The Fiancé

The mall was almost empty at the time, except for a few socialite girls doing what socialites do. You know, shopping. Lena had five bags already on her arms, but she didn't stand out. All her friends also were carrying just as much, if not more.

She looked around the store and saw a nice suit. She immediately ran up to it to look. Her friends came running after her. "Everyone," she said, looking excited, "look at this suit; isn't it perfect. I just love the red tie."

Her friends all agreed. It was stunning. And the red tie was not everything good about it, everything about it complimented itself.

"I'm going to buy it!" She declared, happily thinking about the expression her fiancé might have when he saw it. One of her friends said, "that would look good on your fiancé."

Lena smiled when she heard this. Then another friend spoke, "I know, right? But Lena's fiancé looks good in everything." The others nodded. They all knew it was true. Her fiancé was the most handsome man ever. His name was James, and he was the richest man in Country S.

After packing up the suit, Lena left the store, telling her friends that they should meet again soon, and hurried to James' house. As she reached the door, she looked around at all her bags, making sure she didn't leave anything behind. After making sure she had everything, she knocked on the door, and texted James to tell him that she was there.

It was not James who opened the door; it was the butler, as always. "Greetings, miss," the butler said, not looking her in the eye. Lena just walked right in, ignoring the butler. This was how it always went at his house. Lena walked in, and saw James sitting on the couch.

"James!" She said as a bright smile appeared on her face. She walked over to him quickly, almost hopping in her step from excitement. "I was just at the mall with my friends, and I bought-" "Wait!" James said, placing his open hand between them, blocking right in front of her face.

"What is it James?" Lena said, almost crying. Her eyes had already become moist with unshed tears.

"I have something important to talk to you about." She cheered up when she heard this. It can't possibly be something bad, right? "What do you need to tell me?"

James looked Lena directly in the eyes, and said, "I'm sorry, and this is going to make you really upset, but..."

Lena became a little worried, and her eyes became moist again. "But...?"

James took a step away from Lena, and turned his head away, now afraid to look her in the eyes. At last he said the dreaded words:

"Let's break off our engagement."
