I remember the soft touches and the cold nose. His eyes were hazel and mysterious. I used to chase him through the forest that was just pasted my backyard. The soft dirt traced my feet and the echo of the love birds filled my ears as I searched for my friend. "One! Two! Three! Ready or not here I come!" I screamed racing to find my friend. I giggled as I walked towards the bushes to find him. "Miso!" I screamed laughing as I heard the leaves rustle around me. "It's hide and seek not tag!!" I screamed out, my giggles erupted when I felt the tip of his nose touch my back. "Miso!" I turned around quickly but like lightening he was already gone. "Miso! No fair!" Suddenly my tiny heart was sad. "You can't use your ability like that to hide from me." I said pouting until Miso came back.
His dark fur glistened like rubies in the sun as his massive form came out from behind the 1000 year old tree. His hazel eyes were filled with joy and humor. "Miso you can't do that silly!" I shouted as I hugged him. He nuzzled into my shoulder causing me to laugh. "Mi-"
His growl exploded in my ear as his tail wrapped around me. The fur sticking up covered the top of my head. "Miso" I whispered. I placed my small hands on him and held my breath when I heard what set Miso off.
"Why are you here Marax?" I heard the strange voice ask. The trees grew quiet and the sky turned dark. The cold wind that suddenly came as nipping at my back, only Misos fur was keeping me safe.
"Marax?" I squeaked out. Miso's tail tightened around me. I felt the pleas of silence from him.
"What was that?" the strange voice asked. I gasped and covered my mouth.
"What was what?" Miso asked. My ears burned as I listened to his voice for the first time. It was deep and solid like my fathers was but more comforting.
"You ask why I am here Beluxis but yet, you haven't walked earth in a million years so tell me brother why are you here?" Miso's body rumbled as he spoke.
"Father sent me. He said you needed to come back. Apparently, there is a 6000 year old witch he needs handling and since you are...well you, He said youd best be suited for the job." Beluxis said, his voice making me nauseous and shake. His voice was cold and evil.
"I will return then. You may leave like the good errand boy you are." Marax/Miso said his tail keeping me close and somewhat comforted. I nuzzled into his fur and held my breath trying to listen for the man's departing steps.
"Very well brother. I take my leave." I felt the chill in the air that even my 8 year old self could process. This man was no good.
Miso kept watch the man leave, until he was out of sight. His tail loosened around me as he turned and placed his nose against my forehead. "I'm sorry little fox, I must go home soon. So we wont be able to play in the forest anymore. I am needed back home. I am also sorry I didnt tell you I could speak I just wanted to be by your side as long as I could." His hazel eyes in conflict and sorrow were gazing at me.
I could tell Miso was truly sad I placed my tiny arms around him to hug him. "It's okay Miso you have your-" The sharp pain instantly stopped all of my thoughts and body. "Aaaa!" I screamed and I felt Miso's giant teeth snapped towards me but not at me.
"Beluxis what are you doing!" He screamed out as Miso suddenly was no longer beast but Man. His hands were rough to the touch but soft as he tried to look at the wound.
My body felt on fire and cold at the same time, there was so much pain that I gasped for breath. I opened my eyes as much as I could to look at Miso but I couldn't see clearly. "Mi..miso.." I said.
"Shhh, little fox it will be okay. You will be fine." I felt something wet and sticky seeping through my shirt and all I could think of was the horrid beating I would get when I got home.
"I'm...scared" I said in labored breaths. When I felt his gentle lips on my forehead and the last words I could hear before my body drifted to the void.
"I will protect you forever my little fox."
