Chapter 109 Traveling Through the Night Nonstop

The street suddenly plunged into darkness.

Miss Jun pressed against the corner and couldn't see anything, only heard the clashing of weapons outside, accompanied by the muffled sound of weapons penetrating flesh.

But there were no cries of agony or pain, as if there were no people desperately fighting with swords.

These newcomers were not ordinary.

Miss Jun thought.

Should she go help?

But no sooner had the thought arisen than the noises outside abruptly stopped.

Was it over?

"Hurry up and move," the bearded man said.

The three men who were crouched behind the food stall finally stood up tremblingly, looking at the six men rolling on the ground.

Some were motionless, some were struggling to get up, and it was only then that low moans began to fill the dimly lit street.

"Was this money well spent?"

As the three stared in horror, the bearded man spoke.

The three men forced a grin.

"Yes, well spent," they said in unison.

The bearded man waved at them.

Only then did the three men move out.

Suddenly, one of the men on the ground grabbed a knife and stood up, scaring the three men into shouting.

The man swayed, using the knife to support himself so he barely didn't fall down.

Unperturbed, the bearded man continued to wave the three men over, personally leading them forward.

"You think you can escape?" the man with the hoarse voice started.

The three men jumped, and the bearded man also acted as if startled.

"Ha," he said, "You recognize me?"

The man seemed speechless and just looked at him.

The bearded man waved his hand.

"Look, whether or not I can escape is my business. Whether you can catch me is your business. Let's each worry about our own issues," he continued.

"If you dare, kill us," the man coldly shouted, pointing the knife at the people on the ground.

These people weren't killed?

The three men couldn't help but look towards the ground.

In the darkness, they couldn't see clearly, but they heard the bearded man laugh sneeringly.

"If you want to die by my hand, you have to pay," he said, his voice tinged with mockery,

then walked away without looking back.

The three men hurriedly followed him, though still not recovered from the shock, but now with some understanding.

"Noble Son Jiu," the short, fat man quickly caught up to him, "Do you know them?"

The bearded man didn't turn back and just grunted, unclear whether he knew them or not.

Another man also snapped out of it.

"Noble Son Jiu, these people came for you, not for us, right?" he said.

The bearded man glanced at them.

"So?" he said, "What difference does it make?"

Difference?

A huge difference!

"Because, it was us who led them to you, you took care of them to help us out..." The short, fat man also regained his senses and said, his gaze falling on the bearded man's chest.

There were several silver banknotes stuffed there.

The money they had paid him.

The bearded man clicked his tongue.

"What about it? Is there something wrong with the money I collected?" he said, "So what if these people came for me? Didn't you also come for me? You got yourselves involved, didn't you? Is it like I forced you to come?"

His sharp questions left the three men, who had just been scared, slightly confused in their thoughts.

"It seems so."

"I'm taking money from you, so what? Did you see how good I am?" The bearded man said with a raised eyebrow. "I'm this good. If it wasn't for your money, would I bother fighting them? I could have just left, I can get away, but can you? Can you escape from them?"

The three men shook their heads.

They really couldn't.

"There you go." The bearded man said, glaring at them and shaking his head. "Then why aren't you running yet? These people swarm like locusts. Once their reinforcements arrive, even if you gave me all the wealth in the world, I couldn't save you."

The three men seemed both to understand and not understand. Urged by his shout to run, they instinctively hurried their steps, each dashing off in a different direction and quickly disappearing into the night.

The street immediately became lively, and not just this street—soon, it seemed, the entire capital started stirring.

But such liveliness was always left behind.

Miss Jun, watching a figure nimbly weaving through the streets and alleys ahead, admired him again. Capable of fighting and escaping, this was the kind of man her master would call a true hero.

After several twists and turns, they reached the city gate.

The gate was still open, but there were already quite a few city patrolmen standing there. Under the bright torchlight, their expressions looked a bit tense, clearly, they had received some news.

Leaving the city might not be so easy.

Miss Jun was thinking to herself when suddenly, the figure ahead rushed towards the city gate without stopping.

"What are you still doing here? Didn't I tell you to search the city?" he shouted loudly.

Surprised by the sudden charge, the city patrolmen were startled and about to reprimand him when the bearded man held up his identification plate.

"Move quickly, but keep it low-profile," he said sternly. "Duke of Chengguo has many old friends and officers in the capital, if they knew the Duke of Chengguo's heir was here, they would definitely obstruct the arrest."

Seeing the identification plate and hearing this, the city patrol relaxed and realized the situation.

"So it's the Duke of Chengguo's heir who was captured," said the lead city patrolman. "No wonder superiors only ordered martial law without specifying who, should we close the city gate then?"

While they talked, the men approached the bearded man.

"No need to close it. Since the Princely Heir has entered the capital, he surely wouldn't dare to leave now. There are certainly people in the city sheltering him." The bearded man said.

Indeed it was so. Once in the capital and his whereabouts exposed, hiding within the city was actually the safest, difficult to be tracked down immediately if he took refuge in the residences of high officials. But if he left the city, his movements would be completely exposed.

After all, one couldn't escape the territory of the capital to return to Zhenbei in just a half day.

"Do you need anything else…" The city patrol asked.

Before they could finish, the bearded man suddenly struck with an open hand, the few city patrolmen caught off guard fell down, and chaos erupted at the city gate.

"Close the city gate!"

Shouts broke out, but the bearded man had already seized a horse, his blade flashing a cold light as he sliced open a path and sped through.

"Close the city gate, you fools." He laughed heartily as he flashed through the gate, his laughter lingering.

The city patrol immediately mounted their horses, but just then a herd of cows, sheep, and pigs charged in.

It turned out that the bearded man had opened the livestock wall beneath the city gate, releasing the animals that were held there for sale.

This caused the pursuing patrols to be thrown into disarray as they fell off their animals; meanwhile, the city guards were also busy trying to round up the beasts, plunging the area in front of the gate into further chaos.

"Daddy, daddy, the sheep have escaped!"

Amid the chaos, a girl's shrill scream was heard, and the city guards turned to look, seeing a girl thrown amidst the cows, sheep, and pigs.

And more people were coming in from outside the gate.

These were the livestock owners, who had been sleeping soundly in straw huts outside the livestock wall, and were definitely startled by the commotion.

While the city guards scolded these people to handle the runaway livestock, they didn't notice that the girl who cried out for her father didn't come back in.

Running for who knows how long, the stench of cattle and sheep gradually faded, Miss Jun sniffed hard, catching a faint, almost imperceptible scent.

It was the medicinal powder she carried for self-defense, but also for tracking due to its unique yet hard-to-detect smell.

Zhu Zan had stepped on it when she had thrown it on the street during his scuffle in the city.

However...

Miss Jun looked ahead, the night dark as the bottom of a pot, the darkest time before the dawn, but this did not hinder her from recognizing the direction.

That direction wasn't north, but rather south, and in fact, they hadn't left the capital very far.

Was he still not fleeing far, perhaps following the principle that the most dangerous place is the safest?

Miss Jun seemed to hear the echoing hoofbeats of pursuers behind her.

Her gaze fell on the gradually emerging figure ahead; he was still on foot, probably had his horse run off when he broke through the livestock wall.

Where was he going?
