On the bus ride home I'm approached by a hispanic girl that seems young enough to attend my school. She takes up a seat directly across from me on the other side of the bus. Looking down at her dark navy blue khaki pants I assume just that, and my suspicions are confirmed when she starts talking. As she draws closer she leans in almost uncomfortably close and asks"Was that you that was in that fight today".
"She sounds a little apprehensive like she's unsure of what she's asking, but that sentence sounded more like a statement than a question, if I had to take a guess I would be willing to bet that she's at least almost certain it was me, but she's just curious as to my side of the story or something" I think to myself. Taking a little bit longer than it should be necessary to respond to such a simple question I respond "no, what are you talking about"? I don't want anyone tying this event back to me so I lie. "You know the fight that happend today" she says. "No that wasn't me " I say back.
Giving up she slumps back into her seat and pulls out her phone. The rest of the ride was uneventful thankfully. I get off at my stop and walk to my house that is actually broken up into three parts as three different times for three different tenants. Unlocking the door and locking it behind me I walk straight to my room take off my bookbag and collapse on my bed.
The silence in the house tells me that nobody else is home or at least nobody is making noise. Laying my head on my pillow the tension that I was holding onto this whole day began to release. I briefly considered taking a nap for an hour or two but decided against it. I had work to do, and it was a Thursday night with assignments due on Friday. "I'll be able to rest better once I know these are done" I thought out loud.
I decide to switch into more comfortable sweatpants and start emptying my pockets. I pull out what appears to be a folded up envelope. I was confused because I had no idea why I had it in my pocket. Opening and unfolding it I pull out a piece of line paper and on it written in black marker were the words " Polly's Pie On Saturday 12 noon be there I'll pay for the pizza".
Unsure of what I'm supposed to do I tuck the paper into my bookbag. "When would this have even gotten slipped into my pocket" I think to myself. Reminiscing about all the events of the day I start sifting through my memories as to when someone could have possibly have had the opening do so in the first place. Suddenly it dawns on me.
The girl on the bus is the only person I can think of that had been close enough to slip anything in one of my pockets. I'm not sure though and am quite hesitant to say it was her who had slipped the envelope in my pocket. "If it was her then she was able to slip the paper in quite stealthily" I think. Unsure of what to do with the paper I slip the paper into my bookbag and decide to do my homework.
The next day
Walking to my bus stop after school I'm stopped when someone grabs me by the shoulder. I turn around and am met with a husky white guy who looks to be in his late thirties maybe early forties with a few days worth of stubble. "Hello " he says. "Hey" I respond unsure of what's going on. I'm here because you have an opportunity to make some money. I know you met with a scout yesterday. I have a little incentive for you" he reaches in his pocket and pulls 5 one hundred dollar bills out of his pocket "show up to polly's pie on Saturday and you'll get this no bullshit kid. My boss just wants to talk to you about making some money boxing you know some serious cash. Even if your not sure just come anyways kid you may not know if you'll like it unless you try it out."
His calm disarming personality only serves to make me more confused. Unsure of how to respond I say "I-I think you got the wrong person-" he interrupts " No we know exactly who you are Devin".
