Chapter 4 No More Mrs. Nice Wife

Laurel leaned back against the door, and slowly slid down to the floor. She had never thought she would see his face again, especially not after he had betrayed her.

Tears poured down her cheeks like a broken dam. She knew he had never loved her. She was the person he hated the most… because of the one-night stand.

He believed she was the one who had set him up and drugged him so she could sleep her way up to status. And that was the reason why Alexander hated her.

In her past life, she had always thought he would change once he got to know her but she was wrong… she was wrong all along.

But this time she was not going to blindly trust him anymore. She wiped her tears with the back of her hand. What she should focus on now was how to plan for the approaching apocalypse, she was not going to foolishly fall in love anymore.

"Still crying… I can see why your life is a mess and why you died." Ling Xuan said casually.

"And if you were so perfect, why did you die?" Laurel snapped back at her. Then rose from the floor to go get dressed.

"I died an honourable death, I died for my people… I died protecting my home. But you?" She scoffed. "Too weak. So sad I was paired with someone like you."

"You shouldn't have died if you were so great! And you shouldn't have been paired with me if you were so perfect."

"Watch. Your. Tone."

"Angry? Too bad you can't harm now." Laurel angrily changed her clothes.

"That doesn't mean I won't get my chance."

They both groaned in exasperation.

Another knock came again. Laurel bit her lower lip, She did not want to go outside her room, she did not want to see the faces of the people who had caused her death.

"Coming." She quickly brushed her hair before walking to the door again.

Today was the 21st day after their marriage, and they had just returned from their honeymoon. It was more of a bittermoon.

She smooths out the crease in her dress, then she opens the door. "Mrs. Wayne, the rest of the family members are waiting for you to have dinner."

Her eyes hardened the moment they fell on the servant. He was one of the two men who had dragged her to the railings. Seeing the respect in his eyes now, felt more like a joke to her.

"Lead the way." Her voice was devoid of emotion.

Even the servant was surprised at the tone, but he quickly masked his surprised look with a respectful one.

They walked down the hallway of the mansion. Everywhere was clean without a speck of dust. The interior designs, from the curtains to the chandeliers were all screaming luxury. That was how rich the Waynes were.

Now that she had remarried into the same family again, she couldn't help but wonder why her situation was different. In the books she had read, the husband always changed. Why was she still married to the same fool who couldn't differentiate between a pretentious vixen and a good wife?

"Like you weren't also fooled by the same pretentious vixen. I guess birds of the same feather flock together… a fool married to a fool." Ling Xuan stressed the syllables.

Laurel clenched her fist in anger. "And how do you know about my past? I don't think we have been that close to the extent of me telling you how I died."

"Well. I am taking my time to browse through your memories."

'That is also possible?'

Laurel's eyes widened as her words sank into her brain. "STOP RIGHT NOW!" Her voice reverberated through the walls.

The servant immediately dropped to his knees. "Forgive me Mrs. Wayne if I wronged you." His shoulders trembled.

Laurel clamped her hand over her chest, her eyes widening in shock. "Hmmhmmm. You may rise… I wasn't referring to you."

The servant rose to his feet. "Thank you, Mrs. Wayne." The servant rose and continued leading the way.

"You see what you have caused? Are you trying to expose us?... And stop going through my memories. They are supposed to remain a secret except I DECIDE to share them." Laurel seethed with anger.

"Oh… you have some juicy stuff down here. So you really loved that idiot who had you thrown to the monsters? Interesting…"

"I SAID STOPPED." This time her voice sounded furious.

The servant dropped to his knees again. "Mrs. Wayne, forgive me if I am taking the long way. It is because Mr. Wayne ordered me to."

"Okay, now that's new."

Laurel already knew about all of this, but she was just playing along to avoid suspicion.

"It is okay, Celdric. I wasn't referring to that." Laurel inhaled sharply.

Suddenly, Laurel's body twitched. Then her head fell low, as if she were sleeping, and then she slowly raised her head.

This time her gaze was cold and a small smirk formed on her lips. She cracked her neck to the left before cracking it to the right. She flexed her arms as if she were just waking up.

Celdric stood dazed, his legs slightly wobbly. He had never felt such a murderous aura in his entire life. How could someone's aura change so fast? Mrs. Wayne was known to be kind and soft.

But the person right in front of him was so different, shivers ran down his spine. He unconsciously straightened his back.

"Celdric, you are dismissed. I'll find my way to them." Her gaze was so intimidating that Celdric nodded absentmindedly.

She turned around, taking the shortcut. The path that Alexander had forbidden Laurel to take… the path that his room was on.

Laurel walked boldly with her chin tilted up.

When she got to the sitting room, she stood on the stairs, staring down at the Wayne family.

She took her time descending the stairs.

"Now look who we have here. The title of being the madam of the Wayne family must have gotten in her head that she had to keep the family and the elders waiting." Jade, a cousin to Alexander, flung her hair to the back before standing to meet Laurel.

"Oh.." Jade covered her lips with her fingers. "She is already acting like she owns the mansion."

She walked up to Laurel's face. "You are nothing more than the trash my cousin picked from the roadside…" Jade leaned in closer, her voice lowering into a cruel whisper. "Everyone here knows you trapped him into this marriage. A one-night stand doesn't make you a wife… It makes you a joke."

"AARGH!" Jade cried out, followed by the gasps of shock.
