‘Life’ and ‘Death’

"Yael, are you sure that Light Yagami is 'Kira'?" Raye Penber asked the Angel floating above him in disbelief. How did she come to this conclusion?

Yael, eating a grape, while dressed in all white, with divine and holy aura surrounding her, answered, "Well it's obvious. Unlike you, I can see things you cannot. Light, well I guess I should say, 'Kira' is being followed by a Shinigami. There can only be two reasons for that. Firstly, the Shinigami is about to end Kira's life, hence the reason it is following him. Secondly, is that the Shinigami is observing how a mortal uses the Death Note. it does not matter which one it is, ultimately, Light is very suspicious."

"But he is just a student! What would compel him to kill so many people?!" He was going to end his investigation of Light and report to L that nothing suspicious was detected. Yet, Yael drops a bomb on him. He had no reason to doubt Yael, as she has been extremely helpful in the time they have been together.

Yael had explained the rules of the 'Life Note' and even the 'Death Note' , making him surprised. From the abilities, Raye realizes that the Life Note is the counter for the Death Note.

Yael's explanation also shone a light on how Kira could kill so many people without being detected.

1: To heal someone, the user must write the individual's name inside the book and have an image of the person in mind.

2: To revive someone, the user must kill someone else an hour after said person has come to life to replace their place in death.

3: If the user is killed, the user can revive but will be forced into hell for breaking the rules of life and death upon dying a second time.

4: Users must never use their true name when using the Life Book, otherwise 'Death' will claim you.

Though to Raye, Yael is very arrogant but he could see why. Not only is she a divine being, she is a servant of God.

"Does being a student stop one from committing murder? You had the answer in your hand. All the clues point to Light being Kira. Just like L said, do you not find it odd that just as you humans come to the conclusion that Kira is a student, his method of killing changes? That is as if the killer is trying to change that assumption to protect themselves. However this begs the question, how does the killer know this information? It can only mean that the killer is working within the Task Force or has access to your information. I can go into more reasons as to why Light has to be Kira, but that would be boring. You have the Life Note, so why not use it to discover the reason yourself?"

Raye ponders while holding the Life Note. He did not know why he felt unease with such power in his hands. He could save anyone he wanted, he could become the 'Savior' the world needs, but this book is too heavy. If he caves into his desires, would he be different from Kira?

Sighing, Raye hid the book and stood outside Light's house, observing him. With the idea that Light could be Kira, Raye found that he felt danger of death and was scared. He could not but think, what if Light knew his name?

Thinking of this, Raye looked at Yael who was floating above him, scrolling through his phone, while eating snacks. He does not know where she get these food from, other than pulling it from thin air.

Sensing something, Yael put the phone away and glanced at Raye, "What is the matter?"

"I just realize that if Light has access to classified information, does that not mean my life is in danger?"

"Oh, do not worry about that. I have altered all information about you. Your birth certificate has the name 'Matt Haunt'. Unless you introduce yourself as 'Raye Penber', no one will know. Even if the FBI agents mention your name, and Kira writes it down, the picture on the file is not you, so you will not die."

Raye was shocked. Just when did she do it? Not only has she breach government security, she has even altered information? Just when? Did this happen when I picked up the Life Note? If we have this kind of skill, Kira could be caught within days, no matter how cautious he is!

Just as Yael was about to say something, she looked in a direction with a startled expression and disappeared.

Raye was surprised but did not think much of it. Yael has constantly broken his world view and has done things he could not understand.

Fishing for his ID, Raye was surprised to see that his name was replaced by 'Matt Haunt' without his knowledge.

"So it was when I touched the Life Book that this happened? Or did she create this?" Raye was impressed and boldly had his ID on his front pocket.

Now that he was reassured of his safety, he thought of his fiancé, Naomi Misora and became concerned.

I need to send her back home, it is not safe with Kira at large. Though Yael told me that Light is Kira, without proof, I cannot bring him in nor can I explain how he did his killings.

Raye did not want Naomi to be harmed as they had too much to lose. They had just decided to start a family and she had even given up her career for him. Though he could revive her, that does not mean he wants to. The risk to both of them was too much. He had pondered if he should give the book to her since she was far more intelligent than him, but in the end he decided against it. With her character, after learning the identity of Kira, she would pursue him relentlessly and put herself in danger. However, Raye knew he was scared he would not be able to see Yael again if he handed the book over, hence why he did not think to give it to L.

Arriving in the skies, Yael stood before a Shinigami, who was looking at her curiously, "Who are you? Why have you been observing us?"

She is so beautiful, but why am I not shy around her? Though it was ironic that I, a Shinigami, would be shy around human females. Ryuk did not know why this thought appeared in his mind.

Yael was kind of surprised. She thought she had been careful with her concealment spells but she was still discovered?

Even if Shinigamis are not real gods, they do possess something for Father God to be cautious of them. To break through the concealment spells of a level 80 Seraphim without being noticed is something even I cannot do. The threat they pose to Father God is within the acceptable range, though I should ascertain more information, to be sure.

"You can say I am the opposite of what you are. I am the Angel of Life, Yael. I just descended from Paradise, at the command of Father God."

Ryuk frowned slightly as he was becoming more and more confused. He has been alive for who knows how long and he has never heard of 'Paradise' or 'Father God'. Well 'God' is easy to understand but God does not exist. Apart from the Human World, the Shinigami Realm is all that exists. If there were more, they would not have been so bored, but now there is a 'Paradise' and a 'Father God'?

"I am Ryuk, a Shinigami from the Shinigami Realm." Although confused, Ryuk shook hands with Yael, feeling his hands burn upon contact.

Looking at his hands, Ryuk noticed his skin being melted before instantly healing.

She did not lie but why was I the only one to suffer injuries? As the opposite of the Angel of Life, should she not suffer as well?

"Sorry about that. We are polar opposites, so if we come in contact with one another, we will cause harm to each other." Yael apologized but was secretly relieved that her abilities could harm a Shinigami. According to the memories given by Father God, the Shinigamis are not true gods of death but extraterrestrial beings that consume humans to live. As long as humans exist, they are immortal.

However, that begs a couple questions. From the memories bestowed by Father God, Yael understands that the Shinigami Realm have existed for a long time, even before humans, but how can that be? Does a Shinigami not survive on the life of humans? So how could they exist before humans?

Yael did not have any hatred or anger towards the Shinigamis but it does not hurt to know if she has to be passive or active if something comes up.

"It is fine, such things will not harm me. However, I am curious, you have spoke of God earlier, can you tell me who this is?"

Yale's face lit up with divine and holy light blooming in her presence, causing Ryuk to fly away. Though he could heal instantly, it does not mean he likes the feeling of his body evaporating.

Why does it seem that this Angel of Life has more power than a Shinigami or rather how can she use such powers?! Is it because she is a servant of God?

A Shinigam possessed a , , and but that's it. No matter how powerful, one's power will not reach the level of effecting the world by one's presence alone.

Could Momonga do that as a S ranked Shinigami? He was able to appear before mortals without his book being touched. Does that mean there is a difference between Shinigamis after all? If so, what of the Old Man? What can he do?!

"Father God is the Supreme One in the world, 'He' can create worlds, revive the dead, create life and have infinite power. Father God is all knowing, 'He' is above the concept of good and evil. The state of life and death are mere doors for 'Him' to open. Father God is everything!" The more Yael spoke, the more holy and pious the surrounding became.

The humans who happened to be walking below, were affected by her holy aura and knelt with reverence, as they felt the presence of God.

So God is equivalent to our Shnigami King? If that's the case, does Paradise look like a shit hole as well? I have a feeling I should not ask this question. However the thought of other extraordinary beings around, seems fun.

"Okay, so what is the reason that you descend? And why are you observing me?"

"I have dropped my Life Book in the Human World and is observing a human to see how he will use said power. Currently, I am following him as he observes Kira."

"My human is Kira, that's interesting!" Ryuk was surprised and could not help but laugh. What a small world indeed, even Angels of Life drop their books. He did not plan on telling Light this information, or maybe he should? How interesting.

Though it begs the question of what Angels of Life can do but he stops himself from asking. If he knew, it would spoil the fun.

And while he was cautious of Yael, he did not think she would harm him nor is there a reason to. If she attacked him, a war between Paradise and the Shinigami Realm would start, though he found that idea interesting, he did not want to see it, at least yet. He was already occupied by Light, if anything else happened, he would miss them as his time ironically is limited.

Thinking of something he discovered in the Human World, Ryuk chuckled and rubbed his hands like a gambler, "Yael, would you like to make a bet with me? Kira plans to use the Death Note to become the god of the New World. I will bet that he will accomplish his goals and your human will die! I will wager a 'Eye of Death'!"

Eye of Death? Father God seemed to want this but did not want to stand out, so He forgot about it. If I bring this to Him, will Father God be pleased?! Yael's heart beat with anticipation, causing her eyes to glow.

"My human plans on catching Kira, so I bet he will succeed. I will wager a branch of the Tree of Life."

Ryuk noticed Yael's expression and felt pleased, she was a fellow gambler. It seems even Angels were able to corrupt.

"What is the Tree of Life? I have never heard of it."

"The Tree of Life is a creation of Father God. It can create Fairies and elves. However, since I can not wager with it, I will bet with a fallen branch. The branch, if planted , can be grafted on, thus having a tree that can produce a large source of food. I have heard from Father God that the Shinigami Realm is barren."

Ryuk' eyes glowed with anticipation. If he can obtain the 'Brank of Life', he could see the Shinigami Realm becoming slightly better. Though he was more focused on the fact he could get apples, if he won.

Has 'God' been to the Shinigami Realm before? How else did he know that it is barren? There is also a possibility that God and the Shinigami King know each other. I should confront the Old Man and see what he knows. Why did he hide the Angel of Life and Paradise from us? Is that the reason why Shinigamis' cannot extend a human life? Because only the Angel of Life can? Are there any other beings out there?

"I have told my Human that Light is Kira, so you should probably tell him the abilities of the Life Note so this game can be fair. If Father God learns that I took advantage of you, He might punish me."

Yael began to explain the rules of the Life Note in detail, answering any questions that Ryuk had.

Ryuk was surprised about the powers of the Life Note and noticed it was just as Yael had said, she is indeed the opposite of the Shinigamis. However, Ryuk realized two things while talking to Yeal.

The first is that she kept introducing herself as the Angel of Life, not an Angel of Life, meaning she could be the only one of her kind or maybe she was arrogant? He scratched that idea since he did not detect arrogance from her.

Secondly, her powers were far above that of a Shinigami, which might be because she was the only Angel of Life.

Yael and Ryuk continue to speak and notice they have many things in common. Though they were from different realms, they decided to keep in contact.

Authors Note:

Hello, I hope everyone's day has been good so far. Anyway, I believe I have stated this before but this story was originally intended to be a one shot. I never thought of the story plot as a result, however considering many want to see this story continue, I have decided to continue writing it. To this end, since I want to stay true to the characters, the world and sense of realism in their respective worlds, I have decided to create a new storyline upon an idea I thought of in the past chapters. Many will not like this change or even question if there is a need but considering the Death Note universe is far too low for someone of Lord Momonga's caliber, I have no choice. If Lord Momonga is to be allowed to mingle in the story as I know many want to see, Death Note is not the option but a start. The reason Lord Momonga has not been doing a more active role is because I am playing on his cautiousness in dealing with unknowns, which is the Shinigami King and the unknown history he has discovered. If I force Lord Momonga into the story, the entire thing would collapse. He has the power of a nuke in a world made of paper, so that would not pan out well.

I read the comments and take each suggestion into consideration when writing, so please continue helping out in your own ways. Though I must say many of you are very intuitive, scaring me into developing the plot better to make you enjoy it. It's fun, especially when people appreciate and enjoy your work.

On a separate note, no pun intended, I am interested in seeing more Overlord base content on the site. I sure many have ideas but are scared to share them, but this is what this platform is for.

PS: Oblivion2991, I am a big fan, love your take on Overlord x Gate. Wonderfully written.
