She didn't realize she'd been staring at it for a few minutes until someone came out of the door.
The man was probably in his middle to late-30's, and he was surprised to see her standing there outside his room. His eyebrows flew high up his forehead as he began to recognized her. He quickly bowed his head before her. "Young madame, if you are lost, I can take you to the master's office."
Ying Yue narrowed her eyes behind him. Her head was still back at the code. "Excuse me, sorry for the inconvenience, but what's this area supposed to be?"
The man -- and everyone else in the building -- had been ordered by Fei Huangjin to answer any questions by the madame and to help her out on anything, so he wasn't really surprised she was asking him about the place. "These are the rooms for guests and special agents."
"Guests and special agents?" Her curiosity piqued.
He nodded. "Sometimes we have alliances from elsewhere visiting, or double agents who need to stay here, and there are also special agents like me who've been absorbed by the Dragon Club without going through the traditional recruitment and initiation. We're assigned rooms here to keep us safe."
His answer only made her even more curious. "What do you mean you were absorbed by the Dragon Club?"
"Young madame, I used to be in the Special Forces. One of our missions went awry and I almost died, but one of the men from the Dragon Club brought me here to heal. The master has allowed me to stay, and since then, I've sworn loyalty to the syndicate."
Ying Yue's eyes widened. Fei Huangjin actually allowed such instances? That was pretty impressive. "But wouldn't the Special Forces be looking for you?"
The man offered her a polite smile, as if he was used to being asked this question. "I'm presumed dead by the state military. My team members all died during the last mission, and I'm not married, so I don't have any family left. I'd be of much better use here at the Dragon Club."
"Oh." This new information she'd gathered about the syndicate was quite refreshing to her ears. "Then thank you for your loyalty."
The man left, and her eyes immediately darted to the code on his door. Alpha - 8939. The tips of her fingers tingled, like it usually did when she discovered something important in her missions. She pulled her gaze away from it and started walking through the corridor, glancing at the door codes as she passed them.
Bravo - 8938.
Charlie - 8937.
Delta - 8936.
Echo - 8935.
Her heart started pounding loudly. There was a pattern to these codes. The letters and the numbers were descending. And if there were enough rooms here to complete the alphabet, then… Her feet carried her forward, past several more doors, until she was met with Lima - 8928. Her chest tightened in anticipation, and her steps slowed down to a stop on the door across it.
Mike - 8927.
Ying Yue's breathing hitched and she blinked back tears as she stared at the code on the door. Her brother left her the clue of M-8927. And here she was, at the Dragon Club headquarters where she never thought she would ever be. And she was standing outside a door with Mike - 8927 plastered on it. She suddenly felt light-headed.
She felt like the door was beckoning her, calling out to her silently. Her shaky hand reached out to the knob and she twisted it to open the door.
It was locked.
She didn't want her hopes to get squashed right away and she tried opening it again. But it was really locked. She knocked on the door three times, met only however, with silence. It didn't seem like there was anyone inside. "Hello? Anyone there?" She knocked again. Ying Yue's heart was beating faster with every movement.
Maybe this was it. Maybe Ying Shen hid his stash here.
Ying Yue knocked again -- louder, this time.
