File 5: The Poisoned Man, a Code and a Diary

"Today is going to be a great day! No cases, no trouble..." Detective Mouri Kogorou yawns to the daylight, shining through the counter of the Beika Street Station.

"Yeah, what a beautiful day." Ran smiles at the sunny day with gleaming eyes, "Right, Conan-kun?" "H-Hai...(Y-Yes...)" Conan, in a daze, answers it with a hassle. "We are so lucky that there is no rain today. If there is, we wouldn't be able to go to the new outdoor art festival! Let's see... It is two stops from ours, and the train will be here soon." Then the group heard loud chatting coming not far away from the station. "Hakase! (Professor!)" Ran exclaims, "What brings you here?" "Ah, the kids won a quiz of mine, and I promised them to go to the art festival, so..." "You're going to the art festival as well? What a coincidence!"

"Art is marvellous, isn't it?"

"E-Eh?! When are you here?" Conan's heart skips a beat. "Katsuki, stop scaring Conan... Sorry, really..." Chiharu sighs. "I was here all along, he's the one not paying attention," Katsuki says with a hint of unfairness. "Now you sound like a kid." Chiharu says, "I say we follow the others to go to the festival. I heard they have some great pieces!"

"Baka! (Idiot!) You are late on the appointment again! I don't know why I haven't fired you yet, Gorai." From afar comes a voice. A neat man walks towards the stop with another person behind. "I am really sorry, Mafushi-san! I didn't mean to be late..." "Hey, Yamato, don't be so upset with Gorai here, he has some family issues-" "You shut up, too, Fufu!" The woman beside the man, who appears to be Yamato Mafushi, glares at him with a disgusting look. "Anyways, Yamato-san, the train will be here sooner or later." says the man beside the person named Gorai. "Uchi-kun, don't be upset, Mafushi-san is just drunk right now today. Things had not been in his favour." "Thanks, Itachi. And also, sir, you have dust on your shoulder." Gorai says and comes to dust off the shoulder. The old man detective mutters to himself, "They sure got a problem between this group." Then they heard the tracks. The train has come.

"Well, sir, please take a seat." Gorai Uchi says to Yamato. The group takes the seats near the door, while the family sits in the place near the window. The other kids sit beside the old man and Ran. Yamato starts to snore, his handkerchief falls to the floor. "Oh, I will get the handkerchief." Gorai sighs as he picks it up and puts it into the drunk man's hands. Chiharu gives a suspicious look, so did Conan. Two stops are quick since it is Saturday. Yamato is well asleep. "Um, wake up, sir. This is the stop." Gorai shakes Yamato's shoulder gently. "Oi, Yamato!" Fufu shakes Yamato vigorously, only to see the dead corpse fall down to the ground like a potato sack.

Fufu yelps, and then screams. The police came shortly after the incident.

"The victim is Yamato Mafushi, 56 years old. He is an explorer and an owner of an organisation for explorers and journalists. The cause of death is poison." Takagi says, "The main suspects are Fufu Kaliyoki, Itachi Tashirama and Gorai Uchi, and their alibis are confirmed by..." "Mouri Kogoro it is!" The old man walks towards Inspector Megure. "You again, huh. Every time when you are here, there will always be a dead corpse." "Hehe..." Detective Mouri says awkwardly. "This is frustrating. Everyone's alibi is sound." Inspector Megure sighs.

"Ah le le?" Conan exaggerates his founding, "There is a tiny hole on the finger!" Chiharu smirks, so that is how it is, what a simple plot, she thought. She starts to search for a needle on the ground, while the little argument of the old man and the tiny detective begin. "Found it." She mutters to herself as she picks the tiny, thin needle up with a handkerchief. She makes a mischievous smile. Evidence, check.

"What does the victim have with him?" The inspector asks the forensics team. "A computer, a phone, a handkerchief and a diary." A person from the forensics answers. "Does Yamato-san always carries the diary?" the inspector askes. "Hai. (Yes.) He always says that it is his private writing and only Gorai-san can see it." Itachi answers. "Let me see the diary." Inspector Megure requests and a person from the forensics group gives the book to him.

"Um...I don't get this. The diary is full of... Vs, Xs and Is, with commas and periods." Vs and Is, uh, Chiharu thought, putting roman numerals into a diary for others to decipher. This just keeps on getting interesting. "The last date he wrote was yesterday." The old detective says it with a sigh, "Maybe it's a code?"

"Takagi-keigu." Chiharu walks to the young police officer, "Does Yamato-san speak English?" "Yeah, he travels across the world, so he has to learn some English." That makes more sense, Chiharu thought, I figured it all out, the culprit is amongst the three people, and by looking at the diary, we should know the name.

"Inspector Megure," Chiharu smiles as innocent as possible, "Can I have a look at the diary, please? I might be able to decipher the code." "You do? Don't do anything silly with the diary. It is a piece of evidence." "Hai! (Yes, sir!)" She takes the diary carefully and starts to look at the last entry. "XXIII VIII V XIX, the II of V XXI XIIX XV XVI V joins with the I III of III VIII IX XIX I, everyone shall know the XX XVIII XXI XX VIII." If you spell out the Roman numerals with English letters, it would be, "When the second letter of Europe joins with the first three of China, everyone shall know the truth." U-C-H-I. Gorai Uchi, everyone will know the truth. About your deed, Chiharu thought and smiles, looking at the other entries. Some words say, "Drug dealing" and "Debt", also some phrases like "Not giving money to the employees" and "Unfair groans of the others are just so irritating."

"Inspector-san, here." She gives the diary back to the inspector, with a piece of paper under it. The inspector looks at the piece of paper, then looks at Chiharu. Chiharu smiles innocently. "I know how to solve the case." the paper says, "Please listen to me." "Fine, I will listen." He stares at the kid interestingly.

"First, the culprit hides a thin needle with poison on the floor." The glasses girl starts her deduction, "And this guy uses a fish line through the handkerchief with that needle, and throws the needle to the floor. The fish line goes through the needle, so then when the culprit purposefully pulls the fish line, the handkerchief will fall on to the needle, and when the culprit picks up the 'accidentally fallen' Yamato-san's handkerchief, the culprit will put it on the hands of the victim and stab the poisonous needle on the finger. That will probably work out. The culprit is Gorai Uchi, as he is the one who weirdly puts the handkerchief like that. I found the needle, and if the forensics can check on the needle, it might still have blood and remaining poison."

"Well, that works." Inspector Megure says, "What about the diary?" "Oh, the diary." Chiharu says, "The diary was about the crimes they have committed together, and the code was written in Roman numerals, translated into English. It says the confession of illegal drug dealing and some other sorts of crime."

"Kudo-kun, did you figure it out?" Haibara whispers to Conan. "No, not yet. I only knew that he was poisoned through the needle." "The case is solved! Gorai Uchi-san, you are under arrest for illegal drugs and murder." Inspector says with confidence. "What?!" Conan exclaims. "Thanks to Chiharu-chan, actually." The inspector continues. She had already solved it? Conan gasps, she is fast and correct! She is a sharp detective, indeed. Case closed.

After the case, Conan got closer to Chiharu, and they turn into friends and fellow detective. "How did you solve the mystery?" Conan asks, on the way to Professor Agasa's house. "Oh, the diary. And also the needle and the handkerchief. There is a hole it, and the inspector says the needle has poison on it. I didn't say one thing that is in the diary, though." "What is it?" "I think he is related to some organisation because he keeps on referring to 'them', or 'they', and also 'ravens'. I think it is the same organisation the letters were written." Blood drains from Conan's face, so did Haibara. "What's up, guys?" Chiharu says, clearly confused. "Oh, it's nothing you need to know," Haibara concludes the conversation and moves on.

Chiharu, remain silent, walks up to Katsuki with a suspicious look.

Meanwhile: Kyoto

"Holmes-san, did you see the news?" Aoi Mashiro asks Yagashira Kiyotaka, an apprentice appraisal in an antique shop on Teramachi Sanjo. "Oh, you mean the huge scandal of the letter that was sent? I heard that detectives are working on who is the mysterious writer of that message." Just then, a letter arrives at the shop, an invitation to a museum of grand antiques. "Care to come with me?" Yagashira asks. "Sure! I'd like to see some antiques, it has been so long." Aoi cheerfully agreed.

Here is the rule: I might say something on every 5 files. Things like that happens because I am excited. Please forgive my lateness, because this website was fighting my computer for a long time.

Next chapter is about Silicon Murder. I might finish it. There are no guarantees in schoolwork.
