The Banquet

The sun set and it was time for the banquet. Hung Dao, his father, and Ngu Lao met at the entrance. They all dressed relative to their position with Ngu Lao clothing being the simplest to Hung Dao's father being the most complex. Hung Dao and his father have their own palanquins while Ngu Lao rode a horse. Together with other guard soldiers, they went to the banquet.

When they were there, Hung Dao whispered to Ngu Lao,

"Once inside, don't speak until my approval. It is best for you."

"Yes my prince," Ngu Lao replied.

Hung Dao, noticed Ngu Lao changing his way of address, was pleased. The three walked inside. Ngu Lao was overwhelmed with how luxurious the scenery before his eyes were. A giant room covered with gold, huge columns made of rare wood that were sculpted into dragon shapes. At the end of the room, the throne could be seen, and to its left and right, tables full of food for officials extended to the front of the room. Many were there already and were seated at their assigned tables.

When Hung Dao and his father walked in, everyone stopped talking, and all eyes were on them. They started to walk to the king, Ngu Lao followed when he saw that.

"My king, sorry that I couldn't come earlier," Hung Dao's father said and kneeled, Hung Dao and Ngu Lao also kneeled.

"The banquet hasn't begun yet so don't think too much, and don't talk to me with such a distant brother," the king said with a smile.

"I do not dare to cross the line, your majesty."

"You are always stubborn when it comes to keeping traditions. Let's just sit down and enjoy,"

"Yes your majesty," Hung Dao's father replied and they went to their tables.

Since Ngu Lao is just a servant, he had to stand behind Hung Dao.

"Don't feel bad, I'll get you some food when no one looks," Hung Dao said.

"You are too kind my prince. Don't mind me. I am fine." Ngu Lao replied.

"The ambassador of Yuan has come," an announcement was made to get everyone's attention. The ambassador walked in with his trusted servant.

"My greeting to you, king of Dai Viet. And please forgive me for my arrogance when we first met," the ambassador bowed.

The king, surprised by this sudden change,

"I didn't even remember what happened that day. How was your stay? Is there anything uncomfortable?"

"Everything was well, and I was pleased with the experience in Dai Viet."

"That is good to hear. Then let's sit down and enjoy."

"Before that," the ambassador said. "Forgive me for my impoliteness. Even though there are two days left, have you got your answer yet."

The palace fell into silence, and suddenly the atmosphere changed.

"I simply can not agree with the Khan request," the king answered rigidly.

"The Khan will not be happy with that answer," the ambassador upset.

"That is why I have another way to resolve the tension."

"And that is?" the ambassador curiously asked.

"I heard that prince Toghan of your country is fond of my princess Thien Thanh. Do you think that is enough to calm the Khan?" the king expressed his opinion.
