It was Matt.
"What's this?" He hurriedly walked towards the two and in an instant, landed a punch on Ed's left cheek. That punch made Ed momentarily lose his footing and fell to his knees. Uncontented and in a feat of rage, Matt scooped him up and about to land his another punch at him when Aileen placed herself in between them.
"Stop! Please!" she said, crying.
"How could you Ed? I thought you were my friend? asks Matt, fury still evident in his face.
"Ha! Look who's talking? I thought you were my friend? But look at what you did!" Ed said, standing up while brushing the tinge of blood from his now swollen lips caused by Matt's punch earlier. "I told you to take care of her while I'm gone, not take her away from me," he spit some blood, "and now you're talking like I'm the one who broke my own words?"
"I tried Ed, for Pete's sake, I tried...but I just can't stop loving her. And you can't do anything about it!"
"Well, if that's the case, " said Ed as he pulled up a gun from his back, "maybe this could do something," aiming the gun directly at Matt.
"What are you doing with that gun?" Aileen asked, panic creeping to her body at the sight of the gun. "Put it down Ed!"
"No Aileen! If I can't have you, then I'm better off dead!" Then looking at Matt he said, "Too bad we loved the same girl, we're almost like twins you know!"
"No man! Don't do it!" That's all Matt was able to say.
Ed placed the gun's barrel directly aimed at his temple, and closed his eyes.
Ed suddenly felt the time suddenly stopped, and flashes of memories came flooding to his mind. He suddenly remembers himself always looking at the mirror beside his seat near the door at the front seat, looking at the glimpse of Aileen at the back. Aileen's warmth in his hand when he lifted her unconscious body and brought her to the school clinic after the Bball's accident. Her gentle and cute smile whenever they're talking. Every memory comes and goes in his mind's eyes, until that last precious moment with her at the beach behind the hotel they're currently staying at.
I should have stayed. I should have been the one courting her. I should have been the one she's gonna marry tomorrow.
He can feel the coldness of the barrel on his temple. His blood is now rushing to his head as he fights the urge to throw away the gun.
He started applying the pressure on the gun's trigger. This would end all the pain you're feeling right now, Ed. Let it be! Let it be!
Seconds later, a gunfire echoed through the basement…
