Samsara – Chapter 3: The Pain

Bathed in warm sunlight, Reiji walked hand in hand with Mina.

The soft grass beneath his feet, the boundless sky above, the breeze gentle against his skin.In the distance, a quaint village came into view—wooden houses, the cheerful voices of people laughing together.

Everything was peaceful, beautiful, and warm.

A strange sense of nostalgia welled up within him.He couldn't explain it, but he didn't dislike the feeling.

In the village, Mina introduced him to many people. An old woman who shared vegetables.A young man playing with children.A farmer working his fields. All of them, so far removed from the world Reiji once knew.

And yet, their warmth seeped into his heart.

"…Interacting with people like this…"

The words slipped out before he realized it—and surprised even himself.

Ordinary life. The kindness of others. To Reiji, these things felt entirely new.

One day, surrounded by children, Reiji found himself in the middle of a ruckus.

"Are you gonna marry Mina-chan, big brother?""No fair! Mina-chan's my big sister!"

Reiji: "Huh!? What the hell are you talking about—"

Mina, with a soft giggle, casually responded.

"Hmm? Maybe I will. 💫"

Reiji: "…Mina, was that a joke?"

Mina: "Yeah. …Half of it."

"…Huh!?"

The children burst into laughter. Reiji scratched his head and turned away, but Mina caught the slight blush spreading across his cheeks.

Reiji began to wonder.

This girl… she always seemed to see right through him.And yet, at times, she behaved like she wanted to lean on him.

She was a mystery…

Meanwhile, Mina watched Reiji's face from the side.Flustered around the children, yet offering them a clumsy smile—Something about it stirred her deeply.

She hadn't expected to feel this way.She knew she shouldn't.

But even in these sweet moments, a strange ache stirred within Reiji.

A sudden throb deep in his chest. It came when he heard laughter. When a child smiled at him. When he sat before a steaming meal.

"…Damn it… again…"

The pain in his soul twisted as if to say,"You don't deserve this."

At first, he thought it was his imagination. But the more he tried to ignore it, the stronger it grew—until one day, it knocked him to his knees.

Clutching his forehead, he gasped.

"Damn it…"

A gentle hand touched his back.

"Are you okay? …Does it hurt?"

Mina's quiet voice. Reiji turned his eyes away.

"…It's nothing. Just tired."

He didn't want her to know.He didn't want her to see through him.But Mina shook her head softly.

"No… It's your soul. It's trembling."

His heart skipped a beat.

She could see it—everything. His regrets, his guilt, and his desperate longing for forgiveness.

Words failed him.Exposed, ashamed, he felt like running.

—Do I even deserve to be near her?

Every time he felt happiness,a voice deep inside screamed.

"You don't belong here."

He tried to ignore it.Pretended he didn't hear.

But Mina had seen through him.And that made something inside him burn.

—Why didn't you say anything?

—Why… why were you kind, knowing everything?

The anger surged.Anger at himself most of all.

"…What the hell am I supposed to do… with this pain…?"

There was no answer. But he had to ask.

He had no right to be forgiven. And still, part of him—when with Mina—wanted to be.

That weakness was what he hated the most.

Then it happened.

The wind stopped. The air shifted.

Faraway trees rustled as if warning of something.Mina lifted her face.

"…They've arrived…"

"…Who?"

"The soul's guide… the one meant to lead you. They're near now."

Her voice trembled.

She stared into the distance—as if the one she had waited for had finally arrived. But at the same time, she seemed to know their moment together was ending.

Reiji followed her gaze, slowly rising to his feet.
