Chapter 10: Granny’s Pocket Watch

Golden morning light filtered through the magnolia trees lining Qi Foundation Plaza, where dozens of children in crisp uniforms milled about folding chairs. Lin Wantang paused at the entrance, shading her eyes beneath a wide-brimmed straw hat. Jasper, clutching his dragon-engraved pawn, bounced at her side.

“Mommy, are you hiding?” he whispered, peering around the hat’s brim.

She smiled, tucking stray curls behind her ear. “Just blending in.” She adjusted the collar of her trench coat, suppressing the urge to scan security cameras. Today was family day—an olive branch from Old Madam Qi, and she would accept it on her terms.

Inside the courtyard, marble busts of Qi Group’s founders looked down on miniature chessboards set atop low tables. Parents gathered in clusters, some snapping photos, others chatting about endowments and gala seating. At the far end, Old Madam Qi—resplendent in a jade-green cheongsam—stood beneath a silk canopy, greeting guests with a gracious nod.
