Chapter 17: Selling the Job for a Price

As smoke curled from the stove, Aunt Wei took the spatula from her daughter and smiled:"Yunyi, come inside and sit down. You'll eat dinner with us tonight."

But Yunyi shook her head gently. These days, every household was barely getting by—how could she accept that kindness so easily?"Auntie, I actually came to talk about something important."

The look in her eyes was enough.Back then, if it hadn't been for Grandpa Chu, her husband might've lost his leg. The Wei family owed that old man a debt they could never repay.

She didn't hesitate."Hongguo! Take over the cooking. Stir it a few more times and serve it."

Then she pulled Yunyi into the house."What is it, sweetheart? Speak freely."

Yunyi didn't mention the mess with the Sun family—there was no need to dirty everyone's ears:"Auntie, ever since Grandpa passed… that house is full of memories. I just want a change of scenery, so… I signed up for countryside work."

"What?!"Aunt Wei's eyes widened. "You signed up for the countryside?!"

Yunyi nodded. "Mm."

Aunt Wei's voice rose with worry:"Do you know how hard life is out there?"

Yunyi quickly replied:"It's just temporary. I'll definitely come back."

Aunt Wei finally calmed a little, poked her lightly on the forehead, and sighed:"Well then, what did you come here for today?"

Yunyi glanced over at Hongyan, then looked back at her aunt:"Auntie, if Hongyan doesn't find a job this month, won't she be sent to the countryside too?"

That struck a nerve. The smiles vanished from mother and daughter's faces."Yes… if nothing comes up by the end of the month, she'll be sent away."

Yunyi didn't beat around the bush anymore:"I have a job right now. Would you be interested in taking it?"

The mother and daughter pair instantly turned their eyes toward Yun Yi.They both knew very well that her adoptive mother had left her a formal job position. That was why Aunt Wei had said earlier: "You can come back anytime."

Aunt Wei finally realized what was happening and quickly waved her hands in refusal:"No, absolutely not! You can't just give up that job! Without it, how would you return to the city later?"

Yun Yi gently patted her hand to calm her down."Auntie, to be honest, a lot of people are eyeing this position. But I don't want to hand it over to just anyone."

"When I want to return to the city someday, my grandfather and father's friends— they won't leave me behind."

With the truth out in the open, both Aunt Wei and Wei Hongyan couldn't help but feel conflicted.Who wouldn't want to stay in the city instead of suffering in the countryside?

Seeing the sparkle of hope in her daughter's eyes, Aunt Wei asked once more to confirm:"Yun Yi, you're not tricking your auntie, are you?"

Yun Yi smiled gently."Auntie, weren't you also helping around the courtyard during Grandpa's funeral? You saw those people too, right?"

Aunt Wei, of course, remembered. Those guests weren't ordinary folk — their status was clear from the moment they entered the gates.

Realizing this wasn't something to be overly modest about, she nodded solemnly:"Alright then, we'll accept the job. And this debt, I'll remember."

Yun Yi grinned playfully:"Oh come on, Auntie! You and Hongyan helped me so much before — I still owe you!"

Aunt Wei, touched, spoke straightforwardly:"Alright then, no more formalities. How about 800 yuan? Will that work?"

She wasn't trying to be stingy — that amount already meant borrowing from others. Besides, job slots like this typically went for around 700 anyway.

Yun Yi had no intention of giving it away for free. Seeing the offer was sincere, she nodded and agreed.

She also gave them a heads-up about Sun Xiaoyan, who was temporarily covering the job. After all, when someone loses a prize that's already within reach, they're bound to go crazy.
