The air in Winterbell had shifted.
Flynn could feel it like a current beneath the skin something was stirring. Rumors slithered through the corridors of the palace, soft as moth wings but persistent. Some whispered about strange visitors meeting in secrecy, others about movements in the borderlands near the ruined kingdom of Elaris. And though none dared name him aloud, all trails pointed, somehow, back to Duke Khalid Caelum.
It had been five years since that fateful day.
Five years since Caelan had bled out under the sword of the man he once called brother.
Now, standing as Flynn Winterbell the heir to the very kingdom that Khalid now served he played the role the gods or fate had cursed him with. No one knew the truth of his past, not even his half-brother Lucian, who had grown oddly protective lately. And certainly not Elior Venstra, the charming viscount whose gaze lingered a bit too long and who always seemed one step away from asking questions Flynn couldn't answer.
This morning, however, everything changed.
A sealed letter, delivered by a frightened courier from the border village of Orlhen, arrived at Flynn's desk. No insignia. No sender. Only three words on the parchment:
"He returns soon."
Flynn's breath caught. His thoughts immediately turned to Khalid. But why the cryptic warning? Why now?
Lucian stepped into the study without knocking something he only did when alarmed. "Flynn," he said, his voice low. "We found a traveler at the city gates. He carried a crest an old one. From Elaris. He claims he used to serve under Caelan Lorne."
Flynn's blood turned to ice.
He turned, careful to hide the tremor in his fingers. "Is he alive?"
Lucian nodded. "Just barely. He insists on speaking to the crown prince and only the crown prince."
The past was clawing its way back.
Flynn rose slowly. "Bring him to me."
But deep down, he already knew this traveler wasn't here to reminisce.
He was here to unearth something long buried: the truth behind Khalid's betrayal… and perhaps, the key to uncovering the Duke's true agenda.
