Rescue Mission (1)

The route that Oscar was taking would lead him directly across his families farm. He remembered passing by it on the way to the research facility earlier that day and it looked like his mom, dad, and sister where still at the house. He was hoping that by the time he flew past, his family would have already left for the space port.

half an hour later, Oscar could finally see his families farm. It was nothing like before. The once beautiful farm house had a portion of its walls blown apart, fire and smoke still radiating from piles of debris. In his heart, he felt a pain, sorrow for the loss of his childhood home. Oscar had many memories in that house, many of them fun memories that he cherishes.

As he beats his home, Oscar slowed down to take a closer look. His father's truck was not in the driveway, it looked like they managed to escape before the house was destroyed.

Commander Harris walked into the cockpit and looked through the window. He stared at the wreckage of the building with sadness in his eyes.

"It's going to be like this everywhere on the planet now. I hope that people can get to the space port safely."

The commander patted Oscar's shoulders before turning around and heading back to wherever he was going.

Oscar, left alone wondered where his family was, and hoped that they were safe. He just wished for everything to finally be over and to reunite with his family.

The rest of the flight was uneventful, and before long the outline of the city where the space port was located could be seen just over the horizon.

"Oscar radio in and let command know we are approaching. Don't wanna get shit down after everything we've been through" Commander Harris's spoke over the radio.

Opening a communication link Oscar did as instructed. He got a reply and was directed on where he should land his ship. The mission was nearly over, and despite everything that has happened, Oscar was ready glad he went in the mission.

As he got closer, he could see destruction everywhere. Both Federation and Icillian fighters littered the fields outside the city limits. The once beautiful fields were burnt black, with metallic scraps painting the area. Anger arose from Oscar, seeing his once beautiful home, now looking like a warzone.

Seeing the destruction, Oscar hoped his family had made it to the city alright. The capital was the closest city to his families farm so chance of them coming here was extremely high. if he was.lucky, he might even be able to contact them and meet up to make sure they are fine.

Inside the city was not much better. He could see buildings completely destroyed, others partially destroyed, with some of their walls still intact. There was still fighting inside the city. The Icillians must have landed some troop transports before the Federation forces could destroy them.

Once they landed, Commander Harris asked Oscar to accompany him to the city command center.

"That's was some good flying you did out there Oscar" Commander Harris began. "You are an exceptionally gifted pilot and it's thanks to your piloting skill that we made it here".

Being complemented by the commander made Oscar blush a little. he seemed to have gained Commander Harris's trust.

The commander did not say another word after that and the pair just walked in silence until they reached the building where the command center was located.

The moment they walked through the doors entering the command center they were surrounded by chaos. There were soldiers and officials running back and forth other is yelling trying to be heard. Disappointment showed in Commander Harris his face as he continued walking through the disorder.

Oscar's home planet was not a military base. While it did have a defense Force protecting the space around the planet and a Garrison Force ensuring that public order was kept on the planet, it did not have a strong military presence. Most of the officers and soldiers sent here to guard the planet are either originally from the planet or soldiers have never seen a fight. This became even more clear as he saw how the officers were in a state of panic and how the command center had no sense of military order.

Grabbing a passing solider, commander Harris asked the man where the commander of the defence force was. At first the soldier wanted to shrug off the commander but then he noticed the commander insignia on his uniform and immediately straightened up.

"Commander! They are over there sir!"

The young soldier pointed over to his left, where a group of officers and civilians were grouped together overlooking a holoscreen. Even from across the room Oscar could see just how worried they were. It showed just how bad the situation currently was.

Commander walked up to where they were, being noticed by one of the officers first. Immediately the officer stood up straight and saluted the commander.

"Sir!" The other military officers quickly saluted in unison as well.

" At ease soldiers. Give me a situation report."

"Sir all but one of the ships from the research station have made it safely to the space port and are being loaded onto your Destroyed now" one officer started.

"The dropship was shot down before it could make it behind our defence line" A second officer continued.

"We sent a platoon of soldiers to protect the crash site until we could get another drop ship to pick up any materials and survivors" a third officer finished.

"We also have reports saying that there are civilians in the area that have gathered by the crash site being protected by the soldiers.

One of the officers pointed at the holoscreen and showed the commander where the dropship had crashed. The holoscreen showed a three dimensional image of the city and it's split between two colors red showing enemy control to territory and Greenwich showed territory that was still under Federation control. The crashed dropship from the research facility was behind the Icillian controlled part of the city.

Commander Harris looked at Oscar who has been standing by his side the entire time, not saying a word but paying attention everything happening. Oscar could see the plan was forming in the commander's head and more likely than not that plan was going to involve him.

"We need to send a retrieval ship to pick up any sense of material as well as any survivors that are still remaining before we are able to leave the planet."

Commander Harris then looked at Oscar before he continued speaking. "Oscar I want you to pilot your dropship to pick up any sensitive material and any survivors of the crash. You will also pick up the soldiers that are protecting the crash site before you head back here"

The commander then looked at the other officers and continued speaking.

" I want him to have air support do we have any available aircraft that can provide cover for him as well as two small dropships to pick up any extra civilians and survivors that he cannot fit."

The officers all looked at each other. One officer then looked at his datapad befor he replied.

"We have two fast response dropships available but no air support. Most of our air support is either destroyed from the first wave, heavily damaged, or being refuelled and won't be ready in time."

Just as she had feared Commander Harris had come up with a plan and it did involve him.

Oscar saluda Commander Harris and was about to leave for his dropship before the commander stopped him.

"Oscar you will have the same detachment of soldiers from the previous mission to accompany you to provide some relief for the forces currently protecting the dropship."

"Also I need you to complete this mission as fast as possible because we are leaving this planet."

Oscar then walked away, heading towards his dropship, his mind racing and his heart pounding. This rescue mission would rely not on his flying but on the ability of the soldier protecting him and this left a terrible taste in Oscar's mouth.
