Three days later, all villagers were carefully checked and released.
One of the families, the Fu family had kindly offered to host her in their homes for 2 days before she would leave for the capital.
Cara stepped inside the family's large courtyard and marvelled at how big and spacious it was compared to her apartment in the modern day.
While not as technologically advanced, life seemed much simpler and peaceful. Honestly, Cara didn't mind it. And for some strange reason, she felt more at ease.
"Doctor, we have prepared a room for you here. Let me show you the way." Mrs Fu smiled.
Cara nodded as she followed Mrs Fu. She was led to another beautiful courtyard with an elegant room beside.
"This is our nicest guest room which we have saved for you. Please feel at ease during your stay here." Mrs Fu smiled warmly.
"Thank you Mrs Fu," Cara smiled back gratefully.
Cara settled herself on one of the chairs as soon as Mrs Fu left. She was exhausted after having to take care of patients for one week straight. Thank god she had Chang Ying to help her.
Speaking of which, she hoped Chang Ying was doing well. Chang Ying had bravely volunteered to help out at the neighbouring village that had the same illness. She had already left in the morning.
Before she left, Cara had given her a paper crane she had folded.
"It's something to remember me by, and a symbol of hope and healing. They say a thousand cranes will make your wish come true. I think you'll be a great doctor in the future." Cara had smiled at her. She had no doubt that the cheery little girl would have a bright future.
Cara smiled at the memory and walked to the bed to lie down on the soft cushion.
Over the past few nights, she had certain jolts of memory from the previous owner. It turned out that the previous owner was a young orphan called Yue Ying. She had been found in a basket by a kind soul who had rushed her to the infirmary as she was having a fever.
Yue Ying had been adopted by the infirmary owner when she was three and had studied under him since, learning all his medical skills. He started bringing Yue Ying along to treat patients when he realised that she had a gift in medicine.
Unfortunately, he had passed away from the plague, and Yue Ying herself too, until Cara transmigrated into her body.
There were many things left unanswered though, such as how she got to this place, which year it was, and what she was supposed to do now that her so called adopted father had passed away.
Now Yue Ying had no family in this world... She had no idea how to contact Yue Ying's birth family either. The only clue Yue Ying had of her family was a black pearl attached on a red string that was around her neck when she was found. Yue Ying had always wondered why she was abandoned and what her family was like, but she didn't know how and where to start looking. So all these years, she had never attempted to find her birth family.
Cara sighed, contemplating how she was going to start living a new life and take on a new identity as Yue Ying.
Slowly, lost in her thoughts, Cara fell into a deep slumber.
The two days past in a blur. Mostly because Cara had been so tired from tending to patients, she had spent most of the time sleeping and trying to recuperate. Mrs Fu would very kindly make her white fungus and ginseng soup every day to boost her strength.
It reminded her of the home cooked soups her mum used to make for her... Cara wondered how her family was doing. Were they doing well? Were they missing her?
It was finally the day that she would be heading to the capital. Cara changed into the gown that had been sent to her the night before. As she sat on the counter to do her make up, she finally saw her new face, albeit all blurry (olden day bronze mirrors were just not as clear).
Yue Ying's looks were above average with delicate features. With the luxurious gown she was donning, she might have even mistaken herself for a noble or princess.
Cara smiled as she played with the make up of the past. While they were mostly bright and red, Cara preferred the natural no-makeup makeup look. Yes, the 'korean' kpop look.
Cara wasn't a kpop fan, though she did listen to their music. She had, however, spent many hours watching Pony, a famous korean makeup artist, on youtube.
Adding to the finishing touches with a gradient lip effect, Cara was satisfied with how it turned out. She then got her belongings and made her way to the front door.
A carriage was waiting when she got there. She thanked the Fu family for their hospitality before getting on the carriage. Dan-lookalike was already inside drinking tea when she entered.
Cara greeted him and sat at his side.
As the carriage moved off, Cara continued to observe Dan-lookalike and his movements. She still couldn't get over the fact that he looked so much like Dan.
"How long are you going to stare?" Dan-lookalike turned and asked her.
