Silver Lining

When Veronica opened her door, unsurprisingly, she saw her driver and several other attendants waiting suspiciously by the door.

Veronica glowered slightly and asked her driver, "Were you eavesdropping again?"

"What? No, of course not," her driver hurriedly denied. "I would never do something like that. That would betray your trus—"

One of the maids interrupted to say, "We're sorry. We was only listening out of concern for you. We didn't mean nothing by it."

A scowl briefly appeared on Veronica's face, but that quickly disappeared.

"Well, just don't do it again."

Everyone present was surprised. Veronica was very protective of her privacy and would usually become furious when she found out someone was violating it.

'Ah, she must be in a good room because of her date with Roland,' her driver thought.

Veronica then turned to the attendants and requested, "I need some food prepared to take out. You can take your time if you need, but make sure it's perfect."

Her driver frowned in confusion. "Miss, aren't you having dinner with Roland? Why do you need food prepared?"

Veronica smiled happily and answered, "Oh, Roland cancelled our dinner plans; he's too busy at the moment."

The confusion on the driver's face deepened. 'If he cancelled your plans, why are you so happy about it?'

Seeing through her driver's thoughts, Veronica said, "Since he's too busy to go out for dinner with me, I shall take dinner to him.

"We can spread out a rug on the office floor and have a picnic. I'll feed him some food and maybe he'll even feed me back."

A girlish squeal escaped her mouth; she was too excited.

As the saying goes: every cloud has a silver lining. Even though she couldn't go to a fancy restaurant with him, they would still have dinner together. And with this office picnic plan of hers, it would be even more intimate than eating out.

Her driver smiled dotingly. "Well if that's the case, I'll go and check the kitchen. Everything will be perfect. Nothing but the best for our young miss."

"Oh, thank you very much." Veronica continued to fantasize about her new plan as the staff prepared the meal.

By seven in the evening, most people had already gone home. Barov had been in since before the sun had risen and had insisted on staying until Roland left. Roland couldn't accept that, so he'd called security to take Barov home to rest. As a result, Roland was all alone on his floor.

Suddenly, the elevator 'ding' echoed through the floor.

'I wonder who that could be.'

Being alone at night in a building was always a bit creepy, so Roland shivered slightly at the thought of a murderer coming for him.

However, the person who appeared in his sight was beyond his expectations.

"Oh, what are you doing here?" he asked as a broad smile spread across his face.

"I thought you might be hungry, so I brought you some food," replied Veronica as she passed the food hamper over to him.
