Chapter 14: The Arcane of the Unknown

Asher's 40'th Life:

Age: 13

World Kpovos:

City: Zelt.

Village; Norway.

I swung around, holding the blue fire sword up as high as I could, with my body being as weak as it was. The blade somehow cutting through the sword dummies head.

' Eeh? See, you still have it!' Lily says with so much pride that my achievement sounded more like her own, than mine.

"Still have what? An irritating, psychopathic, masochistic spirit? Yep still have that, considering the fact that there is this little voice in my head that keeps shouting and complaining that she can't commit murder." I say straightening out of my combat stance and fixing my dusty clothes.

"ASHER HAS LOST HER MIND! AND SHE CAN FIGHT!! FATHER! FATHER!" A scrambling sound followed by a loud thump and yelling broke the silence of the courtyard in the ruins of my old home. Twirling around with furrowed brows as I watched my cousin scramble through the dust and ash, he clambered on to his horse before riding off all the while screaming that I would kill everyone in the village. Are you serious? Just because I know how to fight he thinks I'll kill everyone, what kind of logic is this? Should I chase after him? Shaking my head I sheathed my sword.

"That'll just scare him even more." I grumbled out loud before bowing to the ruins, whistling softly I exited the crumbled remains of the ex- chieftains home. A pitch black horse galloped out from the woods bumping it's nose against my chest with such playfulness that people would automatically think it's harmless. I smile as I ran my fingers through its mane.

" Midnight,it's been a long time, hasn't it girl?" I ask her, Midnight had been born at exactly midnight during a lunar eclipse of all things, so I had named her after that hour. She gave a resounding snort, clawing at the dirt with her hooves.

I raised my hands, a guilty smile on my face.

" Yeah, yeah, sorry, okay? I'll use you more often when I'm traveling between the village and the ruins, unfortunately only during night times since running in the mornings wake me up better than the baker woman's tea ever could. Plus I'm asking for your assistance now, ain't I?" Midnight turned its head away, just as stubborn as my charge. I sigh rubbing the back of my head.

"Fine, I'll just have to walk home. All alone, through the treacherous terrain, the dangerous woods, where I could be robbed, and who knows what else, during this hour of the day?" I shrug taking a step in the direction of the village, something grabbed at my coat, I turned my head back slightly, trying not to grin at the sight of my horse bitting my coat to hold me back. "What?" I ask, folding my arms.

'You do realise that you are talking to a horse who may or may not understand you, right?' Lily asks incredulously. Rolling my eyes I scoffed mentally at her.

' All creatures are intelligent,in their own ways. Midnight happening to have at least a little bit of human intelligence.' I argue.

' Your reasoning sucks. There is absolutely-'

Midnight placed her head on my shoulder rubbing her cheeks against my own.

" I take it that you'd rather allow me a ride back?" I ask turning my head to look at my horse, patting her head. Midnight whined before nudging me. " Alright. I'll treat you to five lumps of sugar, what? Don't give me that dirty look, I have enough money to buy so much." I mounted Midnight and tapped her thighs, kicking out she took off at a sprint.

' See.' I know being smug about something this small isn't exactly right, but I'm happy my horse has something that other horses will never have.

'....Shove it.' Lily says sounding more cheerful than her words. The stars are brighter than usual, they glittered gently, the moon missing from its usual place in the sky. The lights in the near by villages must be off already, what a funny coincidence,it's midnight. Either that or something big is gonna happen. Frowning, I racked my brain to find my memories from 13. Nothing major apart from the wars starting. A flicker of yellow sparked through the leaves. Sitting up straighter I eyed my surroundings, we're close to the village....so maybe the villagers....did Alias actually scream his lungs out all the way here? Possible, that man, er, boy, has a set of lungs on him like no other. It wouldn't be surprising if he had kept on screaming like a girl all the way here, but was the image of me cutting a wooden person's neck off really that scary? When the trees made way to the village path and entrance, a circle of archers surrounded the wooden spires, meant to keep the possessed out. Torches created a sure path of light, with the blue light of the Hell fire bridge beyond the buildings of the village and the flickering yellow ones,it created an eerie feeling to the already high tension. Shit, just because someone ran their loud mouths I'm going to experience how it feels like to be pierced through with thousands of arrows. The villagers stood behind the spires, my cousin surrounded by a the healers. I schooled my expression of annoyance, it's okay Asher,it's not like you haven't died before. The Chieftan,my uncle stepped forward, his robed billowing behind him. I want so badly to tell him that his robe had caught fire in his attempt to look cool. The Chieftan made a face of disgust, sniffing and making weird gurgling sounds.

"FATHER!! YOUR CLOAK!" Ahem, you mean robes, idiot Alias.

"WHAT THE!" The man who's supposed to be the almighty ruler jumped around like a dancing chicken. The archers arms lowered, obviously this scene confused them, who could blame them? It's not everyday something as interesting as this happens. Agh! The tension defused just like that?! These people.....are actually trying not to laugh right now? If someone doesn't knock some brains in to their heads, along with loyalty and common sense, I swear I'm gonna do it myself. I cleared my throat when the fire was out out.

"Chieftan Soris, may I know the meaning of this? What had I done that deserves such a welcome?" I ask, raising my arm to gesture to the fanned out archers,my child like voice higher than I had meant for it to be. Soris,my uncle patted his robes and looked up trying to regain the dignified air he had had before his robes had caught fire.

" Asher Dawn, where had you learned to fight?" My uncle asks.

"Me? I thought myself considering the fact that I have to hunt in the woods and make sure that I return safely incase a Possessed had found me. Is it so wrong to want to protect yourself and survive,Uncle Soris?" I ask and the arches relaxed completely. Uncle Soris coughed apparently not having thought about that.

"Then you shall join the upcoming wars. Each village is required to send one fighter and since you can fight you should go." My uncle says. I pale in shock.
