a sixteen years old body, her emotion aura also contributed to it, she knows that she can get her way if she uses it and isn't shy in using it to get what she wants, toys, fancy things, boys, attention, her choice of name is telling Glory Girl, she wants attention, she wants the spotlight to be on her all the time, and…"
"And?" Amy prodded, she didn't like what she heard but matched Vicky's actions a lot.
"She resents you." He resumed his thought. "Your power while weaker in combat than hers, is more PR exploitable, it makes you more important and valuable than she is, she is just an 'Alexandria package', you are one of the very small handful of healers available worldwide, most of the current positive PR of New Wave is thanks to your actions as a healer."
Amy was stunned with that, she didn't know or think that she was all that, finding that Vicky resented her also hurt.
"While there is a part of her that does care for you, she has a desire to dominate and keep you underfoot that overshadows everything else." Benji continued. "You are there to support her, to clean up after her and be there to make her look better by comparison."
Amy chuckled bitterly. "Vicky is quite pretty." She admitted. "I am not."
"You are careless." Benji countered. "Sure she is pretty in a cheerleading bimbo kind of way, she is the kind of girl that does porn or is the eye candy for a TV show, you in the other hand doesn't take the care to improve your looks."
"What there is to improve?" Amy asked wryly. "I am not pretty."
"Yes you are." He riposted, stunning the girl. "The problem is that you don't take the steps to improve or enhance what is there, take your hair for example, you don't brush it well or use the right shampoo for it, it is what makes your hair frizzy and unattractive, your haircut isn't that good either, when was the last time that you got a trim?"
Amy didn't know what to say, though part of her did try to remember her last appointment at a salon and she couldn't really remember it, the last times that she got any work done on her hair was done by her aunt Sarah. "So what?"
"Take the time to go to a salon or a spa or something like that." Benji responded. "Your skin doesn't look good, you might need to exfoliate or hydrate, some time in the sun wouldn't hurt either, have a professional tell you what you need to do and take the time to do it, I am sure that you can take an hour or so before bed to care for yourself, that alone will do wonders."
"I am not sure of that." Amy replied weakly. "Sure I might be able to get the time at night to do those things, but would it work?"
"Would certainly help." He explained. "It is a multi purpose thing, while it works because you are using the right products, it also makes you relax or feel good, some people kind of use 'rituals' like that to relax and meditate, using the act of doing stuff like that to slow down and decompress, and from what I know about stuff like that, even if each act is small in its rewards, they stack, so exfoliating, hydrating, using proper haircare, a nice haircut by a pro, some manicuring and pedicure, all would help improve your beauty but let you feel more confident and nice as you see the results."
"Beauty?" Amy asked stunned, Benji palms his face at the slip, then again the girl needs it, since the wave of disbelief that he felt from her was massive.
"Yes Amy, you are an attractive girl." He answered seriously. "You just don't seem to care about yourself and let yourself go, do you have plans for the afternoon?"
"More healing and meeting with my cousin Crystal around threeish." Amy replied still dazed with his words.
"Borrow me your phone." He told her, Amy nodded and handed him her phone, he checks her personal SIM and find the number that he wants, then he hands back to the girl.
"Wait!" Amy exclaimed regaining her wits as she pocked the phone, Benji is busy texting something. "What are you doing?!"
"Texting your cousin as your tentative boyfriend and telling her to drag you to a spa." Benji answered sending the message away. "I will go buy you two passes for that fancy one in the mall, and sneak them to you later, you will enjoy yourself even if kicking and screaming all the way," he steals a peck from her cheek and bolts "bye for now."
"Dammit it Benji!" Amy cried when he runs away from her laughing, leaving her stunned at the hospital's reception. "You will pay for this!" At that moment her phone rings with Crystal's ringtone. "Dearly…" Amy doesn't notice the nurse chuckling at the scene, she did catch the tail end of the conversation and was happy that Amy found a nice boy, as she sees it the girl deserves it.
Scene break
Crystal Pelham was startled with the sudden message of a boy claiming to her youngest cousin's boyfriend, fact confirmed by said cousin, she did like that the boy was willing to force Amy to relax, it was the only way to do it since she triggered, of course the paid afternoon in a spa did go a long way to make her more agreeable, though Amy was pouting the entire way to the spa, muttering untold amounts of payment on her boyfriend who set her up like that, it was odd for Crystal seeing that, most girls would be gushing at an afternoon at a spa, specially a surprise one.
Curious Crystal began the long process of dragging information out of Amy, she had heard Vicky complaining about Amy's lack of interest on boys and Vicky could be oblivious when she wanted to, she knew that Amy's tastes weren't the same as Vicky's and Vicky picked boys for Amy that the timid girl wouldn't pick for herself.
