Resolve

Gemma boarded the plane back to Shanghai without incident. Apparently Charles was so angry that he didn't care if she left this time. Which was fine with her, because she was thoroughly upset.

Perhaps she should have thought thru posting that photo a little more, but his reaction had been over the top. His harshness was more than she could bare.

"What if I really was wrong about him?" She mumbled.

He had warned her he was incapable of love and unwilling to allow a woman to become close to him. What was the point of being his girlfriend if he held her at such a distance from him? Maybe giving up on him was the best course of action. As much as she cared for him, she couldn't handle constant harshness and always being pushed away.

So she strengthened her resolve, and connected her phone to the plane's WiFi and began e-mailing her resume to other companies. She had meant it when she told him she was quitting and she had to find another source of income. She refused to rely on her father's money.

Suddenly her phone buzzed with a text.

Charles: Where the heck did you go?

Gemma: None of your business.

Charles: Don't you think you owe me an explanation?

Gemma: No.

Charles: Excuse me?!

Gemma: You read it correctly the first time.

Charles: You are exhausting what is left of my patience.

Gemma: I never knew you had any patience.

Charles: GEMMA!

Gemma: My whereabouts are no longer your concern, Mr. Wen. I have resigned from your company and we are no longer in a dating relationship. Please don't contact me again unless it's to forward the last of my salary.

Charles: You'll regret this.

Gemma: I regret ever believing there was more to you than harshness. I freely admit I was wrong.

Charles: You don't mean that.

Gemma: I've never been more serious in my life. You win. I cannot teach you to love. I am obviously not qualified.

Charles: Gemma...

Gemma: Goodbye Mr. Wen.

Charles: Don't do this Gemma.

Gemma felt tears sting her eyes. She wouldn't fall for it this time. She turned her phone off and threw it in her bag. She stared out the window as the familiar sights of Shanghai came into view. It was a beautiful city but she couldn't find a reason to feel happy in that moment.

It turned out that letting go of a dream that she had held for so long wasn't easy. It hurt a lot more than she ever realized. She felt like her heart was an open and raw wound.

After the plane landed and everyone disembarked she headed to find her luggage. She grabbed her suitcase and hurriedly turned, bumping into someone and nearly falling. She felt strong arms steady her.

"Are you alright?" a warm voice asked.

She looked up into the face of a handsome man. She felt her face blush.

"Yes, thank you. I'm sorry about running into you." She said softly.

"It's okay. You seem in a hurry though." He assured her.

"I'm actually not. I'm headed home from a business trip so there's no rush." She said.

"Well I'm new to Shanghai. I'm going to start teaching at the University next week and I'm arriving today. I haven't had dinner yet. Since you live here, perhaps you could accompany me to dinner so that I find a good restaurant. My treat." He said.

Gemma observes him for a moment. Why not take a risk? He seemed kind and dinner in a public place was safe enough.

"Alright, let's go find a taxi." She said.
