Fei Huangjin's phone rang.
At first, he ignored it. But it was ringing incessantly -- a sign that whoever was calling seemed to feel the need to talk to him that much. He glanced at the screen and did a double take when Ying Yue's name popped up.
"Wife," he answered with a grin. He expected her to grumble about something or ask him to pick her up, but instead, his greeting was only met with silence. Fei Huangjin's expression shifted to one of confusion, and then to worry. "Is something wrong?"
Again, there was only silence. But he could hear her breathing from the other end, so he knew she was there.
"Ying Yue?"
"Hubby…" Her voice broke.
"Did someone hurt you?" Fei Huangjin's face contorted to one of rage, and he abruptly stood up from his seat to stand by the floor-to-ceiling windows of his office. The morning light bathed his face with an angelic glow, but anyone who looked at him could see the demonic glint of his eyes as he thought about the possibility of his wife getting hurt. "Who was it?" He'd kill them.
"I'm not hurt--"
"You sound hurt."
"I'm not physically incapacitated or anything."
"Then did someone try to do anything?"
Ying Yue shook her head, but, realizing that he wouldn't be able to see it, she choked out an awkward-sounding "No." She sighed. "There are just problems with work."
"Tell me. Perhaps I can help." His face instantly softened. He'd do anything for her, really.
"No one can help if one of the Juyan missions carried out had failed. Juyan is supposed to be the best in this."
So that was what this was, he thought. "I'm Fei Huangjin. I'm the most powerful person in the city. I'm sure I can help."
He sounded so arrogant that Ying Yue almost had the urge to laugh at his words. But she couldn't. She failed at her job as the director and strategist of Juyan. If Big Boss was alive, he'd probably have smacked the upside of her head for disappointing him so badly. She sprawled her arms out on top of her desk and laid her head on it. "Just because you're powerful doesn't mean you're omnipotent and invincible. It's not possible for you to be able to solve everything."
"I'm more capable than you think."
"You can't fix this one, Huangjin." She started to get annoyed.
"If there's a will, there's a way." He pointed out.
"There are things--"
"I never pegged you for a quitter." He scoffed. This irked Ying Yue, making her blow out a breath of frustration over the phone. This made Fei Huangjin sit back down on his seat with a small smile. If she decided to talk about it, he was sure it was going to take a while. "Why don't you just tell me what happened so I can help you figure out the next course of action to take?"
Ying Yue finally conceded, and the tale of failure poured out of her lips and into her husband's ears. She ranted about everything -- even down to the disappointed looks of the Juyan staff when the operation ended without them gaining anything.
Fei Huangjin paused to think about it, putting a finger under his chin. "Then what do you want to do?"
"I want to investigate the facility on my own."
His face hardened. "No. You're my wife--"
"And your wife is a spy! A top-level spy, in fact. And this mission calls for proper investigation. My first mistake was assigning a newbie to this project when it was actually more dangerous than I thought it was." She cringed. The spy she had sent had just debuted for less than a year. And the back-up spy was senior to him by just a couple of months. And as the strategist, she had endangered their lives. Juyan wasn't even sure if they were still alive.
Fei Huangjin pursed his lips in displeasure. "Do you realize that if anything happens to you, Juyan would be left to fend for itself?"
"Of course, I know that."
"And you still want to go?" He frowned.
