One of the things Ying Yue hated was being told they had something important to tell her and then ending up not telling her anything. She pursed her lips, starting to get upset. "If you won't tell me then I won't come back to work until next week." It was an empty threat on her part. She knew she loved Juyan too much to give up her work there. The most she could do was skip out on some of the menial missions.
She saw his expression falter a bit and snickered silently. She knew she was Big boss's most valuable agent and he wouldn't let go of her no matter what.
He gave up and looked her straight in the eye. "Fine. I'll tell you, but you have to promise me you won't do anything stupid."
Ying Yue grinned, making an x-mark on her heart and holding up her palm forward to symbolize her promise.
Big Boss rolled his eyes at her. "I got a call from CEO Fei earlier. He asked me for a detailed background check and information on some woman."
Woman? She'd never seen Fei Huangjin date anyone. She sat back, skeptical, and gestured Big boss to go on. "Who's the woman?"
He looked up at the ceiling with a grimace. "You."
Mo Yiling turned his head slightly to the direction of the two, listening in on their conversation.
She blinked. Did she hear that right? "I'm sorry, what did you say, big boss?"
Big Boss knew she would be surprised with the news. Hell, even he was stunned when Fei Huangjin called him up just now asking him about a woman named Ying Yue. But the man was an important client of Juyan and surprisingly, he offered quite a large sum for the job. He sat back and looked away. "I said he's digging info on you."
"Why?" She sat up, completely forgetting her promise not to panic. She was mortified. It was one thing to do a background check on your employee, but to call Juyan Intelligence for it was something beyond it. That meant CEO Fei wanted to know everything about her. Literally every little thing. Did he think she was behind the killing?
Should she just quit her job as his secretary?
He lifted up both hands like he didn't know what to do. "You know Juyan doesn't ask questions. We just do what we're asked to. Now like I said, don't do anything stupid…"
"I'll quit my job."
"You will not quit your job, shadow fox. What the hell. Give the man a break. He just found out you'd be willing to jump off a car for him--it's not surprising that he'd have you investigated." He sighed.
"How much?" She put both hands on the edge of the couch to steady herself. There were a lot about her past she didn't want dug up. "How much is he paying for it?"
"I'm sorry, shadow fox. But I've already breached SOP[1] to give you a heads up on this. I don't want to break confidentiality even more." Actually, he just didn't want her to worry about it. If she found out CEO Fei had offered Juyan Intelligence five hundred thousand dollars just for a little digging, he was sure Ying Yue would lose her control. The most they usually get for jobs like these would be about two hundred thousand dollars. And there was also the issue with her brother… "Don't worry. We'll keep your brother out of the report. And besides, Juyan is protecting you. He won't get much out of the intel, I promise."
She didn't respond. She was deep in thought already.
Big Boss leaned over and flicked her forehead.
"Ow! Big Boss!" Ying Yue rubbed her forehead. She hated it when he did that.
Big Boss stood up to leave. "I'll send you the same report we'll be giving him. Don't worry, we've rehearsed this." He turned to Mo Yiling, who was looking at them curiously with his eyebrows raised. "You deal with the report."
The tech genius gave a salute and went back to his computers.

Fei Huangjin got to work early the next day, and when he checked his e-mails, there was already one from Juyan Intelligence Agency.
He clicked it open and printed out the document, poured himself some whiskey, and sat down to run through the intelligence report. On the top right corner was a photo of his secretary. Her sharp eyes were penetrating, looking straight at the camera with no trace of shyness or insecurity. A small, gentle smile was on her lips, a sharp contrast to the look in her eyes. For some reason it affected Huangjin much like an arrowhead that hit its mark.
Most people didn't look good in ID or passport photos, but Ying Yue looked fresh, clean, and well, pretty.
When he interviewed her, he didn't bother looking into her educational background. He didn't need to. He simply shoved stock market data on her face like he always did with all interviewees and Ying Yue already had a financial solution, even pointing out which companies would be best to invest in and which one was a potential for failure. Add that to her beauty and he was done for. It blew his mind so much that he hired her on the spot and offered her a large sum of money so she wouldn't think of applying anywhere else. It was one of the best decisions he had made in his life. Back then, he didn't think too much of it, but now, he was incredibly curious on why she would want to simply work as his secretary.
Who was she, really? And what was she doing in Fei International?
The family background in the report indicated that she was an only child, and that Ying Yue's mother died during childbirth. Her father, on the other hand, was part of the Empire's Elite Special Forces--code name: Black Dragon. He died on a covert operation when she was just twelve years old.
He looked up from the document and stared at his door. No wonder she wasn't afraid to risk her life. These things were practically in her blood. Her father must have taught her to fend for herself at an early age.
Her grandfather took her in after her father's death, but he, too, died on her third year of college. Even with her full scholarship, she didn't have the financial capacity to pay rent and other expenses, so she started working and wasn't able to come back to school for her graduating year.
So that's why she applied to be his secretary, he thought. He specifically told HR he didn't need someone who finished college as long as the applicant could pass the interview. And Ying Yue passed it with flying colors.
He scanned her educational background and what he read made his eyebrows rise in surprise.
Ying Yue was accelerated in school. She finished high school at 16 with outstanding grades in all subjects. Her grades, coupled with an IQ of 145, got her a full scholarship at Imperial University. Her major was Business Management, and out of the 4 years it took to complete the program, she finished the first three years of college education in just two years.
She was always giving him expert opinions and had a keen eye on details. No wonder she was the perfect secretary. She was born for far greater things than being one.
Fei Huangjin smiled. The icy depth of his eyes melting into a puddle of warmth. He found her intelligence satisfying and incredibly sexy.
He scanned the report further until he read something that caught his eye.
