Chapter 11 - Alex The Town Guard

The main character gains a nominal role in the town guard. You now have minor influence over the town and have access to minor special privileges.

Main Character gains +1 Money sense. You can differentiate good and bad financial decisions based on intuition.

You take some time in the morning to wash up. You had spent the whole night mulling over the decision that was offered to you by Alex. You agreed to work as a field hand because you believed that it would be the best way to repay your saviour, Minerva.

As you contemplate the decision, you look around and see that although Minerva was a highly sought after herbalist and often went out on jobs to procure materials for such alchemy, she still struggled to support you. She had after all, only managed so well when she was living alone, but now she was supporting another person in the house.

Eventually, you decide that being a field hand would take far too long to repay her and decide to take your chances with Alex the town guard.

You leave the humble house and head over to the entrance of town where you see Alex going about his usual routine.

"Good Morning Alex, I am willing to join the town guard," You say confidently.

Alex glances at you, nods, and finishes up his conversation with a merchant passing into town. You notice that the merchant is passing money to Alex.

Alex then says something to his partner buy you're unable to overhear what he says before coming over to you.

"Hey, so you want to become a town guard? I'm sorry but that wasn't the offer I had in mind for you. You see, I require an assistant to help manage and take care of the town guard's establishment." Alex follows up.

He continues to give you a brief rundown of everything that will be expected of you should you join the town guard. The job is as follows, you are expected to learn how to deal with numbers and money, you are to procure equipment and armor for the tow guard with the taxes that the town council provides. Alex explains that he has been doing the job all this while for the town guard due to the lack of learned individuals who join the watch.

You figure out that the majority of those who graduate from school go on to become part of the council or take up other jobs that require greater management and knowledge.

"You will be paid a lower salary at the start so that if you aren't able to cut, we can fire you without as many losses, but if you learn well and become a central part of the town guard, imagine your value." He sells you on joining them.

You get a weird sensation informing you that you would lose out slightly in this decision but you had already made up your mind. Besides, the lower salary offered was still higher and less taxing than working as a fieldhand.

You agree and Alex asks that you start right now. The first order of business was to see a man named Bastor in the Barracks.

You also learn from your conversation with Alex after agreeing that the town guard consists of a few components.

There was the people's army, consisting of volunteer soldiers who would work other jobs on regular occasions but would be activated in times of need.

Then there was the town guard as you were familiar with, these people were paid to do the daily tasks needed to protect the people of the town. Their tasks were usually to patrol the surrounding area, hunt troublesome creatures and maintain public order and safety. The Scouts, The Hunters, and The Shield respectively.

As you head into the barracks, you look for the man named Bastor, the general description given to you was that he would be the only man in the barracks who was not in his armor so it was too hard to spot him.

Balding at the top and cheeks that wobbled as he talked, you approach and explain to Bastor that Alex had hired you to assist him. He agrees to check with Alex later but will teach you first.

Bastor walks up to a bookshelf and brings down a thick leather-bound book and was about to explain your task when he froze in place.

"Room Salute!" He shouts in a fluster as you watch everyone scatter to their feet and put their hands in front of their chest.

"Everyone at ease," a commanding voice sounds out. Turning, you see a grey hair, bearded man in plate armor. He looks at you with a piercing gaze and calls Bastor over.

After a moment's conversation, Bastor comes back and shouts, "Room at ease."

He then informs you that the commander of the town guard is in a need of someone to assist him in an upcoming creature hunt, he was just about to task some men to help him locate some assistants when he saw you.

"What do you say," Bastor asks.

Become a Knight's Squire (Chapter 22) or Stay with the town guard (Chapter 23).
