A Rude Awakening

8 A.M. in the hospital. Matt quickly wakes up from his sleep due to an unexpected 'feeling' shocking him awake. He quickly looks around and notices a few people watching him as he was sleeping. What was that feeling he thinks to himself. Abilities, he thinks to himself and he notices a new one appearing in there. Danger sense. But why did something like that appear while I'm sleeping in the hospital?

"Good morning Matt. Are you feeling better from yesterday?"-Carl

"Did you stay up all night while injured?"-Mrs. Simmons asks with a slight glare

"I'm feeling pretty good all things considered. Of course I didn't stay up all night, Mom."-Matt says with a slight drop of sweat coming down. He now understands where the danger sense came from.

"Who are these other people in the room?"-Matt

"These are the Johnson's, they wanted to thank you for rescuing their daughter."-Mrs. Simmons

"Alice. isn't there something you want to say to him?"-Mr. Johnson says gently to the little girl hiding behind him. A little girl with a couple of band aids on her arms and legs shyly approaches the bed with her arms behind her back.

"Thanks for saving me Mister. I made you a present."-Alice says while holding out a simple card.

"Thank you for the gift. I'm happy you are okay."-Matt says while patting her on the head and grabbing the card. He reads the card and chuckles while feeling grateful for his quick actions that day.

"And we also want to thank you for saving our daughter. We can't even imagine what it would've been like if you weren't there. So thank you young man, if there's ever anything we can do for you just ask."-Mrs. Johnson

"Don't worry about the what ifs. She is fine and I should make a full recovery soon. I'm just happy I could help Alice."-Matt

"We'll take our leave now so you can get some rest. We left our contact info with your mother if you ever need to get in contact with us. Thank you once again young man."-Mr. Johnson says before leaving with his family. A shy Alice quickly waves at Matt before darting out of the room.

"So when can I get out of here?"-Matt

"The doctor said he wanted to keep you for one more day as observation but then it should be fine for you to be discharged."-Mrs. Simmons

"Well that's not too bad considering I got hit by a car. You and Carl don't have to hang out here. I'll just relax for a day and watch some t.v. anyways. It'll be pretty boring. Also did anybody call my work?"-Matt

"I told them you needed a day off because you were hit by a car and they said that if you don't show up by tomorrow you'll be fired. Assholes."-Carl

"It's fine, they didn't pay much anyways. This is a good chance to think about finding a real job actually."-Matt

"Mom, if you could later bring my laptop and flash drive so that I can submit some applications that would be great."-Matt

"Sure honey, is there anything else you need from home while I'm there?"-Mrs. Simmons

"Maybe a change of clothes for when i get discharged? Also, where's my phone?"-Matt

"It was pretty beaten up from the accident, but it still works barely."-Carl says sheepishly

"Wow is there any visible part of the screen left? Guess I can use voice commands until I get a replacement."-Matt

"I already talked to your carrier and explained what happened, they said they'd love to give you a free replacement for your actions. It should be here in a few days."-Mrs. Simmons

"Thanks Mom, you're the best."-Matt

After a few more minutes of conversation between the three, Matt tells them he wants to get a bit of rest. His mother and friend take the hint and leave the room. Once they are gone Matt does not go to sleep but begins to plan out his actions for the near future.

"System why did my MP go up when I didn't do anything?"-Matt

"Now that there is mana in your body, it will naturally attract slight amounts of mana in the air on its own. The reason it's so slow is because there is very little mana in the world and it's an unconscious process, somewhat like breathing. If you could make it an active process, the results would be better."-System

"Something like meditation then? I could try it. By the way system, are there any kind of missions you can give me or any ways to level up?"-Matt

"There are, just think 'Missions' and the tab will open for you. The only other way to level up is to 'defeat' living creatures. You can choose to kill them for maximum XP, or experience points. You can also obtain lesser points by making them lose the will to fight or ability to fight."-System

"Do plants count in that then?"-Matt

"They do but the XP earned would take a few months to hit level 2 based on the fact that they have no will to fight and no ability to fight but they do possess life so they would provide XP."-System

"Can you tell me the average stats of a normal person?"-Matt

"The average human will have 10 points on each stat, but some may have a higher intelligence while having a lower strength or the opposite can also be true. It is hard to find someone like yourself who exceeds all the average stats but it is not impossible.Someone like a martial artist would likely have the physical stats, endurance/strength/agility, all at around 15. Remember having stats at about 15 puts you at 1.5x the normal human. That is why reaching 20 in a stat not only makes your stat 2x that of a normal human, but also provides you with a perk. This perk shows that you are breaking the bounds of a human."-System

Matt takes a moment to digest this information, but only a moment which he realizes is due to his high intelligence. Matt assigns 5 of his 12 free points to endurance to reach 20 endurance. *Ding* Host has gained the perk 'Tough Skin'

Appraisal

Tough Skin- The ability to make skin more resistant to damage. At this level you are highly resistant to blunt and sharp weapons but only slightly resistant to guns. Those who attack you will feel like they are hitting thick leather armor. Ability scales with endurance.
