Everything Made Sense, Yet So Confusing

KAEL

Malrik had said I would know as soon as I set my eyes on her. I thought he was just trying to make this difficult for me, but turns out he wasn't. He said it would click, and click it did.

It felt like something in me just snapped into place. It came alive, it found its purpose. And everything else but that didn't matter. Not the piercing pain that was licking through my body and making me feel like my insides were melting. Not the way my tattoos move and burn, glowing even though that has only happened when I had sex. And it has never, ever burned before.

All that pain didn't matter. What mattered was that it clicked. Everything seems to make sense, and yet I was still confused.

She had red hair… That was what kept playing over and over again in my head. Red hair that shone. Red hair that seems to call to me. That was all that went through my head as she walked to me. That, and how sinfully beautiful she was.

As she walked to me I noticed something like a dark cloud surrounding her, moving as she moved. It wasn't surrounding her; it was coming from inside her. An aura, dark and powerful, and now I understood why the heavens and hell were afraid of her. Why the world had trembled when she was born.

I understand now. She looked human, but she was anything but.

She stopped in front of me, kneeling so we were eye level. She placed her finger on my chin, and I hissed when that contact burned.

"What are you?" she asked softly, but her expression was one of pure rage.

"A… demon," I answered breathlessly while the blood still flowed out of my nose, and it only seemed to worsen the more she touched me.

She tilted her head, a look in her eyes. "This is not a joke. What the fuck are you?!"

Aah. She didn't know supernaturals existed, so that meant she didn't know what she was. She thought she was human. I probably shouldn't entertain her, I shouldn't let her know that not only humans walk this Earth, but I didn't hold control of my body any longer.

I let my glamour drop, revealing my true form. She gasped, stumbling back and landing on her back as she looked at me with fear and shock.

She opened her mouth and closed it, no words coming out. Then she pointed at the sin-eater, her hand shaking. "T-then, is he human?"

I shook my head, finally managing to breathe easily now that she wasn't touching me and that aura was no longer surrounding her. "He's a sin-eater."

Her eyes grew even wider. "As in, he eats sin? Like some kind of meal?"

When I nodded, she stared at me, blinking fast before she burst out laughing, loud and hard. As soon as she started laughing, whatever hold she had on me was gone and I gasped out a breath as the pain stopped, breathing heavily.

"Oh, this is some kind of joke, isn't it?" she asked as she finally stopped laughing, wiping tears from her eyes. "It's funny, alright. But those horns…" She crawled to me, raising her hand slowly and touching my horns.

I shivered, a moan slipping out of my lips. She flinched back, her eyes wide. "That was… creepy. And those horns seem so real. Where did you get them?"

I couldn't answer as I tried to make sense of what just happened. Just a moment away, her touch had burned me, and now…

"What are you?" I asked in a whisper because I couldn't understand what she was.

She smiled and my heart kicked against my chest. "Hi, I'm Aurora. A human."

"You're not." We both turned to see the sin-eater looking at Aurora. "You're not human."

"Then what am I, smart ass?" she asked, indulging him.

He shook his head, looking completely drained. "I don't know, but you're not human."

Her expression turned serious and she looked between us again, a thoughtful look on her face. And then she crawled to me slowly, her gaze fixed on my horns. She reached out, touching my forehead where the horns grew from, and her eyes grew wide.

I stayed still, trying to hold in my moan as she continued to touch me.

"This looks so real," she whispered.

"That's because they are."

She looked at me. "So what? You're trying to tell me that demons and whatever sin-eaters are real?"

"Rude," the sin-eater muttered under his breath but whined when she glared at him.

She looked between both of us before she clapped once, getting on her feet. "That's it. It's been a long, stressful day. I'm going home. I've entertained enough of this."

But then she turned towards her destroyed bike and her expression darkened.

"I'll get you a new one!" the sin-eater and I said at the same time, jumping to our feet.

She looked between the two of us, her expression softening. "Both of you are getting me new bikes."

"Deal," the sin-eater agreed while I nodded.

She sighed as she walked away. "Now I'll have to pay for a cab to get home. Not cool, boys. Not cool. I was having such a great day. A great week, in fact. And you came and ruined it with your supernatural bullshit."

It was almost fascinating how she could go from being a dark, powerful goddess, to… this.

"I'll drive you home," the sin-eater offered without hesitation, stepping forward.

I understood him. He was eager to please her. I understood, but I was still confused because I also felt the same way.

Malrik and I were going to have a long talk.

"I can drive you," I said, trying to keep my voice cool, even though I was… eager.

She stopped walking and turned to us. "Your names."

"Riven."

"Kaelvaren."

She turned to me with an eyebrow raised. "That's a really odd name." She turned to the sin-eater. "Riven, you drive me. Your horns make me uncomfortable." She said that last part without looking at me, and it… stung. Devils, what was this? What was going on?"

Riven gave me a smug smile over his shoulder as he followed behind her, and I just stood still, watching them go. I put my disguise back on, but I didn't move from where I stood

"Oh!" she exclaimed suddenly as she stopped walking, turning to me. "You'll need my address to deliver the bike." She pointed a finger at me. "That's all I'm giving you the address for, demon boy. Deliver the bike and I don't ever want to see your face again." She turned that finger to Riven. "Same with you."
