chapter 4 Runaway

"Do you think Alex will report us? Vanessa said worryingly. "I don't know, it's possible he didn't chase after us though. Look don't get the wrong idea about me and him were not close. I continued on as we walked. I am curious how you ended up here though? "That's an easy one, I was here when they started setting up the walls, actually they had been doing it for a few years but no one really knew why. Then Before we knew it power was shut off, and soldiers came through like they owned the place. "What happened next? I asked. The government confiscated all weapons, all food, anything of value and kicked us out of our homes forcing us to get new I.D's. They Started to control us then some people just started eating each other, my friend she was killed by those things. I found the best way to survive join the military and find out what's going on. I was at home doing nothing like I usually do on my birthday, Alex called he complained at me for quitting my job. Then he said he had something for me and hung up. A bit later My mom came home drunk like always, broken glass all over the floor. There was this bite mark on her arm deep enough to be a dog's, after patching it up I went to bed. Woke up later to find Alex covered in blood. I rushed to go wake my mom and there she was just standing there lifeless, I couldn't keep her off me so I yelled for Alex. Before I knew it I had killed her. "She was no longer your mom, Oscar its not your fault. Tears began rolling down my face with anger flooding in. I know that. Dammit, but she was all I had. "Why don't you consider Alex your friend? Vanessa was eager to change the subject. I took a deep breath. "Friends are a waste of time and effort, I never asked him to be my friend. "Am I your friend? It wasn't long before we finished walking through an alley to this guarded building, but neither of us spoke the rest of the way. I watched as she approached the guards and then slowly crept behind them, I fumbled with the key and was relieved it opened the door. I opened the door slowly turning my gaze towards the file cabinet. Shuffling through each folder. I came across one labeled orders and another labeled project Z. They seem important, time to go before I get spotted. "I'll proceed just as you've asked but you owe me goodbye.

I passed back through where Vanessa was and waited by the alley. "Well did you find anything? "You didn't tell me he was inside I barely got anything, He was talking on the phone with someone, mentioned something about test subjects and I found these two files. "Their orders and Project Z what do you think that's about? Vanessa questioned. "Didn't have time to look, you tell me. Let's get back to your place. I added. "I don't have one remember, I stay in the barracks now. "Then we'll go to my car. The trip back felt shorter and the silence was beginning to feel uncomfortable, eventually we made it back. I turned the key over as the engine roared to life, squealing my tires I backed out heading to the gate. In my mirror I saw men aiming their weapons. They arent going to shoot are they? I shouted. "For our sakes I hope not, Alex said. doing a complete 180 I turned now facing the gates exit as they started to close even more. "Hurry! Vanessa shouted.
