Roar! Roar!
Zombies chased after the sound of the exhaust pipe and swarmed to the car from every direction. The vehicle acted as a magnet, securely pulling them in.
From a distance, there were at least a hundred zombies surrounding the car. It was a mass of black while their putrescent throats croaked hoarsely. The hostile growls raised one's hair. Plus, they were being encircled by so many decayed faces. Even a veteran soldier who was used to seeing dead people would be shuddering from the fright too.
Bang! Bang!
Two zombies lunged from the front but Lin Chao did not steer away from them. Instead, he increased the velocity and charged over, knocking and flipping both zombies from the top of his car into the throng of zombies behind.
The windshield was smashed by one of the zombies' heads and cracked in a spider web pattern, splitting the view into fragments and shards. Squinting, Lin Chao kept the pressure on the accelerator and accelerated on the street at eighty miles per hour, steering left and right to avoid obstacles.
Chu Shanhe and their group pushed forward on the greenway cautiously while keeping an eye on Lin Chao. They had goosebumps when they saw the hundred over zombies that were not unlike famished wolves hunting the car.
Chu Shanhe wore a complex expression. He did not expect someone who he had just met to save him so bravely. This altruistic act was one that he would be ashamed to be compared to!
If you survive, I owe you this life of mine! Chu Shanhe promised in his heart as he stared at the black car.
Officer Little Song cheered for Lin Chao quietly with a serious face. Suddenly, two collided cars were seen blocking the way as they lay horizontal across the road in front of the black car.
Oh no! Officer Little Song was aghast at the sight.
It was apparent that Chu Shanhe saw it as well as he too, looked horrified. With the speed of the predating zombies, they would catch up with the car once it stopped even a little. The two cars were fatal hurdles!
The doctors and the nurse were no exception to feeling nervous. They had yet to reach the halfway point of the street yet. If the zombies were to eat Lin Chao, they would be next.
Observed by the anxious spectators, the black vehicle did not slow down but picked up speed abruptly as it suddenly shook!
Is he panicking? Chu Shanhe's heart sank.
However, his eyes bulged at the next moment as he stared at the black car in disbelief.
Following the jolt, one side of the black vehicle's wheels hovered into the air. It was speeding with only two wheels on one side.
Swoosh!
The black car slotted into the gap between the two obstructing cars just at the right angle and skidded past them!
Officer Little Song, the two doctors, and the nurse dropped their jaws, especially the female nurse who found it hard to believe her eyes. Did such magical driving skills not exist only in the special effects within the confines of a feature film?
Chu Shanhe was a little stupefied. He thought that ancient practitioners did not like technology and rarely even used mobile phones that were considered a necessity to stay away from radio frequencies and radiation. How could he be so adept in driving?
Passing the stumbling blocks, the black car continued speeding away.
Seeing that the zombies were drawn further, Chu Shanhe hurried the rest. The group arrived at the end of the road five minutes later, unable to see any zombie anymore as they had all been attracted by Lin Chao.
The black vehicle was no longer in their sight as well.
The group sat waiting at the roadside.
Officer Little Song felt apologetic. "He's so kind! He'll make it to major general for sure if he enlisted. There's rarely someone so altruistic even during the peacetime, what's more during a time like this where chaos is everywhere!"
Looking left and right where the road was empty with only weeping wind and littered carcasses, the vice director of the hospital shuddered and spoke timidly, "Uhm, why don't we go to the meeting point first?"
Chu Shanhe retracted his gaze from the direction that Lin Chao had left and trained it on his face coldly like a sharp blade. "We've promised to wait here. Do you think it's appropriate to abandon him like this when you were just saved by him?"
The hospital's vice director did not expect Chu Shanhe who had been amicable to him all this while to spit venom. He was slightly flustered but he did not give up persuading them. Controlling his tone, he said in a pitiful voice, "The odds were against him when he was being pursued by so many zombies. If we keep waiting and if other zombies came, we'd have wasted his effort. He won't rest in peace if he finds out what happened."
"Rest in peace your a*s!" Officer Little Song could not bear listening to him as he said while looking at him abhorrently, "This is the first time I realize that one can actually be so contemptible and shameless. And you're a doctor, a vice-director of a hospital? Where's your compassion as a doctor? Your benevolence? Will your conscience sit well within you when you abandon someone who just saved you with his life? Or do you not have conscience at all?"
Chu Shanhe signaled for him to stop with a wave of the hand and looked up at the vice director coldly. "Remember, I'm saving you because I'm obeying the oath I made as a soldier. The research institute needs your expertise now that the whole world is being eaten away by the virus. If you guys contribute nothing at the institute, I'll extract the three of you from there myself!"
"Captain Chu, you can't…" The hospital's vice director was visibly upset.
Raising a hand to stop him, Chu Shanhe replied icily, "Also, Lin Chao is my brother from now on. I disallow anyone to harbor any ill intention toward him. Otherwise, I'll wipe out that person even if I have to do without my status as a soldier!"
The hospital's vice director opened his mouth but not a sound came up. It felt like words were stuck in his throat before they were swallowed again when he saw the looming killing intent in Chu Shanhe's eyes. He had no doubt that a gun would shoot a bullet through his head if he suggested that they left once more.
Ten minutes, then twenty minutes… Time passed slowly.
In a blink of an eye, half an hour went by.
Chu Shanhe looked grimmer. Realistically, he personally did not think that Lin Chao could return alive. He chose to wait because he still held on to the sliver of hope... Hoping that a miracle would present itself. Yet, it had been so long that it was obvious that Lin Chao had…
Officer Little Song sat by the road while looking at his hand silently. Just a while ago, this hand had passed a gun to the boy just over his twenties and now, the boy had taken more than a hundred zombies for them while holding that gun… He clenched his hand into a fist.
Chu Shanhe slowly pulled his gaze back. He looked a little numbed when he announced hoarsely. "Let's go."
Officer Little Song stood up then, suddenly catching sight of a black dot when he was about to turn around. He trembled as his eyes were blown wide staring towards the direction.
It's him!
He's still alive!
Officer Little Song could not contain his emotions. His eyes got glassy, and he sprinted over without a care.
