CHAPTER 99: HE WAS TEMPTED

Neither had she. He was out to flirt with her, and he was too risky. She didn't like risks or surprises and he was dangerously full of both. She had obligations and business, and she feared what lurked between them.

In the cab of his pickup as they had returned to the resort, Leigh had felt very small and uncertain.  "Amoteh means strawberry in the Chinook language, isn't that right?"

"There are strawberries here, yes."

"On the Strawberry Hill? I heard about it today. The inlet by that big, black rock that widens with the tide and creates an island from that peninsula. They say that long ago, in whaling days, an enslaved Hawaiian swam to shore as the ship wrecked. He cursed the island because he knew he was dying there and not his homeland."
