Love Letter

Next day morning, we went to school as usual. The teacher was yet to come and James was usual surrounded by three girls right beside me. They tried to look all nice and peachy. James had an uninterested face on but they started to flirt.

"Don't even bother." I said for the first time and it was what I had always wanted to say.

James chuckled beside me before replying to the girls, "You heard her."

Their faces were confused. But the entry of the teacher did not leave them with anytime to get their heads around the matter. After all, I was a mere helper for anyone to pass on their letters and gifts to him.

At the end of the day, we were packing our bags to return home and that was when I found a red crushed paper. It was folded not very neatly but looked like a love letter. I wondered who would give a love letter without an envelope. I wanted to show it to James first but he was not around. I fiddled it in my hand for a while.

"Whoa, whom are you trying to give it to?" The girl behind me asked. She was a good friend.

"Well, no one. I received this." I told her and she urged me to open it. I wanted to see who actually found a way to sneak in a love letter into my books without James's knowledge. If he had known, he would have taken it. That was established right the day before.

I unfolded it out of curiosity. The paper was bigger than usual but there was not much written. And the handwriting already made me happy as my heart quickened its pace.

'I will hold you to your promise, no excuses there.

I didn't know it meant anything to you to receive a love letter until you complained. So here we are.

But if I really start to write you a love letter, I will have to write my whole life down and that's a bad idea.

I love you.'

The letter said. The words, 'I love you' were big and bold. The letter was dated to the previous day. It did not have the sender's name or any clue to the sender.

"That's . . . new for a love letter to be like this," the friend who asked me to open it said.

"I can't believe he forgot to write his name," another girl peeked into my letter and stated laughing.

I then felt a little invaded so I hugged my letter to my heart and hid it from them. "Why are you reading my letter?" I asked the two other girls who were standing in front of me; I had not noticed when they arrived.

"Hey, there's something written on the other side too," one of them said.

I quickly turned the paper and noticed it really wasn't empty. I skipped it when I first unfolded the letter because of the position it was written at. Now that I think of it, maybe the improper way of folding the letter had a reason.

'Can I expect a kiss?'

I quickly folded the letter at I put it back in my bag. I only hoped that those girls could not get a proper view. But I wasn't very lucky.

"He must be bold or you are easy. A kiss?" One girl asked.

I had to cover my face as I told them, "Go away."

"But, seriously, who will you kiss? Who wrote this?"

"I should go home," I told them as I packed James's bag and carried it along with mine. I will wait for him at the gate. He will know to go to the gate when he doesn't find his bag.

After a little time had passed, he walked towards me at put his bag on, taking it from me. Dad would drop us to school in the morning on his way to work and in the evening, we walked home; the distance wasn't very long.

On the way I asked him, "Was that why you asked me for your book last night? Because you put a letter for me there?"

He smiled and confirmed it, "Yup!"

We did not talk about that anymore. I knew then that he was just waiting to see if I'd do something about the kiss. Well, I only had to make up my mind so that I would not feel too awkward when I decided to answer him.

On the Sunday of that week, we went to the same park that he is now heading to daily. It is very close to our home. It was still early in the morning, and it was just the two of us that day. We sat on bench side by side and with no words or warning; I had kissed him for the first time. It was my first kiss as well as his. It was just a sweet innocent peck, nothing like the kiss we share now. It sealed our love.
