Lin Chao stroked his chin and cast his gaze toward the dense pack of zombies. There were at least a hundred of them on the roads. While he could kill all of them, he would expose himself in doing so.
He considered and pointed toward the greenway by the road. "I'll distract them so you can slip past at the same time. We'll meet at the end of the street later."
His companions were shocked. The doctors and nurse looked delighted; if someone diverted the zombies' attention, their chances of survival would no doubt increase significantly.
"No way!" Chu Shanhe could not help saying, "Bro Lin Chao, you're dexterous but there are too many of these monsters. If they thronged you, the consequences are unimaginable!"
Lin Chao retorted coldly, "Listen to me. Stop wasting time!"
Chu Shanhe choked before he clenched his teeth as he replied, "I'll stay back with you. We can at least cover for each other. Little Song, you take them there first."
Officer Little Song was glancing at Lin Chao in awe when he heard Chu Shanhe and quickly replied, "Brother Lin Chao is only a civilian and he could fulfill such a sacrifice. How can a soldier like me step back? Let me bring up the rear with you guys!"
When the doctors and nurse heard them argue again, they were immediately unsettled, but the vice director was chastised by Officer Little Song for speaking up earlier and dared not say another word now. He could only cuss at them loudly in his heart. 'Three dumbasses! Rushing to get yourselves killed!
"Little Song, listen to the order!" Chu Shanhe reprimanded.
"But…" Officer Little Song panicked.
Chu Shanhe's face fell. "No buts. Are you going against military command?"
Officer Little Song chuckled bitterly. "Brother Chu, stop repressing me with military command. I'll listen to you, alright?"
It was then that Chu Shanhe let a smile slip and turned back to look at Lin Chao. "Let's go. Where do we target first?"
Lin Chao glimpsed at him and repeated himself distantly, "I've already told you that you're going with them. You'll just be dragging me down if you come with me."
Astonished, Chu Shanhe flushed. "I know that I'm not as skillful as you but we can at least look out for each other. I can't allow myself to let you cover for all of us."
Lin Chao picked up the pistol and aimed at Chu Shanhe's forehead. "I can grant your wish if it's to die fast."
Chu Shanhe was shocked. "Br–brother Lin Chao, relax. I understand. I'll go with them. Put down your gun. It's easy to misfire."
"Move quickly later. Don't sweat too much. They have a sharp sense of smell. You'll lure them over," Lin Chao said as he icily lowering his pistol.
"Brother Lin Chao, you seem to understand these monsters very much huh?" Chu Shanhe questioned in surprise.
Taking another peek at him, Lin Chao raised his gun again.
"Don't, don't. I'll keep quiet." Chu Shanhe took a few steps back with a dry chortle seeing that Lin Chao was going to threaten him again with the pistol.
Officer Little Song who was standing by the side could not help feeling amused. It was true that one thing subdued another. He had never seen Chu Shanhe being tongue-tied. It had always been the latter intimidating and overwhelming the others, this was the first time he was shushed by someone.
Lin Chao took them to the junction. Calculating the distance among the zombies, he picked up a fallen leather shoe and threw it toward a car window.
The shoe flew over a hundred meters and shattered the glass violently!
The amazing arm strength took the group by surprise. They could do dozens of meters but a hundred meters and above would be exceeding a normal person's limit. It was difficult! Possible only if it were someone with Herculean strength! Furthermore, the shoe had broken the window with alarming precision.
Stray zombies were instantly drawn in by the shattering noise and enclosed the trashed car but quickly dispersed again when they found no food.
Lin Chao hand signaled Chu Shanhe for them to head toward the greenway while he dashed toward a beaten car that had been damaged from a crash.
The car door was agape, the car window was blasted, and there was half a skeletal remain on the floor with a little flesh left. Lin Chao stepped across it and went into the car.
Stepping on the accelerator, the exhaust pipe grumbled at once.
Vroom!
The noise was unusually striking in the dead silent road.
When Chu Shanhe and the group saw what Lin Chao was doing, they nearly bit their tongue off from shock.
God! Is he trying to kill himself?
They had thought about driving to escape but cars were haphazardly stopped on the roads, creating severe congestion. They could not accelerate at all.
Moreover, the sound of driving would attract zombies. These creatures moved fast and were insistent on giving chase. Even if a few of them could be knocked off by the car, the rest would still flock over and some would dive toward the wheels while others would be run down. Once the car ran a zombie down, its speed would either be greatly reduced or the vehicle would immediately flip.
This alone made driving suicide!
The group did not expect someone who looked as smart as Lin Chao to choose such a stupid method to draw away the monsters. It was effective but it was throwing his life away!
For a moment, this handful of people were overcome with emotions. Forget the apocalypse, even if it were in peacetime, how many out there were willing to sacrifice themselves for others?
Mixed feelings washed over the two doctors and the nurse — gratitude, shame, a wakeup call to their conscience, but the feelings were temporary, swiftly vanishing within them as their only thought after seeing the zombies being drawn away was to flee! To leave here alive!
Even if they had to die, they did not want the cause to be bitten dead by these revolting monsters!
Humans were, in fact, not as terrified of dying. Many were well sheltered and fed but they chose to jump off buildings or slit their wrists. Humans were sometimes resilient creatures. They could unleash unimaginable willpower and perseverance but they were sometimes very weak. A little hardship or a little setback would have made one think that it was better to be dead than alive.
Nonetheless, even when these people were unafraid of dying, they began to fear it upon seeing the unnerving faces of these zombies because a death like this was too scary!
Death was easy when one was shot dead. It would be torture if one had to die slowly from being bitten piece by piece.
Lin Chao breathed in relief once he saw Chu Shanhe and their group began moving toward the greenway. He stepped on the accelerator pedal and drove to the road parallel to them. Like their guiding light, he distracted the horde of zombies with the sound of his exhaust.
With the shadow of the car window concealing him, Lin Chao was not worried about the group seeing the inside of the car. A glow flashed across his eyes before the light around him danced while being refracted. If Chu Shanhe and their group were in the car, they would be horrified to see that there was nobody in the driver seat. Only the steering wheel was moving.
Invisibility! This was one of the effects of light manipulation!
