"Hey, Hannah. Here, have Zoe drink some." The man in the cell opposite of Hannah's, whose name was David, threw a bottle of water towards Hannah's cell. He had a good throw and it landed where she could easily reach.
"Thank you." Hannah said as she reached for the bottle of water. "Thank you so much, David." She repeated so that he knew she was very grateful. It was all he had to drink but he gave it to her instead.
She walked back to where Zoe was sitting. She looked at the little girl with pity. The girl looked really thin for the past three days. This was because of the new life they were introduced to.
At first, they had received extra care than the other prisoners for a few days. Later on, everything just stopped . They were no longer receiving any care at all. Not even a single grain was sent their way. This has been happening for more than a week at the time. While other prisoners receive a small portion of a meal once every two days.
Hannah's mattress was taken away. So was the blanket.
She and Zoe had never starved and craved for food as they did at the time. Even from where they ran away from, she was able to sneak some bread or leftovers for her and Zoe. At most, they would spend two days without eating. But here, they have gone a whole week without getting anything. Only occasionally they would get water from David. Hannah wondered if that was the way of the Alpha king tormenting them.
Hannah watched as Zoe emptied the whole bottle. She wanted the water so bad as well. But Zoe's satisfaction was much more important to her.
"Mommy, you always give me everything. What about you?" Zoe asked her mother with worried eyes.
Hannah forced a smile through her weakness. "Don't worry about me, baby. I will be fine. I just want you to have something in your stomach, no matter how little." Hannah assured her.
"Are we going to be alright, mommy?" Zoe asked again. She had hopeful eyes as she asked.
"We are, baby. We are." Hannah answered her. She told the little girl what she wanted to hear. Not because she thinks it was going to happen.
A big part of her feels they were going to die there eventually. But she can't let the little girl know that.
Hannah also thought of how she might never see her mate again before she finally dies. She only saw his wolf once and she has no idea what his human actually looks like.
"What is on your mind?" Davids' voice cut Hannah's trail of thoughts. He has been a great help to Hannah and her daughter. At first, Hannah didn't like him at all. She felt he was too nosy as he kept asking her if she was the Alpha King's mate.
"Hmm?" Hannah asked. She was sitting on the floor and used her finger to draw patterns in the sand. She kept avoiding the question. Even though she understood she was actually mates to the Alpha king. But she didn't trust David enough to admit it to him because he was a rogue and a prisoner. Rogues cannot be trusted.
As their cells were opposite each other, he was the only one she could talk to. Because of that, she eventually got used to him. She knows he cannot hurt them in their current position. They were both locked up and there was a passage separating them.
"I said, what is on your mind?" David repeated his question.
"Nothing much. Just wondering how long we are going to be kept here and treated the way we are being treated." Hannah answered him.
"I see." David acknowledged.
"What are you in here for?" Hannah asked. She didn't want him to start drilling into her thoughts. Or start asking questions about her mate again. She turned to Zoe and saw the little one had slept. She smiled a little before Davids' voice made her turn to him.
"Many things." David answered. "A lot of scary things, if I may add."
"Like what?" Hannah asked further.
"Kid, you don't want to know all that." David assured her.
"Kid?" Hannah snorted. "You are not that much older than I am. You cannot call me a kid." She said,
David chuckled lightly. "You don't know that for sure."
"Tell me then. How old are you?" Hannah dared him.
"Almost 300." He simply said with a shrug.
Hannah gasped in a teasing way before she began to chuckle. "Then you really look good for your age, David." She added before laughing again.
"Thank you." David responded.
"For someone that is almost '300' years, I say you have no idea what sarcasm is." Hannah pointed out.
David gave a light chuckle.
From where Hannah stood, she could see that he shook his head.
"I know you don't believe me. But I am." He assured her.
"How is that possible? Are you a vampire or something?" She asked as she rolled her eyes.
"Or something like that." He repeated that part.
"How is that?" Hannah asked , pit confused. "What do you mean?"
"I am half werewolf and half vampire." David explained.
Hannah couldn't hide her shocked expression. "I have never met a hybrid before."
David chuckled. "There is a first time for everything and now, you have."
Hannah nodded. "So, what are you in here for?" She asked again.
"I am here because someone hates me," David said and gave a dry laugh. "I really don't want to talk about it." He quickly added, not wanting Hannah to ask further questions.
"Oh ok." Hannah said. "Your mate must be worried about your situation."
"She died fifty years ago." He mumbled.
"Oh... I am sorry." Hannah simply said, not knowing how to console him any further.
"It's ok. At least, I got to know and feel what to love and to be loved in return was like. She was the most wonderful person I have ever met." He added and smiled in the distance.
"What about you? What are you in here for?" It was Davids' turn to ask her. "What must you have done that brought you here with a child?" He looked at the direction of Zoe's sleeping figure.
Hannah sighed.
