Chocolate

"You're back!" Fern announced from behind as she entered the suit after us, a bag of chocolates hanging with her.

"Where are the others?" Ton asked.

She looked at the door to the girls' room. "They were about to fall asleep, so I went for some," she ended her sentence with a sign to the chocolate she must have bought just then.

"Of course! May must have binged on a new anime the whole last night and Jessy was awake because of you!" He just discovered, referring to James. "Shut up, Ton," James retorted, his voice soft. I took a look at James. He does not call us by names unless it is to comfort us in some dire situation or to warn us. This time, it was a warning. He cares about privacy but not to this extent, not with us. We are the best friends he has. He is like me; a small countable number of good friends, with us being more close.

Then, Ton and I exchanged glances; clearly, it was something he did not expect either. In fact, we used to always hear other senior boys say things at school since Jessy and James were dating and sharing the same roof. The only reaction from James would be a careless smile or a smirk or a very unholy remark like, 'Yeah, she was amazing last night,' or something along the lines of 'Sad to know your girl makes you crave unlike mine.' Of course, he never said those things to Ton, he would simply smile or in some extreme cases of giddiness, even nod with a grin, I never had the gut to make a joke of that sort openly. After a few moments, he looked at the three of us, seemingly realizing his words as he went off the living area.

"Sai," Ton called out. "Something's off," he said. I said nothing. Indeed, I have been sensing it all this day.

"Um, you want chocolate?" Fern interrupted. Did we forget she was here just now? Then, I realized that Ton actually made the remark with a girl here; was it not supposed to be heard by her. He was careful to not say whatever he wants to in Jessy's presence, but would not Fern's presence be the same and equally no good?

"Yeah," he said, he did not realize something which I did probably or I was the only one that felt conscious of a girl amidst us with the knowledge of Ton's remark. I said I didn't want any while he sat there eating chocolate. I walked to the girls' door and knocked. They did not seem to have any disturbance. Then, I took my phone out and called May. It has been months since I used my phone for this purpose. After a good amount of time, she lifted the call. Her ringer volume was loud enough for me to hear through the door.

"Sai?" She groaned. "It's almost seven," I said.

"We're back, should we order the food to here itself?" Then I realised that it was too early to eat. It was not even seven; it was only 6:40 pm. 'Almost seven' would be ridiculous if May got a proper look at the time.

"Why so early? And why are you calling me? Isn't James around?"

"He is," I said and waited for her response, which was the end of the call after two seconds.

Ton was munching a chocolate. I thought Fern got them for the girls but she did not try to give them. Didn't she say May and Jessy were about to sleep off? And, now they seem to be in a very nice sleep already. "For who are those?" I asked about the chocolates as I sat with them.

"They're already asleep," she said, looking very satisfied to feed all the chocolate to Ton. Sure, we could let them sleep in for a good two hours more.
