Naruto stopped before entering Mistral. After checking his surroundings he removed his cloak and katana to store them in a seal on his forearm. He felt satisfied that at least people never saw his face and he could easily pass as a normal person.
He stood on a hill and gazed at the city that was built on the mountainous area. From afar the city looked extremely beautiful with hints of shrubbery everywhere and small waterfalls in some areas. He admitted in his mind that if he was a resident of this world than he would not mind living in such a beautiful city.
Strolling down the hill he encountered some travelers and hunters. Conversing with some people who did not show any negative emotions, he asked a few questions by telling them of a cover story that he was an orphan from a small settlement outside the kingdom.
Entering the city with his cover story was easy but he was taken directly to the registration office to register as a citizen of the Kingdom of Mistral. After putting all his information he was interviewed where he answered some questions regarding his family, occupation, aura, and semblance. He answered all the questions and said that he was a traditional blacksmith and part-time hunter but was taught everything by his god-father. The proof of his being a hunter was simply traversing the wilderness and reaching Mistral.
After everything was said and done, he was given a temporary license to work as a hunter for a year and if his record was good then he will receive a proper license.
'This is better than breaking in and hacking to enter myself in the system.' Naruto thought while leaving the building. 'People here are lax in their security but that might be because most fights between humans and faunus happen in Atlas and Vale.'
After his registration, he roamed around looking for places of interest like a clothing store, weapon shop, a publishing company, and inn to stay at. He asked around and bought some snacks on his way.
...
Entering the weapon shop, he saw a burly man reading a book behind the counter and the sides of the shop decorated with many different weapons. Walking up to him he cleared his throat and the man looked up at him. "Can I help you?"
Naruto brought out a book in which he took notes and searched for the drawing he made of his weapon. He presented it to the man and said, "I need your help in building this."
The man lazily looked at the amateurish blueprint of a chokutō with the length of a nodachi. The scabbard drawn on the side had notes regarding how to use it as a piece to deflect attacks. Furthermore, when the sword was sheathed it could transform into a sniper.
"What about sight and magazine?" He asked.
"That's the problem I don't know how to solve." Naruto shrugged helplessly.
"I can think of something about the magazine but the sight depends on you and how much money you can spend. If you have a good aim than I can build a sight that can pop up when you transform it into a sniper."
Naruto thought for a few seconds and agreed with the man, "Can you also make it as tough as possible?"
"Sure, The more you pay the better it will be."
In the end, Naruto paid for the best materials and technology to be used in his weapons. He did not have any intention of building a different weapon or changing it in the future. Even then he kept his emotion-sensing open to check if the man was lying since many people he asked had suggested this place, as well as the man was honest.
Next, he went to a publishing company that also operated in other kingdoms, for his novel. he had already written two out of three parts so he was already ahead of time.
After showing his book, and presenting his reasoning for writing; the editor who was also a faunus loved his book. A contract was signed where he will submit the last part of the book in two months.
On his way to the inn, he shopped for some better protective clothing and brought a white cloak since his black one was too recognizable. He bought a simple white shirt, a black vest to write some seals on and black pants. At first, he wanted to wear the protective vest from his village but there was nothing similar in Remnant.
He booked a room at a medium-sized inn and started studying fuinjutsu. His work ethic had improved quite a lot in the past few months, every time he stopped to rest at a place, he was constantly learning or training. It did not matter to him even if he was in the wild.
...
Naruto had an entire week to finish his preparation because his weapon would take a week to be finished. He studied fuinjutsu and often went to the library to look for things that can help him decode all the glyphs and writings he copied from different ancient sites. He also, wrote seals to reinforce his clothes and made them stronger.
The most important thing was that he found some of the culture of his world and his favorite food; Ramen. Every day at lunch he visited the ramen shop to eat a few bowls and remember his time back home even if the flavor was different from Ichiraku's ramen.
He wanted to see Haven academy and take a tour but only authorized people were allowed to enter. What he heard from the rumors was that the people of Mistral wanted Pyrrha Nikos to enter Haven but she chose Beacon academy.
Naruto thought it was pretty fair of her to choose Beacon academy since it was the most advanced school. The people there would be much stronger and she could improve more there than join Haven and fight the same people she had already fought in the tournaments.
...
Today, Naruto was preparing to the weapon shop for his sword. He got ready by wearing new clothes he bought and bandaged his hands with the bandage specially made for hand to hand fighters, leather gloves for extra protection. Next, he tied the weapon pouches to his thighs. One with ninja wire and other with throwing knives.
Entering the shop, he greeted the man. "Hello, is it done?"
"Of course it is!" the man laughed and brought out a sword from underneath the counter; presenting it to him, "Check it."
Naruto picked up the matte black sword with a black hilt and blue diamond patterns on it. He pulled the blade out and brandished it. After a few test swings, he nodded and sheathed it back.
"Now press the trigger on the side to use it as a sniper."
Following the instructions, two glass sights popped out from the sheath. Nothing much changed other than that.
Naruto was satisfied with the sword since the material wasn't too light and neither too heavy.
"You can use this baby in a way that you can load a single bullet but also attach a magazine." the blacksmith said and gave him five magazines.
"So kid? what are you going to name it?" the man asked.
"Yamato" the name suddenly popped in Naruto's head.
"A pretty heavy name if you ask me but the sword can definitely handle it."
After buying dust bullets and a belt to store everything, Naruto left for the port.
The airship was a marvel he had never imagined and sometimes he even wanted to steal some of the technology for his home but every time he reminded himself that these people have also built warships of much bigger sizes. What if someone from his world decided to fuck with others and build the same thing.
He had already lived through a war and never wanted to do it again. He just hooped that the same thing applied here and another war never happens.
...
The flight was quite comfortable, nothing like a normal sea ship that rocked due to waves. Naruto sat in a comfy chair and wrote the last book of his novel.
There was one time when the ship was attacked by some flying insect-like Grimm but they were easily handled by Atlas soldiers. Naruto noted that even if the Atlas was the most militarized kingdom there soldiers did not appear to be the most powerful. He rated them to be only used to do chores in the military.
.....
The first look of Atlas was so beautiful that Naruto forgot to breathe. It looked like a castle floating the sky, straight out of a fairy tale. The evening light reflected from the structure in such a way that it looked like it was made of crystals.
Naruto sighed in admiration. He could not believe that an entire city was kept floating in the sky with the use of technology and gravity dust. Slowly, the ship left Atlas behind and landed at Mantle port.
He decided to stay out of Atlas since the entire city was under military control and all his actions will be monitored by them. So, he chose Mantle as his location. Besides, he never intended to stay in either city. The main goal was always to go in the harsh environment outside to train and find some clues.
He saw that the living conditions of Mantle were way worse than he thought previously. 'The higher class of Atlas are not just oppressing Faunas, but humans too.' He thought, 'And this is not even the slums or poorer part of the city.' Naruto shook his head in sadness. He wanted to help these people by the look in his eyes but if he did anything then surely the kingdom will come after him and he also didn't have any power over the people.
'I can only help them by killing the Grimm that are out there in the icy wilderness.' He concluded as he made his way out of the city walls. At the gate was a giant hologram of missions from which he picked a dozen Grimm hunting missions and synchronized the location with his scroll. He had already stocked all the things he needed in Mistral so without waiting he left to explore the vast world outside the city.
On his way, he saw many military bases that were built mainly around Schnee mine and several times he was inspected and asked where he was going. It wasn't until naruto showed them his license and missions he picked up to make some money did they let him go forward.
'This General Ironwood person sure is paranoid.' Naruto wondered. 'Or there could be something happening that the general populous does not know about?'
Naruto ran different scenarios in his mind for the increased military activity but couldn't come up with a definite answer so he put them in the back of his mind when he reached the first Grimm nest. This was supposed to be a team mission but since his license stated that he was an independent hunter, the mission was approved. If he died then no one would be coming to pick up his dead body.
The location was an ice cave filled with Ursa major and an old Alpha. Naruto spied the cave from a distance first. Seeing that there was no activity outside the cave, he crept closer and adjusted his mind for the upcoming battle. He took a peek inside the cave to look for Grimm but there were none.
'Weird, most alphas are intelligent and they always have a few critters roaming outside.' He frowned but unsheathed his sword, his senses could not feel any negative energy of the Grimm right now but the information stated that the nest is here. After 15 minutes of walking inside, the cave went deeper into the ground. He used the smooth ice to slide down. Just as he landed two centinal popped out of the ground.
Instead of stopping, Naruto sped up and brandished his sword, in a smooth motion he sliced one. He spun and sliced the other with a flick. The worm-like grimm did not even have the chance to struggle before they turned into ashes.
The cave started rumbling and five Ursa surrounded him in the tight space. Naruto smirked and stepped forward. He appeared with his sword thrust into one Ursa's head. Without thinking he teleported in front of another and slashed with his sword, beheading one more.
It was a massacre. Naruto appeared and disappeared between the Ursa like a Phantom. As he went deeper, the cave got bigger and he faced six more groups, each larger than the previous one.
Finally, he reached the end. In a large area, a slightly bigger and heavily armored Ursa waited for him. It roared in anger, easily able to shake the walls with only its voice.
Naruto grinned in excitement and both charged towards each other. With a flick, he sent his sword in the air and jumped. He brought his hand out and aura started gathering around his hand until a rasengan formed. He teleported mid-jump onto its head and smashed the rasengan. It ground against the bone plating and Naruto applied pressure until it cracked. Another teleportation and Naruto appeared far away but the sword fell directly into the crack, impaling its head. The Grimm died so fast that it never had the chance to retaliate.
"Weird. How can there be so many grimm, so close to human territory just living in a cave? They aren't even doing what they usually do." Naruto was confused since most nests have Grimm roaming around on the outside. scouting the area.
"I will report it when I get back but first let's take some pictures for completion evidence.", with his scroll, he snapped photos of the cave and grabbed his sword on the way out.
....
This was how Naruto spent the next four months in the mountains, where a single mistake could end his life; he jumped directly in the mouth of danger. Besides, the deeper he went the more deadly Grimm started appearing that could survive the harsh weather. He completed his missions first and sent the pictures with his inquiry of weird behavior from the Grimm but he got no solid response other than the scientist still looking into it.
There were times he came across old abandoned settlements but there was no one living there for over a hundred years. Even the structures were brittle because of the harsh weather and no one would supply dust to the settlers so far out in the mountains.
Naruto found some ancient structures but he still did not have answers to his questions. It seemed as if someone went out and destroyed all the information regarding the people of the past. He felt like all his search was without any kind of results, after scouring a quarter of the world; he had more questions.
'Good thing I already sent the completion of all the missions before I went exploring or people might have thought that I died in the snow.'
Naruto hummed in thought on his way back to Mantle. His long stay in the mountains might not have given him many answers but he still progressed in using his semblance to control the elements of time and space to do different things. He also progressed in fuinjutsu because he never practicing when he rested but his supplies were running low and he had to go back to civilization.
Between him and Mantle was only a mountain, when he reached the top there was quite a lot of Military activity. Naruto in his curiosity walked closer to take a look only to find everyone looking at a single Goliath far away.
Naruto's eyes opened wide in surprise. "Goliath always travels in herds, how did this one separate?" Naruto, in his surprise, spoke out loud.
"A large storm passed through the area and this Goliath appeared during that. It's not allowing the military to do their rounds." A soldier who stood beside him answered his question.
"Thank you," Naruto replied with a nod and walked forward, the soldier behind him yelled to stop but he decided to ignore him. In front of everyone was a woman in totally different clothing than Atlas military but with the same color scheme.
'So, this is Winter Schnee.', Naruto observed the woman from under his hood. 'She's definitely in a high position. All the soldiers are standing behind her and respect her a lot.'
"So," He paused. "Does the military have a plan to fight it?" he asked, in hopes of receiving a straight answer this time.
Winter looked at the person completely covered in a white cloak with and raised one of her delicate eyebrows, "It depends on General Ironwood. The orders will be coming soon." She replied in a tone that Naruto had to stop himself from asking another question. The soldiers were not ready to fight a Goliath and from their looks and they seem to be waiting for a long time.
Naruto sighed loudly and pulled his hood down. Everyone around him turned and looked at him like he just committed a major sin but Naruto gave no thought to them. He detached the sword from the belt and held it by the sheath.
"What are you doing?" Winter half yelled and half asked.
"Getting ready to fight a Goliath." He grinned and jumped down while popping in a magazine full of various dust bullets.
"Wait!"
*bang*
He sniped the grimm while sliding down the snowy mountain. Without stopping he unloaded an entire magazine at a single spot on its head. This annoyed the Goliath and it stomped the ground hard. Cracks spread from its feet but naruto ignored it and jumped directly on its back.
*slash*
In a wide arc, his blade carved the Goliath's back but only managed to enrage it more. Naruto jumped down and started dancing around the Goliath with his sword. He made cuts on its legs and trunk while dodging each attack.
The grimm was so angry that it started roaring and smashing everything around it because Naruto was too fast for its huge body to deal with. Soon, its tusks were cut off and it slowed down from all the injuries.
Naruto stood almost fifty feet away from the Goliath, it stared at him with red eyes. It pointed its head at him and started running to ram him. Naruto also ran towards the Goliath but just before he collided with it, he slipped down and lodged his sword in its mouth and dragged it back with him. This cut the Goliath in half and it fell with a loud thud.
Naruto smiled to himself at a job well done. Although the grimm itself could only stomp and ram with it tusks; it still had a very heavy armor on its body and had quick movements despite its size. It was only because of his strength and speed that the sword managed to cut the monster in half.
Naruto was still in thoughts when a sword was suddenly thrust in his chest. He jumped back and was about to release his killing intent when he saw his attacker.
"What the hell is wrong with you woman?" He yelled at Winter.
"What is wrong with me? What is wrong with you? Do you have any idea what you just did and what could have happened if the Goliath decided to attack the city in anger?"
"Are you sick or something? I have killed enough grimm to know if I can take it on my own or not. You saw it yourself. I had no problem in dealing with one Goliath."
Winter glowered in anger but she couldn't refute his claim. She saw how easy it was for Naruto to take it down.
"How did you do it?" She asked haughtily.
"How did I do what?" Naruto was now sure that this girl had some screw loose.
"How did you kill it?"
Naruto slowly crept closer and touched her forehead to check, 'Maybe she caught a cold because of the weather. I mean, I only used my speed and strength to kill it'
She slapped his hand away and grabbed it tightly, "You are coming with me to Atlas. I'm not even sure if a person your age should be out here. Who allowed you out of the city?"
The soldiers watched in amazement as Winter dragged him back to her ship.
