Fei Huangjin couldn't sleep well that night. It wasn't because of the bamboo bed he was lying on, nor was it Guan Ting's loud snores. It was because he was worried about Ying Yue. It had already been a few days since he had last contacted her. And although he left an army of his finest men to tail her at all times and ensure her safety, he felt oddly uncomfortable, like his chest was tight, and he couldn't get her out of his mind.
He wanted to hear her voice.
Was this what they called, 'missing someone?'
With a sigh, Fei Huangjin turned over. It was only an hour or so until dawn broke and the two men got up to go with Ricardo.
"There. That hut," Ricardo whispered, pointing at the distance to an unfinished bamboo house with a mixture of galvanized iron and cogon leaves on its roof.
Fei Huangjin, who was walking beside him, narrowed his eyes. He eyed Guan Ting and said in a low voice, "Survey the place."
The man nodded and silently went up ahead. Fei Huangjin and Ricardo stayed behind, hidden behind shrubs of karanda [1]. It took Guan Ting some time to expertly maneuver around the hut, making sure that there were no traps lying around. Until finally, he broke in through the front door, awakening the man inside, and throwing an army knife a few millimeters away from his head.
The old man had sharp steely eyes, and he stayed where he was with one hand frozen mid-air during an attempt to take hold of a firearm lying beside him. "Young Guan Ting," he murmured. "I remember you when you were fresh off as a trainee."
Guan Ting didn't utter a word as he stepped closer.
"Did they send you here to kill me for refusing to go back? I've made my stand clear. I no longer want to be involved in matters of the syndicate. Let me die in peace." The man growled.
At that moment, Fei Huangjin stepped inside while Ricardo stood outside to stand guard. He heard the man's words and frowned. "No one's going to kill you. I just need explanations."
There was an obvious look of surprise in the elderly man as his eyes drifted to Fei Huangjin. "Young-- Young Master Fei," he sputtered out. "You…"
"Yes, I came all the way from China and crossed mountains to find you here. Don't you at least owe me some answers?"
The man retrieved his outstretched hand and sat up before lowering his head. No matter that he was retired, when it came to facing the Fei family in person, he could never not pay any respect. "I apologize, Young Master Fei, I don't have seats in my hut." The hut was, in fact, bare of any unnecessary things, save for a laptop tucked into one corner and some knives lying around.
"I can settle with sitting on the floor." The bamboo creaked as he squatted down. He wanted the man to know that he wasn't here to antagonize him. He wanted him to know that he wasn't a threat. And he did that by sitting down on the man's house, as if he was a servant not a master. "I need to know more about the man called Ying Shen."
The man turned away. "I've written everything I know into the e-mail I sent you."
"Not everything," Fei Huangjin's lips thinned. "I want to know who you gave those documents to."
The man replied with a sigh. He suddenly felt tired. His age was certainly catching up to him, and rehashing the past had a tendency to exhaust him. "Like I said, I gave them to Juyan. End of story. I'm sure they've put it to good use by now."
"The documents are not in Juyan." Huangjin's eyes narrowed into slits and his voice started to show hints of irritation. The man had turned to face him by now with a disconcerted frown. Fei Huangjin continued, "If you did give them to Juyan, who did you give them to?"
The man opened his mouth and closed it. His forehead wrinkled as he thought about how to answer.
"My wife, the madame of the Fei's, is the biological sister of the Ying Shen that my father trusted. She needs to know where it is. I need to know where it is. Now tell me," Fei Huangjin's eyes blazed. "Who did you give the documents to? Was it the man they called Big Boss? That man, Xu Feng, who runs the place?" He was getting more and more impatient as the seconds ticked by.
He shook his head. "No, it was a younger man. I don't remember his name, and neither do I remember exactly how he looked like, but I know he was one of those men that Xu Feng trusts. That was why I handed it over to him." His eyes twisted into one of confusion as he shifted his gaze between Guan Ting and Fei Huangjin. "Did the documents not make it to your wife?"
He got his answer by looking at Fei Huangjin's serious and somber face.
Fei Huangjin's eyebrows twitched as if he had thought of something. There was a certain brutality with the way he looked now and a threatening aura radiated from him.
