[|Aesaer Kalvera Thesin|]
The sight of the sun shining through the leaves, providing a much-needed warmth, never ceases to amaze me. I pretended to sleep through the night as I thought about thalia's words, but as soon as I saw the first light, I stood to stretch my body, hearing it pop in multiple places. The elves had rotated their watch throughout the night, leaving relatively energized elves to wake up the rest of the camp, Well those that aren't already waking up at least. The air is crisp like a fallen leaf. I haven't thought about it but it seems like it's almost winter time or at least the time preceding it. I'll have to ask someone about it but until then...
A majority of the elves are awake now and are already destroying any remnants of their time, with a few heading to the area with the horses to presumably get them ready to hook up to the carriages. Those that aren't are gathering near Sentinel Feyrith for some sort of orders and I decide to join them. I stand behind the elves, most of them are taller than me, causing me to not get a clear view, but you don't need to see to listen.
He coughs to clear his throat and gives a small speech, "Today, after two long years, is the day we get to go home. This is coming up a few months ahead of schedule, and that is because of the unexpected magic anomaly that appeared two days ago. High command is deeming this a top priority and is sending more equipped soldiers to track and deal with this unknown threat. As for us, we are to report back to the Bastion about any findings on the rising bandit problem, then will be given the option to request for leave or continue serving. Right now, you are to get rid of any remnants of this camp then help prepare the carriages for travel. You know the drill, Six in each carriage plus two upfront to drive leaving six of you to defend and walk alongside the carriages. Not including our guest."
He looks at me even though I'm hidden in the small gathering. "You are Thalia's guest, wherever she goes, you go. Alright, let's move it, those that had the last watch sit in the carriage while the rest walk", He announced, heading toward the now prepared carriages. I watch as he climbs up to the front seat of the front carriage, seemingly intent on driving it.
I ignore him and look for Thalia, whos not very hard to find. She's heading for the middle carriage, the one filled with supplies, and looks back to, find me. Our eyes meet, and I understand the situation. Purposefully or, not she created a good opportunity to let us talk relatively privately. How sneaky. I chuckle a bit and walk towards her causing her to slightly nod and board the carriage. I couldn't help but notice how expertly and swiftly her lithe body moves, but quickly shook those thoughts away as I come upon the carriage. I climb up in quite an inexperienced manner that caused Thalia to lightly chuckle and say something about travelers and carriages. I ignore that small quip.
"I hope driving one of these isn't a two-person job. Never really bothered to learn how to," I say, "It doesn't seem that hard, I'm sure I'll get it eventually."
"It's easier than it looks. Anyways, Have you ever been to Else Thalis, Aesar?" She asks. I just shake my head. "that's what I assumed. I'll give you a small overview of one of the greatest elven cities on the eastern front!" She started, "Else Thalis was founded nearly 2000 years ago during the era of expansion. When a large group of elves fled from war happening in the west, they traveled farther east than any at the time and stumbled upon a seemingly endless forest. With few options, they braved the unforgiving land and trekked ever eastward setting up small encampments that later became towns and cities until they reached the end of the forest revealing the bluest waters you've ever seen. The elves who had traveled all the way there had deemed this place a perfect spot for a city and set up shop. This city later being called Else Thalis after the leader of the elves at the time. Hidden away from the rest of the world the elves built their new home, finding unexpected allies with the spirits native to the forest and being granted an even better understanding of magic. After 200 years had passed the small settlements they had erected, had become thriving cities. When they had decided to make their way back west to see what had become of the war-torn country's they were surprised When they found that the rest of the world had also thrived. There's an old saying 'If you can brave the darkness, you will be rewarded with light and prosperity," She took a moment to gather her thoughts but was interrupted by sentinel Feyrith. "Alright, it's time," He shouted in a commanding voice. I looked back at where the camp used to be, seeing nothing but an empty clearing. I have to commend these elves. They clean up quite quickly. I watch as the elves divide themselves, leaving six to walk along with the carts. Three in front, Three in back. I probably should've noticed this earlier, but these carriages are the type that has a protective canvas over to help block the sun or rain. Anyways...I turn my attention back to Thalia, who has two sets of reins in her hands and hands a set to me. "I'll have to cut the history lesson short. I'll teach you the basics, so listen closely."
I pay heed to her words as she briefs me on how to drive a cart. As I thought it's really simple, well in theory, I'm not too sure how good I'll be in practice. When I think I have it down, we're nearly an hour on the road already. I didn't realize how much time had passed and apologized to Thalia for making her talk for so long.
"Don't worry about it, it's actually a nice change of pace. Usually, all I do is scout out areas of interest and that gets boring after a while," She chuckled lightheartedly. I nod and look around at the beautiful sight of slow-moving trees and the sounds of the forest. The most prominent noise came from the carriage and horses. The clopping of their hooves and the rhythmic spinning of the wheels come together to form a harmonious song that temporarily filled my senses. Other sounds such as the muffled conversation of the elves and the odd birdcall can be heard as well, adding to the subtle beauty of the emerald green forest. "You were talking about the history of Else Thalis, but what is it actually like?" I question. This city is undoubtedly going to be a place where I'm going to spend a considerable time. I need to gather supplies and knowledge, which means I need to find a job. This adventurer association seems like a good place to start. "Of course. I'll save the history for another time. Well to start the city is divided into five sections, North, east, south, west, and the main hub which is in the center. Starting from the North it's...well it's the poorest area of the city. The slums, as they call it. it's occupied by both the poor and criminals who exploit them. I'd stay away from that area if I were you, nothing good will come from you being there. Next is the east district, it's on the coast so it's bustling with activity and work. You can find bars and ins at cheap prices around every corner, so it's a prime spot for tourists and those looking for work, But like the north district, it also has its dark side if you know where to look. The south district is unique in that is mostly walled off from the rest of the city and you need to pay a toll or have some form of identification or pass to enter. It's where the noble and royalty live and home to the highest quality shops in the city."
I listen intently while also focusing on the road ahead. In more ways than one.
