Chapter 5

For the second time, I refused his offer to accompany him for tonight. I wasn't gonna be anyone's date for tonight. I was gonna be their maid but I knew that was just an excuse. I didn't want to get involved with something serious with them and the ball's theme for tonight was supposed to be a masquerade ball.

There was this tradition that went on for decades. That every 10th of October, the Palace would set an event, an event that everyone in the whole kingdom was free to attend as long as you have an invitation regardless of the social status. And in that event, there was a legend that when the clock strucks 12, the person you are dancing with was the person you'll be spending your whole life with and I didn't want to be any part of that.

Of course not many people know this because what noble ladies really wanted was to be their first dance. It was believed to be more rewarding to become the first dance because it meant how much you were important to them.

Not when I know I could disappear anytime. There was no proof that I had died in my world and that could meant I could go back anytime.

"Do you think I'd do well tonight" Damien asked making me flinch.

"I'm sure you are. Your fiancée will be with you." I assured him.

"But what if something goes wrong?" he asked.

He's annoying I tell you.

"I'll be there to cover up. Don't worry about it" I said as I try to dress him for tonight.

He was wearing a black tuxedo with a lot of golden bullshit that hang around on his coat or whatever that was and a black pants. His blonde hair was swept backwards with a few strands of hair purposely left on the front. I wanted to see his mask but he said he wanted it to be a surprise so I didn't bother.

When I was done changing him, I breath out a relief to see it was a masterpiece. Damien was that typical handsome man that had a gentle look on his face. On contrary, William had that naughty look but was still handsome nonetheless.

"Anyway I heard the news" he suddenly stated.

"About what?" I asked.

"Right. You wouldn't know him but His holiness Vincent is going to attend the ball" he announced.

"What's so special about him?" I asked curiously.

"Well, Vincent runs a church in the kingdom. The biggest one at that and he's the only one who can bend the rules or free from the rules since he had received 'God's blessing' so they say" he replied.

"God's blessing?" I asked.

"It means that he can see the deepest darkest part of your soul. He can tell whether your soul is pure or malicious. Rumors say that if your soul is pure enough, he can grant you any wish as long as his powers are capable enough" said Damien.

I sensed a glimpse of hope. If I get that Vincent's attention, he might know how I can get back home or perhaps, even send me back.

I can go home!

"What is your wish your highness?" I asked curiously.

"I haven't thought about it yet. You?" he asked.

"it's a secret" I smile.

After I was done, I head back to William's chamber to dress him up. He was acting strange this morning after I refused his offer. He was silent for the whole morning and he would occasionally glance at me. Even when I was accompanying him to the garden, he would stop and he looked like he wanted to say something but he didn't.

He was wearing the same design like Damien except, it was white. It suited him on how his long black hair hair stood out. It was way silkier than my own that it made me feel jealous.

"You'll be with us tonight?" William asked.

I nodded.

"Who are you bringing as your date?" I asked.

"I'd like to bring you but since you refused, I'm bringing no one to the ball" he said not sparing a single glance at me.

I look at him intensely before I stayed silent.

"Surely, you jest" I said before letting him wear his coat.

"It should be an honor to be my date" he argued.

"You may think my life is insignificant your highness, but a mere servant like me, attending the ball is a social suicide" I explained.

"Besides you shouldn't be bringing a servant to the ball. You should bring your fiancée" I suggested.

In the novel, William actually had a fiancée but he never liked her. She was the complete opposite of him. She was kind and timid and perhaps, weak.

"I broke off our engagement" he replied.

When I was finished, I left and went to take a bath. The two princes were already at the ballroom. I changed into a clean maid outfit and made myself at least presentable. I looked at the mirror and stared at my reflection for a minute.

I couldn't believe that this was me. That I looked much different than my original form. I sighed when I realize how much time had passed since I became their maid.

2 months had already passed since the accident. I felt my heart ache for a moment knowing that my parents are probably mourning for me.

When I was finished staring into space, I head my way to the ballroom only to see such a huge crowd at the center. They were dancing with their partners gracefully and their extravagant dresses showed that all of them made an effort for tonight's ball. William was having the time of his life dancing with his fiancée Ashlene, who was wearing a ballgown that matched with his. William on the other hand was surrounded by lots of women inviting him to dance. I could see they were enjoying so I stood at the corner of the buffet station.

When they met my eyes, they smiled and I simply gave them a polite nod. I couldn't help but envy the people around me with their dresses. As for me, I was in such a plain maid outfit. I didn't have the prevililege to enjoy anything because I was busy taking care of the two princes.

"Enjoying the party?" a voice said making me snap back to reality.
