The gunshots were vigorous, in addition to the noise of the shell casings being expelled and the shrill resonance of steel being shot, the sounds came from a high altitude!
Chu Shanhe and Officer Little Song were slightly bewildered.
Gunshots? Why don't we hear anything?
Despite their doubt, the whirring of blades could be heard approaching from the sky far away. A black dot then appeared in the air and was closely followed by another tiny black dot.
Chu Shanhe gazed into the sky for a moment before he could affirm that they were helicopters, announcing enthusiastically, "They're here!"
Lin Chao stared at the black dots. "Don't show yourselves yet. These two choppers are fighting. We're on the ground, it's easy to get involved."
"Fighting?" Chu Shanhe was stunned.
Lin Chao did not answer him but clenched his pistol instead.
Soon, both helicopters arrived above them. The helicopter in front hovered around the sky while it avoided getting fired at by the helicopter at the back as it went around the square.
Chu Shanhe saw a strong young man who was handling the machine gun in the helicopter in front, immediately recognizing him in delight. "It's Leizi. He's here!"
"Luo Lei?" Lin Chao blinked.
Chu Shanhe looked at him in bewilderment. "How do you know?"
Lin Chao understood it instantly. Luo Lei was the man who was blinded by power and conspired against Chu Shanhe but it was still the early apocalypse and he was still Chu Shanhe's brother.
"The chopper behind seems to be his enemy," Lin Chao said while stroking his chin, "Shooting it down should be fine, right?"
Chu Shanhe was also staring at the two helicopters in battle and looked caught in between. "It must be others from the military who know that I'm trapped here and sabotage the rescue. Damn it! Brother Lin Chao, do you have an idea regarding how we're going to shoot it down?"
"This'll do," Lin Chao answered waving his pistol.
"A pistol?" Chu Shanhe and Officer Little Song looked at him, puzzled. If they had not witnessed Lin Chao's dexterity and his amazing driving skills, they would have ignored him directly.
Shooting a helicopter with a pistol?
This was something that would only happen in television dramas. Disregarding the accuracy, the pistol's effective shooting range was about fifty meters and its velocity would weaken rapidly as it exceeded this range, reducing its power even if one could aim precisely. Moreover, both helicopters were at least forty floors away — a distance of more than 60 meters. It would not do much harm even if it was shot.
Furthermore, how much damage could one bullet do to a helicopter?
The bottom of the helicopter was coated steel. Even if they shot at it within a distance of thirty meters, it would only make a small hole. Shooting a helicopter with a pistol was a ridiculous thought in itself!
Lin Chao could read the two men's thoughts but he did not explain himself. Instead, he climbed the building's drain pipe like an agile monkey and swiftly went up more than ten floors to get to the top.
Shock colored Officer Little Song's face as he mumbled, "Is he the reincarnation of Spiderman?"
Chu Shanhe chuckled humorlessly. "It'll be close enough if he stands at the rooftop but the bullet won't do much damage to the chopper. We can only hope that Leizi can fire accurately. I'd like to see who's coming at me!"
Once Lin Chao arrived at the rooftop, he found a zombie wandering about. However, by refracting light, he managed to hide in a corner as he observed both aircraft shooting at each other.
A minute later, he loaded the pistol and took aim at the second helicopter's rear oil tank before he confidently pulled the trigger.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Three shots were fired.
The pistol's recoil was fully controlled by Lin Chao. As he looked up, the helicopter's rear oil tank had begun leaking. Yellow fuel flowed in tiny threads.
Knowing that victory was theirs, Lin Chao went down from the drainpipe again.
Chu Shanhe noticed the second helicopter's damaged oil tank and looked at Lin Chao astounded. "How did you do it? The chopper's coated steel can't be easily pierced by a bullet."
Nodding, Lin Chao replied, "That's why I used three bullets."
"Three?" Officer Little Song was stupefied.
Lin Chao took a glimpse at him before elaborating, "The repetition of three bullets on the same spot will penetrate the material."
Chu Shanhe was flabbergasted.
"How is this possible? The chopper isn't stationary. Even if it was stationary, hitting the exact same spot three times consecutively is not an easy feat. Although some sharpshooters in the military can hit bullseyes continuously, the bullseye is three inches in diameter. It's on a different level from what you did, and the chopper's moving all over the place!"
Lin Chao nodded once more and replied nonchalantly, "That's why I used a minute to observe its movement."
Chu Shanhe was utterly speechless.
Officer Little Song gave him a thumbs up and commented, "I finally know what's a genius living in this age is like. A real sharpshooter indeed, only a minute of observation and you were able to analyze the movements of this chopper, tsk tsk…"
As they spoke, the first helicopter seized the chance to fire aggressively at the second helicopter once its fuel leaked. Once the pilot was shot, the whole helicopter staggered before it crashed.
Boom!
Crash-landing at the square, the blades were wrecked as they collided against the ground, making a few deep white trails.
The loud clash drew in all the zombies nearby. The two men with bloodied heads that struggled out of the aircraft were horrified by the sight and were drowned by the throng of the undead. Agonized cries broke out from the pile but they were silenced after a short moment.
Then, the first helicopter in the sky slowly dropped the escape ladder.
The two doctors and the female nurse were overwhelmed with emotion. They had been waiting for this moment for so long with their nerves high-strung all this while and now, they were finally safe.
Chu Shanhe tapped Lin Chao's shoulder with a complex expression. "Bro Lin Chao, you're an amazing talent. You've got to look for me if you face any difficulties in the future!"
Lin Chao nodded.
"I'm leaving." Chu Shanhe was the last one to grab onto the escape ladder. As he was brought up to the helicopter, he shouted, "You've got to stay alive!"
Officer Little Song shouted as well, "I'll make you my best dish next time we meet!"
Lin Chao rolled his eyes in amusement. Are they not scared of attracting the zombies by being so loud?
He waved and turned to leave.
Chu Shanhe and Officer Little Song were a little lost for words. They did not expect such a touching scene of farewell to be ruined by Lin Chao like this. What a bummer.
Luo Lei pulled Chu Shanhe into the helicopter and glanced at the direction Lin Chao had left toward curiously. "Who's that person? Why didn't he come with you guys? He seemed to be the one who shot at the oil tank of that other chopper earlier, causing the pilot to panic so I had the opening to shoot it down."
Chu Shanhe answered with a sigh, "He's Lin Chao, a brother I just got to know. He saved my life and I invited him to join the army but he wasn't willing. It's a pity."
"Saved you?" Luo Lei was stunned for a moment before stating seriously, "He's your brother, so he's mine too. If I meet him in the future, I'll help him with all I have!"
Chu Shanhe nodded. His gaze fell on the wrecked helicopter and turned icy. "Who's targeting me?"
"It's that bastard, Bai Fan!"
Rage burned in Luo Lei's eyes. "He sent these people. The military is a mess now. Lots of generals are leaving the army with their troops, wanting to make themselves a king. Only the old commander and some older generals stayed, reluctant to run around."
"Make themselves king?" Chu Shanhe scoffed.
