Interview

In his office, Roland sat at his desk with Carter sitting opposite.

"So, I've had a few people look into your background, I'm sure you understand."

"Yes, of course, it only natural for someone who may be in charge of the safety of someone in your position."

"Great. Now then, I'd like to just get a clear grasp of your qualifications. You finished school, getting the grades required to join the army as an officer. You served with distinction and were honorably discharged after your first tour. Since then, you've been jumping around between security jobs. Is that all correct?"

"Yes," Carter replied quickly.

"Okay then, what was wrong with your previous jobs? Why didn't it work out?"

Carter hesitated for a second as he tried to sort out his answer in his head and then replied, "Most of those jobs were temporary gigs. If some friends or friends of friends were a man down, they would call me in. However, the security market is highly saturated with ex-forces, so it's difficult to hold down a permanent job. That's why I decided it would be foolish not to take you up on your offer."

"Well, I'm glad you did. To be honest, this is merely a formality. I have the final say over who works for me, and I want you for the job. It's been difficult to find someone I like for this role, so I'm thrilled you came."

Carter sighed in relief. He knew that Roland wanted him for the job, but he didn't know how much say he actually had in the matter.

Roland then explained, "Now then, I'll outline your duties. As I mentioned before, we already have security staff, so you won't necessarily need to be watching the perimeter or whatever the term is. You'll be in charge of my security for personal arrangements, and essentially, you'll be overseeing my personal security as well as the security of those around me. That all sound good?"

Carter nodded briskly. "Yes, this is what I was expecting."

"Excellent," said Roland as he smiled brightly. "I think I mentioned this before, but you'll also be required to handle some other things from time to time, things that I'll require someone trustworthy to deal with."

A worried expression appeared on Carter's face.

"Don't worry, I know what you're thinking," Roland reassured. "I won't ask you to do anything illegal; there won't be any hits ordered. Ha ha ha ha. It will mostly be delivering sensitive documents or files.

"I'll occasionally as you to guard or escort other people. I like to have someone trustworthy for these things. Are you up for it?"

A broad smile appeared on Carter's face. "Yes, I'm confident I'll be able to do this well!"

"Fantastic, welcome to Graycastle," Roland said as he extended his hand.

Carter shook his hand and replied, "Glad to be here."

"Right then, I guess I'll have Barov show you around now. He'll get you settled in."

After a few more pleasantries, Carter got up and walked toward the door.

"Oh, while I remember, there's a girl who will probably be the person you need to protect most frequently. I've recently started… well… now's not the time for this. I can fill you in later. You go speak to Barov, get him to show you around."
