Chapter 23: Ghosts

Gideon

She hasn't said a word since we got here. Even when I took her hand and led her to the elevator doors, she remained quiet. Micah follows behind me like a silent specter, which annoys me and confuses me at the same time.

"Look, Micah, Jade, and I need to talk privately. We'll talk tomorrow." Micah runs his gaze over Jade's solemn form before he turns back to me and says. "Fine, but I want to make sure she's okay before I leave."

I nod my head in agreement. Jade's face is pale, and her eyes are wide. Micah walks in behind us and looks around the room as if searching for something. "Where's your liquor cabinet?"

I point to a cabinet in the kitchen and squat down in front of Jade.

She remains silent in the face of my scrutiny. Micah hands me a glass. "It's whiskey. This should warm her up fast."

Giving him a grateful smile, I give the glass to Jade, who takes it and gives me a questioning look. "Jade, baby, drink it. It'll make you feel better."
