Chapter 4: after class

The science teacher dismissed the class and everyone was packing up everything. Emily then stood next to Owen and watched him pack his backpack when she saw something stand out to her, the assignment for today. On the top right hand corner was his name "Owen Shores".

"Shores, huh? That's weird, you share the same last name as Miss Shores at this school," she said.

"Yeah, she is my mom. She always takes me to see her classroom on the first day of every school day before all the other students come, but this time...I'm one of them," Owen said.

"Wait...you are related to Martha Shores and you still do not know what blades are?!" Emily said in a confusing tone.

"Well I know of them. I just don't know what it is they do," Owen said.

"Well obviously you are a blade, because your mother is a blade," Emily said.

Owen stopped packing and turned to her. "What are you saying? That my mom is like one of them?" Owen asked in disbelief.

"You really thought you were a human didn't you. Why would you think you were human? Did your mom just not tell you?" She said.

"I don't believe you, my mom wouldn't just keep something like that a secret from me. We are really close," he said.

"Let me see your schedule, I'll show you," She said as she put out her hand, "Please!"

Owen finished packing his backpack and flung it over his left shoulder.

"We need to get to our second period," he said as he walked past Emily. As he was walking out the door he heard Emily say, "wait." Owen stopped and turned. "I'm sorry..." she said staring at him. She looked like she was about to cry.

Owen stood there and looked into her eyes. They were light blue, but had tears forming in her eyes. He then took a deep breath and walked up to her.

"No, you were okay... I was just overreacting... I'm sorry. Thanks for telling me, I appreciate it. But why would my mom hide this," he said. Owen then smiled.

"What happened to your tough girl act?" He asked her.

"I don't know why I am acting like this. I guess maybe you're..." she then trailed off as she looked at the ground.

"Look, I'm sorry. Do you think we can still be friends?" Owen said as he lifted up his hand for a handshake.

Then before he knew it Emily hugged him.
