Chapter 166: Followed

I followed behind in silence as the kid moved through the streets. Much to my amusement, the boy was moving towards the border of the noble district not far from the apartment. I followed without letting this child know that I was following him. Not too long later, he reached a hole in a wall in a broken-looking house in an alleyway, and I slowly entered behind him.

I heard little feet pattering around upstairs, and soon I some larger steps, and I made my way without making a noise following the sound of children's feet moving around. I moved so quietly that unless someone was looking directly at me, there was no betraying sound coming from me. I found the next hole the kids were hiding in and stopped myself as I heard them start to talk.

"What did you find, Jay?" A boy asked, his voice sounding older than the kid that I found following me.

"Boss!" I heard the kid I captured and released, "I don't know who you had me follow, but they caught me. She is a scary boss. I had trouble even holding my bladder near her." The boy said.

"Where was she going?" The older boy asked, his voice trying to sound intimidating.

"Somewhere towards the slums. Not sure, but she left the warehouse, as you told me she would, then started to move. Then suddenly found me as we were heading toward the slums." The boy said.

"The Slums? Why would she be headed in that direction?" The older boy said, not expecting an answer. "Were you followed?" He suddenly asked.

"No way someone followed me, boss. You know how slippery I am in the city!" The boy named Jonny replied in denial.

I wanted to chuckle since I didn't even know he was trying to shake me off. I had followed others and shook off some of the best in the world. This kid is attempting to do so and never even reached my notice.

"Good, I will talk to the man that gave us the gold. I want you there again tomorrow. Don't get caught this time." The older boy finished.

I heard the patter of feet again and silently moved out of the broken wall. I jumped up to the roof, swung up easily, and watched the boy I caught run out. A couple of seconds later, an older boy ran out and looked around. I watched him for a couple of moments before he started walking down the street. I was torn between picking this boy up or following him. I quickly opted for the latter, moved stealthily behind him, and quickly jumped onto the roof at some points.

I moved and glided through the city till the boy arrived at a place I didn't recognize. Instead of confronting him or doing anything else, I watched as the boy stood outside the house or business that wasn't marked. He just stood there loitering for a time despite how much of a rush he had looked in before. I watched and felt like maybe I should have picked him up instead when it finally happened.

An older man came up to the boy, half glared at him, and stood beside him. Out in the open was pretty ballsy, in my opinion, and I moved closer. Eavesdropping was an art of its own, and for the first time, I truly loved my ancestry as a Phantom Tiger-kin as I could hear what they were saying from much farther away than in my old life.

"What is it?" The older man asked.

"My boy was picked up by the woman you asked us to follow." The boy said, his voice fearful. "The woman was traveling toward the Slums when she picked up my runner."

"What?" The man said, "You came here after knowing your boy was found?" The man asked, but it was more of a demand.

"My boy has never been followed, and some Tiger-kin will not be able to. My boy is too slippery, and he wouldn't fuck up after being caught. He would do his best to ensure he wasn't followed," The boy said; his fear-filled tone made me more than aware of how much he feared the man he was talking to.

"Still," The older man said, and I could hear him shuffling in his shoes. "Towards the Slums?" his voice inflected the question as it trailed off, and he grumbled. "That woman should have no ties in the slums. Her connections should all be with a Marquis, which is already a pain in the ass. The Marquiss is a friend of the Duchess as well," The man muttered, barely audible. "Fine, Call your boy off; we don't want her getting spooked and running." The man said and dug out some coins I could hear the clink of gold. "Stay away for now from me, and don't contact me. I will contact you if there is another job. Now hide and fuck off." The man said, and they broke up, and I smirked.

That boy could be saved for later, and I couldn't help but wonder about the man. I wasn't about to stop following people today, and if I didn't follow him now, I would never figure out who he was working for. I moved to follow when I froze. My skin goosebumped, and I slide back slowly while feeling the creeps. My body told me not to follow that man, and I was going to follow my instincts. I turned and moved slowly away.

I leaped from the roof, began to flee slowly, and peeked behind me, watching the roof; I felt the need to look behind. I felt my skin crawl as I saw a different man standing there looking around, and I knew that whoever that old man was, he hadn't been alone. I moved into the streets with my heart pounding and began to head to the docks first in order to cover my scent before heading to the Gangs headquarters. I looked around and didn't feel like I was being followed, but I also never spotted the man following the old man who talked to that kid. I couldn't help but wonder why that man wasn't sent instead of the kid, as I probably wouldn't have been aware of him. Was it a human resources thing, or was that man hostile to the older man that talked to the kid?

So many things going on in this city solidified my belief that I needed to get out of it. I would leave my Gang and business behind, and hopefully, in a couple of years or more, I would be in a position to enjoy some of the profits and the continuation of my long-term plan. But for now, the Empire was too hot. I moved and dunked my body into the dirty water of the docks and quickly stole a cloak from a dock worker walking through an alleyway after knocking him out. I stank now and needed to wash, but that was okay. No longer could someone follow me by scent, and I felt paranoia about being followed. The problem with paranoia was whether you were actually paranoid if people were out to get you.

After moving through the city for a while, smelling like the dirty docks water and ensuring I wasn't being followed, I reached the Gang headquarters and headed down. I sat down in the conference room and sighed.

"Fuck, you smell like dirty docks water," Cassandra complained a minute after entering the room and closing the door. I could see her face twist, and I rolled my eyes.

"Cut the act," I told the sociopath.

"Fine," Cassandra said, pausing for a moment before continuing, 'You really do stink, though. Is there a reason you took a swim?"

The question was completely valid, and I nodded. "Making sure I wasn't followed. I need to leave this city earlier rather than later, and my skin is bugging me," I paused, and I chuckled, "And no, it isn't the dock water. Someone tried to follow me, and I couldn't learn much other than someone paid them. This person is scary, so I think some new players are coming in, and we need to get my exit strategy moving. How is the progress?" I asked.

"Well," Cassandra said with a smile, "It is going really well, to be frank. I already got a shipping company willing to take you in, and a couple of other boats are suddenly needing repairs. Those repairs will not be complete for a couple of days." Her smile was one of a professional, loving their work. "I think the exit strategy is ready, but I am also getting some supplies to add to it for you so that you can travel easier and a little cover identity if possible. I am pulling a lot of stops, and hopefully, the people I put in charge of the key issues know how to keep their mouths shut. Then again, those two pawns that you interrogated the other week have a lot not wanting to be on your bad side." Cassandra said with a smirk.

"Good," I said genuinely. Cassandra was dangerously competent, and I knew I would lose all control of the city's Gang once I left this city. I was a shadow leader, and Cassandra was the face of it. I had to keep her in control with benefits instead of loyalty. As a Sociopath as well, she would never be bound by feelings which made her even more dangerous. Still, I had to use the tools I had instead of the ones I wished for.

"The Necromancer Guild has set up a meet too, although they have voiced their displeasure at you changing your mind all the time," Cassandra said with a slight fake chuckle. "They are too hated not to bite any and all help given, though." Cassandra finished.

"Yeah," I replied and leaned back. "Where are it and the time?" I asked.

"Warehouse in our territory, actually," Cassandra said with a smile, "With the thought of us helping, they are willing to take a bit more risk to prove that they trust us a little and want to talk where you feel comfortable."

I snorted in contempt, remembering the first meet-up. "Okay," I said, and Cassandra told me the location, and I smiled. It was right near the docks on the border of our territory but in a safe location by a couple of gathering points to some of the Gang members that were exporting their favorite businesses. Or, for lack of a better term, there was a brothel catered to dock workers and sailors who had just gotten off the boats. It was a great location for it, and I nodded to myself. "Perfect, Good work," I told her honestly. "I think things are going to go off the handle soon, Cassandra," I continued, "You will soon be free in almost every way while I am gone, although it isn't like I controlled you much," I told her, and she nodded. "Now, I am going to go to the meeting spot after cleaning myself up a bit. We may or may not see each other depending on what is happening in the next couple of days. Be careful, Cassandra. Things are going to get complicated."

"Yes, they are," Cassandra replied as I stood up. "I honestly cannot wait to see what you build with gangs in the future," Cassandra said, making me turn to her and see her smile. "Your long-term plan is larger than this city and even this Empire since you were not originally in this city by my estimates. I wonder what you will have created and if what I have done is enough for your plans when you come back. Honestly, You make me ambitious." Cassandra said with a sharp smile.

It was probably the first showing of true emotion on her face that I had seen, and I smiled. "My plans are only beginning," I told her, "Either we accomplish them or die trying." I finished thinking about the ambitions that I was so close to reaching in my previous life. My ambitions never changed for something smaller and only grew to encompass more in this world. "But be that as it may, we must overcome this small hurdle of me leaving this city before everything goes to shit, I believe. See you sooner or later, Cassandra."

With that, I departed, leaving Cassandra in the conference room and the smell of foul Dock water behind me as I walked out and headed to the docking area to get a room at an inn to clean myself. At least showers were readily available in this world if you were willing to pay.

That last thought made me smile as I hid under my cloak and walked away.
