That Nerd

POV: May

I was going through some social media sitting in the last bench. The teacher did not seem to be bothered by the noisy class and I would surely bother liking all the hilarious anime memes and amazing fan-arts. Then, a notification floated at the top of my screen. I was surprised when the sender was shown, 'Sai'. The emoticon beside his name made me giggle; it was a nerd emoticon. He has a perfect sight and no glasses. I saved it that way when I first got my phone and never changed it. Not when he denied me nor when he confessed to me. He is a very good friend to me. Maybe, we do have the potential to be more but I didn't want it. I would love him as a nice friend.

Then I realised that it has been a really long time since that nerd messaged me. High school was so good, I reminisced. That nerd, he was so amazing back then. I soon opened the WhatsApp text and then, I was not very happy to know what he texted for.

'Nothing,' I typed and sent him. Then, a second later he was online, and then went offline leaving me on blue ticks. 'Nothing at all, really,' I sent him again. Sai leaves you on blue ticks without any acknowledgement if he doesn't not agree on something, which seemed to be the case now. He is online and the ticks are blue but nothing more.

There was nothing more I can do so I switched back to the previous app. Then, I got one more message. 'Jessy and I are worried. Please May, tell me,' it said and the new information shocked me to the core.

He and Jess? Since when do they talk to each other? I sensed that Jess was trying very hard when we met up recently, slowly turning the flow of our conversation towards James but never did I think she would talk to Sai about it. Jess does not really adjust well with Sai. But of course everything is possible when you try to understand your loved one when he is being so difficult.

Suddenly the screen rolled up and in came another text. 'You are leaving me on seen, really?' Then came another. 'Did you get caught using the phone in class?'

Then I realised I kept him waiting for a good three minutes. He was quite brave when we are not talking in person. But in the past, he was just like this even in person. Now he has changed and wish for the old him. I decided to end the chat some way or the other.

'Yes, she got caught.' That should do. Then I went offline and decided to put my phone aside for the rest of the day.

I should see James soon and talk to him. He cannot keep going like this with everything. He should not deal with everything without Jess actually being by his side. He should trust himself and her more. Except for Sai and Ton, we're all in the same city. They were a 100 kilometres away, a two hour journey. I can meet James after college if we decide on the place because I can't do this at his home with Jess around.

I called him and he asked me go to his hospital where he works since he was busy for the day.

I don't see knowing his problem as a burden, for the rest always try to get it out. But I should persuade him and give him some moral support to share it with Jess.
