The Earth God's Cave (1)

Emma closed her eyes and rested her hands against the tree. The rough trunk brushing against her palm. She let go of the notion that this was a ridiculous and silly affair and simply concentrated on the wood…the tree.

Despite the darkness, Emma felt something tug within her, and then she felt it.

It wasn't only one tree at all, not one living and sentient being that was alive. Its roots sank and covered a distance in the soil. Close beside it were the roots of another plant and then another.

They were all interwoven together, a natural system and habitat that extended far beyond what her normal eyes could see. To say that a tree was not as alive as an animal or person because it could not move was a false statement.

Its roots reached out and crawled far beyond what people believed in and its own voice was something that not anyone could hear. It had its own language, thoughts, and a sound that didn't reach her ears but spoke to her soul.
