"Is there a reason you deliberately annoyed that elf yesterday?" Vorbuk asked while they were walking along the street the following morning.
"Oh, come on, don't you tell me you couldn't feel that the guy was totally off. The whole time he was with us he kept prying about things... Not to mention he kept acting as though he was gauging your combat capability when he thought I wasn't looking." Leo raised a finger in the air as he spoke trying to make himself sound even more like a detective.
The site of the prince trying to make himself look like that made Vorbuk want to laugh at the site. Since he was a wolf and couldn't laugh like a human could it came off like a scoff mixed with a sneeze. The action almost looked like he was mocking Leo, but the prince didn't care and acted as if he had not even seen it.
As they walked around the town they easily caught wind of the chatter going around about a man that had been found dead in the morning by someones house in an alley. The coincidence of the situation instantly gave Leo the questioning opinion on whether or not Vulen was behind it. The timing was too perfect for it to be completely random when he had followed them to town and suddenly a body shows up the next day. The two of them exchanged looks with the obvious agreement on their faces that they both assumed the same thing.
"I knew I annoyed him, but I didn't think he's just kill some random person..." Leo sighed with self guilt at the situation.
"it wasn't your fault! He was clearly a loose canon waiting to fire!" the wolf declared in attempt to ease Leo's guilt.
"Maybe..."
"Moving on! What is our next thing to do from here. I know you want to go to the palace, but are we going to hail another merchant cart from town?" Vorbuk wanted to changed the topic and get down to business.
"Well obviously that would be the easiest thing to do. We should go check-"
Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of a siren.
"What is that?" the wolf asked because he had never heard a siren in any of the past towns they had been to so far.
The siren was loud and almost deafening to the ear. It would only sound for a moment before fading away only to return once again just the same as before. The siren sounded a total of seven times before it finally depleted for good from the air.
"Cadirade's siren? But why?" Leo had a whitened expression on his face.
The look on Leo's face was ghostly pale. The very sight of it was obvious that some serious meaning was behind the siren that had just sounded throughout the kingdom of Cadirade. Vorbuk wanted to ask what was wrong, but the look on Leo's frozen face was enough to make him paranoid to even attempt to mention the meaning. Pondering over the idea he thought it was best to leave it alone.
Leaving the meaning alone was something that was not going to happen, however. One moment Leo was pale as a ghost and the next moment his body had swiftly shifted to run up and down the street. Vorbuk could hear Leo pacing himself to ask every single person on the street why the siren had been set off. None of the locals new exactly why the siren was sounded and went off, but everyone seemed aware of what it meant.
Why is he acting so stricken with fear? The wolf tilted his head as he watched the crown prince running all over the place like a chicken with his head cut off. It was a rare and uneasy thing to witness. How often does someone see a Crown Prince running all over with a pale expression desperately trying to figure out what is wrong from every single person he could possibly grasp and question.
"Leo! Calm down!" Vorbuk dashed over to Leo's side and used his teeth to grab the black cloak the prince was always wearing to try and stop his movements.
Leo did not reply he simply looked back at the wolf with a broken look in his eyes.
"What's wrong with you?" The wolf's eyes glistened with worry for the young prince.
"Don't you realize what that was?! That was Cadirade's Siren!" Leo brokenly shouted at the wolf as he forced his cloak out of the wolf's mouth. He couldn't stop his voice from cracking with fear.
"Need I remind you I don't know what the siren means! Why don't you calm down and explain it to me?" Vorbuk scoffed at his own failure at knowledge in this world. There was still much he was learning. He had never experienced the siren before so of course he had no knowledge of the history behind such a siren.
"Every town and city in Cadirade only sets the siren off when something specific happens..." Crown Prince Leo felt his heart break as he found it hard to speak of the meaning of Cadirade's Siren. The only thing on his mind was the sudden desire and urge and rush into the palace when they reached the city.
"Alright? What happens to raise such a siren? You can't just leave it off like that I'll still have no idea what you're talking about!" Vorbuk shook his head.
Little did the wolf know that the prince's next words from his mouth would leave even himself without an idea on how to help the prince.
"They kingdom only sets off the siren when a royal family member is assassinated..."
Leo's mind was stricken with grief while at the same time a desperation to know who it was that was assassinated and why. The palace was suppose to be the safest place in the whole kingdom and one of his family members was now validated as dead? Did one of his family members leave the palace? or did the palace have a hidden traitor? He had so many questions that his mind felt shattered.
His only thought on his mind was simple.
"I must get home to father!" Leo declared.
The wolf was merely silent as he gazed at the determination in the prince's eyes that were gazing right back down at him. Fire was lit in those eyes of his that made even the wolf shudder for a moment before questioning what that feeling was that his soul felt for a split second.
