A Newborn Companion

"Crack!*

The egg hatched and a four winged chick came out looking confused at the wide eyed human in front of it. Hungry, it started chirping and eating on the eggshells it came out from. Ace who didn't know what to feed it gave his food only to see the chick swallow it in one gulp.

Surprised, Ace went to bring more food back from the store only to see the chick swallow the food one after another. After what seemed like a day worth of food was gone, did it start to slow down and finally falling asleep in his arms.

"I'm gonna call you Ryze from now on" Ace declared while stroking the little head. As if agreeing, the little chick snuggled into his body and purrs.

It had been a year since the incident and every morning before sunrise and night before sunset, he would go out to hunt for fruits and small monsters to feed himself and Ryze.

One day, he saw that Ryze could glide among the branches and fly back up to the treehouse. Seeing Ace back, it gave a soft call as it glide and landed on his shoulders rubbing its body against his face showing affection. "Go hunt your own food Ryze, you are too big for me to feed already" Ace whined, Ryze looked at him wide eyed and drooped its head down looking sad.

"Lil punk trying to be funny with me huh" as Ace playfully pat his head while bring out a large piece of meat almost as big as Ryze from his hunting bag. Ryze took it into his mouth and flew up eating the meat in a few minutes then giving a delightful call as it went inside.

Reaching the house, he found Ryze already sleeping sprawled like a dead bird at the corner taking up half of the space in the house. Ace shook his head as he laid down beside it falling asleep.

*ScrEEEEEECH* Ace was awoken by a high pitch screech as looked around to see the treehouse being burned and smoke coming into the house, Ryze was crouching beside him shaking in fear. Without thinking, he immediately hugged Ryze and jumped out of the window behind where the fire had not spread.

"There he is, that little shit took my meat!" Yelled a fat man carrying a huge chopper. 'Damn, how did he know about where I stayed? He followed me all the way?' Ace thought to himself.

Before he could think of an answer, he realised he was going to be surrounded. Picking up a branch, he hid Ryze inside a tree hole far away that he had used for food storage.

"Scree" Ryze softly called to Ace, "keep quiet, and wait till I'm gone. Whatever happens stay here, eat until the food is finished before going out ok?" Ace sternly told it. "Ouch!" Ryze pecked on his finger, blood oozing out.

'T..ta..take care m..mas..master! B..be..be careful', Ace suddenly heard a voice in his head, shock seen over his face. "I will" Ace said patting its head as tears welled up in his eyes.

"Here boys, bet you can't catch me!" Ace yelled to his pursuers as he was running away.

'Please be safe' a lingering thought came to him as he ran.
