Something Only Humans Knew

The morning that came after was another disaster. Yu Shenqi didn't think the hospital would let Xu Rouguang watch over her son even though she specified that no outsiders should be there after dark. She had no idea how that handsome secretary bribed the doctors and the nurses to get in, but she was still enraged by the idea.

She wasn't one to be running around, and so she only stomped angrily towards the VIP ward where Lai Mingjie was staying. The mother held the door and slowly turned the knob to avoid alarming the criminal inside. She peeked from the crack, and her eyes almost fell out when she spotted the two.

Like a loyal servant, Xu Rouguang didn't leave Lai Mingjie's side that night. He was left to lie down at the side of the wide bed, fingers laced with the demon king's functioning hand. His other arm served as his own pillow. He was sleeping peacefully.

Lai Mingjie was also sleeping soundly, his brows not frowning in pain and restraint like the first time he was seen by his mother in this bed. His complexion had also improved a lot, and his heart was beating like normal. No more difficulties like yesterday.

Yu Shenqi stared at them as her expression changed from bad to worse. She was upset that this man was allowed to stay with her son; however, seeing them like this made her feel like a villain in a soap opera. Then again, she had to continue playing the role to protect the credibility of a Lai's word. If she let her son frolic with someone else, what would she say to the Han family?

Also, of all people... her Jie chose another man?

Lai Julong entered the room and saw the look on his wife's face. He frowned and turned to his son, soon understanding the complex look on Yu Shenqi's eyes. The father went to her side and patted her shoulder first to wake her up before he went to work with Xu Rouguang.

"Secretary Xu." Lai Julong reached out to pat the general's shoulder, and he was greeted by an emotionless gaze from the non-human. However, the cold eyes grew warmer as they got clearer as if recognizing the person. The father only waved his hand as if beckoning the man to get off of the bed.

"G-Good morning, CEO Lai..." Xu Rouguang got up slowly, not wanting to wake up the patient. He kept his head lowered as he forgot that Lai Mingjie's parents would be there in the morning. Also, it was as if he was so used to getting scolded by someone's parents. He lifted his eyes once to meet Yu Shenqi's gaze. "Madam Lai..."

"Thank you for watching over Jie last night. You should go home and prepare for work now. We'll take over." Lai Julong was being too civil towards Xu Rouguang, and even Yu Shenqi couldn't tell what he was thinking. His heavy eyes watched Xu Rouguang bow to them politely before taking his leave. He even saw the man spoke with the nurses outside as if thanking them.

The father turned to the mother who still stood where she was. "What are you terrified of?"

"The Han family wouldn't like this. What if they find out?" Yu Shenqi sighed, and she placed a hand on her chest to calm herself down. "Does this mean we're not getting any grandchildren?"

"You're thinking too far in the future. Let Jie be happy before he gets married to someone he doesn't even like." Lai Julong went to his wife again and held onto her shoulders. He then stroked at her hair and hooked the strands behind her ear. "He promised to go with the marriage. He'll stick with it. Just give him this. For now, let's make sure that Secretary Xu isn't planning on harming our son."

Yu Shenqi's eyes slid to the side to look at her husband. "Are you saying I married you without liking you? Or was it me that you didn't like?"

Lai Julong chuckled while he then pocketed his hands. It was as if he knew he couldn't touch for her for the next minutes. "Don't try to make this against me. You know you only chose me back then to fend off bad choices."

"...Even if I did, I never liked anyone before you. Even if we both worked hard in this relationship, I didn't even give up and cheat." Yu Shenqi turned to face her husband, her brows knitted. "I can't let this continue. Tianshi would never forgive Jie if she finds out. Why would she want to get married to him after that? What would she say to us who consented this?"

"What do you think Jie would say to us?" Lai Julong only shook his head. He didn't want to argue with his wife like this. She wasn't like a gem he found on a shore one day; she was a million-dollar diamond everyone tried to own. Though it took more than money in that auction, he won her. She was the one who chose him, not the other way around.

However, right now, she was getting really worried about trivial matters. They didn't need the Han family, but at least they needed a daughter who could stand next to their prince. If it wasn't Han Tianshi, then who would they give their son?

Yu Shenqi stared at him with the most hostile eyes she could, but there was a limit to what she could muster. This was her husband, not some thug who was trying to touch her. She then sighed before shaking her head, a hand soon landing on her forehead. "You're right. We need to run checks on this Xu Rouguang guy. He's just so weird I'm worried about our son."

"And Jie had been too stiff until now." Lai Julong smiled as he found the signs that she wouldn't scratch him in the face if touched. He reached out to pet her head. "Why don't we sit down there and wait for Jie to wake up?"

Unknown to them, Lai Mingjie was already awake. He had been listening to them with his eyes closed, fighting the urge to blush. He never heard how the two of them got together; neither was he interested to know like a normal child. He was way older than those two, and he wasn't going to act like a curious child towards them.

However, circumstances were different these days. This was the first lifetime where he got a fiancee and another person showering him with romantic love. Dealing with these needed places he could learn from, and his very own parents weren't exceptions. He couldn't discuss these human emotions with non-humans; he could only depend on what these humans knew.

Now that they had settled down, he could feign waking up. He began moving and groaning before opening his eyes. The hand Xu Rouguang held felt so cold now that he had already left. His supposed forced happy greeting to his parents wouldn't play properly as he kept on looking at his vacant hand.

Perhaps he couldn't lie to them anymore about him and Xu Rouguang. Hahah, Lai Mingjie wanted to ridicule himself. Never did he think he would ever say things like this. He never believed in falling in love as it was something exclusive to humans. Even if he had become human, he would never regard himself as someone who could love anyone.

Then again, deep inside, he had this feeling. Xu Rouguang looked so happy loving him; would he feel the same, too?
